Why Do Mushrooms Fight Cancer
Mushrooms are thought to protect against breast and other hormone-related cancers particularly because they inhibit an enzyme called aromatase, which produces estrogen.
Mushrooms are one of the very few foods that inhibit aromatase . And several varieties of mushrooms, including the commonly eaten white button and portobello mushrooms, have strong anti-aromatase activity.
But consumption of mushrooms protects against more than hormone-dependent cancers. Mushrooms also contain specialized lectins that recognize cancer cells and have been found to prevent cancer cells from growing and dividing.

Next time you make a salad, you might want to consider adding mushrooms to it. That’s because higher mushroom consumption is associated with a lower risk of cancer, according to a new Penn State study, published on March 16 in Advances in Nutrition.
The systematic review and meta-analysis examined 17 cancer studies published from 1966 to 2020. Analyzing data from more than 19,500 cancer patients, researchers explored the relationship between mushroom consumption and cancer risk.
Mushrooms are rich in vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. The team’s findings show that these super foods may also help guard against cancer. Even though shiitake, oyster, maitake and king oyster mushrooms have higher amounts of the amino acid ergothioneine than white button, cremini and portabello mushrooms, the researchers found that people who incorporated any variety of mushrooms into their daily diets had a lower risk of cancer. According to the findings, individuals who ate 18 grams of mushrooms daily had a 45% lower risk of cancer compared to those who did not eat mushrooms.

This 2010 study by PubMed evaluated the relationship between mushroom intake and the risk of breast cancer according to hormone receptor status among Korean women. Mushroom intake and breast cancer risk were examined among 358 breast cancer patients and 360 cancer-free controls. The conclusion: Our results suggest that high consumption of mushrooms might be related to lower risks for breast cancers among premenopausal women this association may be more robust among women with hormone receptor-positive tumors.
Mushrooms have been shown to reduce blood pressure as well as sugar levels, have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, cholesterol-reducing, and immune-enhancing properties. According to the Food for Breast Cancer website, generally speaking, mushrooms are a good source of dietary niacin and riboflavin .
Mushrooms contain numerous compounds with anti-cancer activities, including butein, marmorin, various -glucans and lectins, and ganodermanontriol. White button mushrooms one of the most common mushrooms in the United States are also a good source of conjugated linoleic acid . Portobello mushrooms that have been exposed to UV light are a good source of vitamin D.
The information in the remainder of this section concerns mushrooms commonly available in the U.S. Generally speaking, we would be cautious about consuming mushroom supplements because safe and effective dosages have not been established.

Can Mushrooms Green Tea Prevent Breast Cancer
I heard that drinking green tea and eating mushrooms lowered the breast cancer risk of women in China. True?
Andrew Weil, M.D. |October 5, 2009
Youre referring to a study in China conducted by Australian researchers showing that women who ate the most fresh button mushrooms, 10 grams or more per day, were about two-thirds less likely to develop breast cancer than women who ate no mushrooms. Those who ate four grams or more of dried mushrooms, mostly shiitake, daily had half the cancer risk of women who ate no mushrooms. Those who ate mushrooms and also drank green tea daily had only 11 to 18 percent the breast cancer risk of women who consumed neither. The findings were published in the March 15, 2009 issue of the International Journal of Cancer.
Noting that the white button mushroom was the most commonly consumed fresh mushroom by the women in the study, Dr. Abrams points out that Agaricus species have been reported to contain natural aromatase inhibitors, substances that can block production of estrogen in the body. Today, pharmaceutical aromatase inhibitors are the first line in breast cancer treatment in women whose tumors are estrogen receptor positive .
In summing up, he agreed with my view of mushrooms: Bottom line, mushrooms are good medicine. Cook them well before eating them and enjoy a variety rather than any one specific type.

Does Turkey Tail Cure Cancer
Turkey tail mushrooms, also known as Trametes versicolor and Coriolus versicolor, are known for their antitumor activities. According to a 2010 study, an active compound isolated from turkey tail appears to induce apoptosis of liver cancer cells and inhibit cell growth of mutated cells.Turkey tail can also be quite beneficial to take during chemotherapy to promote overall immune function. Immunomodulators, commonly used for cancer treatment, come with quite a few side effects, including abdominal pain, weakness, diarrhea, and body aches.According to a 2019 study published in the Journal of Integrative Medicine and Complementary and Alternative Therapies, using turkey tail as a complementary therapy with immunomodulators could lessen side effects of the drug, especially nausea, neuropathies, and organ damage.

Reduction Of Side Effects By Conventional Therapy
Valadares et al. focused on the effects of Agaricus sylvaticus extract on side effects of chemotherapy in breast cancer patients in a RCT . Patients with three cycles of chemotherapy at the beginning of treatment reported poor appetite, with 23% of these patients in the placebo group and 54% of these patients in the Agaricus sylvaticus group. After 3 months of treatment with Agaricus sylvaticus, 31% of patients in the placebo group reported a reduction in appetite, while no such symptoms occurred in the supplemented group. Compared to patients with six cycles of chemotherapy and use of Agaricus sylvaticus, the data showed that, toward the end of the treatment, loss of appetite decreased over time. In comparison, 80% of patients in the placebo group complained about loss of appetite by the end of the study after 6 months. While the majority of the placebo-receiving patients suffered from gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, constipation, nausea and vomiting, only two patients in the verum group reported these side effects. Patients taking medicinal mushrooms had nearly no loss of appetite and only in a few cases fever was an occurrence while this was also frequent in the placebo group.
In advanced lung cancer, several cancer-related symptoms such as fever, cough, weakness, sweating and insomnia improved significantly in 4384% of patients receiving Ganoderma lucidum compared to placebo .

Re: Mushrooms And Breast Cancer
Recently, I came across some interesting information on the Internet that mushrooms can have a practical effect on cancer. At this point, I remembered about my friend who has cancer, so I decided to delve into this article and read it unlikely to find something useful that will help her to suspend or overcome this disease. This article says that there are many types of mushrooms that contain chemical compounds that can beat cancer. After that, I decided to learn more about the properties of mushrooms and their help against cancer. There are many mushrooms, such as the enoki mushroom – it blocks the growth of the tumor blood system, has the property of raising the immune system, and many others. The lion’s mane mushroom is known as a cognitive enhancer, also blocks the growth of tumors, and has even been used by ancient and modern herbalists to support mental alertness, memory, and mood. There are many mushrooms, so it is worth having a look and choosing one for yourself. I told my friend I thought that she would not ignore my recommendations.

In these countries, mushrooms have been used safely for a long time, either alone or combined with radiation or chemotherapy.
In Asia, there are more than 100 types of mushrooms used to treat cancer. Some of the more common ones are Ganoderma lucidum , Trametes versicolor or Coriolus versicolor , Lentinus edodes , and Grifola frondosa .
Mushrooms are being studied to find out how they affect the immune system and if they stop or slow the growth of tumors or kill tumor cells. It is thought that certain chemicalcompounds, such as polysaccharides in turkey tail mushrooms, strengthen the immune system to fight cancer.
