What Can I Expect After The Procedure

Recovery from breast reconstruction in NYC varies greatly, depending on the intricacies of your individual procedure. Recovery from implant-based reconstruction is typically shorter than from flap reconstruction. While you may return to normal, daily activities within weeks, it takes months to completely heal.

Dr. Antell will discuss a timeline based on your specific case at your consultation and answer any questions you may have about the recovery process. An experienced surgeon like Dr. Antell will work to minimize scarring however, it is important to realize that some scarring is inevitable. The incision sites will likely initially appear pink and firm, but the visibility of the scars will fade with time.

Your Manhattan breast reconstruction surgery is a fully customized procedure, meaning different techniques will be used based on your individual characteristics and your desired outcome. There are two types of reconstruction: flap and implant-based.

Flap reconstruction uses tissue from other areas of the body to reconstruct the breast and results in the most natural-feeling breast. TRAM flap reconstruction tunnels tissue from the abdomen upward into the breast area, allowing the blood vessels to remain attached to their original blood supply. The free TRAM flap and DIEP flap are newer reconstructive techniques that sacrifice less abdominal muscle but require relocation of the tissues blood supply. Other options include the TUG and DUG flaps, which use tissue from the thigh, and the gluteus flap, which uses tissue from the buttock.

Implant-based reconstruction uses a silicone or saline implant to rebuild the breast. Typically, a tissue expander is first placed under the pectoral muscle. A saline solution is gradually added to this balloon-like device, slowly expanding the skin until it is stretched enough to cover an implant, which usually takes six to eight weeks. The expander is removed in a second surgery, in which the true implant is also placed. If enough skin remains to cover the breast without tissue expansion, Dr. Antell can directly proceed to placing the true implant.

You dont think twice about getting multiple bids for a construction or plumbing project, so why hesitate on multiple bids for your health?

I learned the value of a second opinion a year and a half ago when two breast cancer surgeons presented me with very different treatment options.

My ordeal began with an acute pain in my breast that I self-diagnosed as mastitis, an infection that usually affects breast-feeding mothers. But I hadnt breast-fed in 18 months. After a visit to the emergency room and two rounds of antibiotics to reduce the pain and swelling, a lump remained.

I had noninvasive ductal carcinoma in situ, it turned out, and lots of it. Some consider this Stage 0 cancer, while others say it should not even be called cancer at all.

The diagnosis came just six weeks after my husband, two toddlers and I had relocated from New York to Los Angeles for my husbands new career.

Whoa. It was a lot. But I loved her and I was starting to feel better. She ran additional biopsies to see if she could glean more information from the tangle of disease in my right breast. The results confirmed the original diagnosis: Stage 0, D.C.I.S.

Why Choose Lumpectomy Or Mastectomy

With early-stage breast cancer, you may be offered a choice between a mastectomy or a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy. In some women whose cancer cells are scattered throughout the breast or who cant receive radiation, a mastectomy is medically necessary even though the cancer is early and favorable. While many women opt for lumpectomy, some prefer mastectomy. Discuss the pros and cons of both options with your doctor. Its helpful to bring a list of the questions and concerns that youd like to discuss during your appointment to make sure that you get all of the information you need to make the decision that feels best for you.

If you need help thinking of questions to ask your surgeon, here are a few to get you started.

Top Breast Cancer Oncologists Picked By Big Data

What’s below is the result of a challenge: can a company that helps patients find the right doctor identify the best physicians over all, or at least come close?

Last year, I wrote a magazine profile of a company called Grand Rounds, which aims to meticulously comb through data on physicians everything from what they prescribe to the wait times in their parking lotsto match patients with the right doctor for them. The companys founder, Owen Tripp, even used the service himself when a type of tumor was found in his ear. It’s not that there aren’t good doctors, and it’s certainly not that there aren’t enough of them, Tripp said last week at the Forbes Healthcare Summit. The problem is measurement.

There are limitations to this analysis. Grand Rounds says it misses excellent doctors who belong on it. Efforts to find outside experts who could vet Grand Rounds algorithms were unsuccessful. Like many efforts in machine learning or artificial intelligence, the results emerge from a black box thats hard for outsiders to evaluate. And Grand Rounds is a private company, with the skepticism it entails. But this list, and the other, are at the least thought-provoking. And I can confirm, based on years of reporting, that many of the physicians included are indeed the best in their fields.

Should I Have Chemotherapy Before Breast Cancer Surgery

Although breast cancer treatment usually starts with surgery, there are some situations in which your doctor may recommend chemotherapy first. For example, if you have a large tumor and small breasts, chemotherapy may shrink the tumor enough to make a lumpectomy possible. Having chemotherapy as the first treatment for breast cancer may destroy cancer in the lymph nodes, which may help some women avoid having their lymph nodes removed. For women with some types of advanced breast cancer such as inflammatory cancer, having chemotherapy as the first step in treatment is standard to be sure all the cancer cells can be removed surgically. In studies involving thousands of women, this has been shown to be just as safe as having surgery first.

What Is Breast Reconstruction Surgery

You may choose to have breast reconstruction surgery after a mastectomy to rebuild the breast so that it looks similar to the way it did before the surgery. Many times this can be done at the same time as your breast cancer surgery. But it is also possible afterward, even years later. There are many options for reconstruction. After lumpectomy, doctors can enhance the appearance of the breast using fat injections to plump up any dimpled areas where tissue has been removed. They can also perform a breast lift or breast reduction or do plastic surgery on the other breast to create a closely matched pair. After mastectomy, methods of rebuilding the breast include breast implant surgery and using tissue from another part of your body to create a new breast.

What Is Recovery Like After Breast Cancer Surgery

Recovery time depends on which surgery you have:

  • After a lumpectomy without a sentinel node biopsy, youre likely to feel well enough to return to work after two or three days. You can usually resume normal physical activities, like going to the gym, after one week.
  • After a lumpectomy with a sentinel node biopsy, you may need to take up to a week off from work to recover.
  • After a mastectomy without breast reconstruction, recovery takes three to four weeks. Most women experience pain for a few days after surgery, some for longer periods. Feelings of fatigue can last several weeks as your body heals.
  • After mastectomy with breast reconstruction, recovery time can range from four weeks after implant surgery to six to eight weeks for women who have tissue flap reconstruction.
