Radiation Therapy Via The Cyberknife System
Radiosurgery and radiotherapy are delivered via the CyberKnife® system, at Ochsner Lafayette Generals CyberKnife Center Louisiana
The CyberKnife system is exceptionally accurate because of two key advancements:
Radiation therapy, also called radiotherapy or irradiation, is the use of a certain type of energy to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation therapy selectively injures or destroys tumor cells in the area being treated by damaging their genetic material and making it impossible for these cells to continue to grow and divide. Although radiation damages both cancer cells and normal cells, most normal cells can recover from the effects of radiation and function properly.
There are different types of radiation and different ways to deliver the radiation.
Is There A Radiation Exposure Risk From A Yearly Screening Mammogram
Please feel free to discuss this issue with a Breast Center of Acadiana mammography technologist . However, rest assured that special care is taken to use the least amount of radiation possible. Todays technology uses much less radiation than earlier generation mammogram machines.
You should not have a mammogram if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant.

When Should I Begin Having Yearly Screening Mammograms
If you are not experiencing breast symptoms and/or problems, the guidelines of the American College of Radiology provide that you should begin having screening mammograms at 40 years of age, or earlier, if you are at high risk such as having a family history of breast cancer.
The Society of Breast Imaging developed this website to help end the confusion around when and how often women should get mammography screening. Its an excellent resource for women to get clear and accurate information on mammography screening.
Tips For Preparing For And Getting A Mammogram
Consider your cycle
- Avoid scheduling your mammogram the week before or during your period. Sensitivity during this time might make the experience more uncomfortable.
Dress accordingly
- Avoid wearing any perfume, fragrant powder or deodorant as these can show up on a mammogram as white spots.
- Consider wearing separates when picking an outfit. You will need to undress from the waist up for the mammogram.
Alert us of past mammograms
- If this is your first mammogram at Ochsner Lafayette General, bring a list of prior mammograms, biopsies or breast imaging from other facilities. This allows the radiologist to compare them to look for changes.

What Is The Difference Between A Yearly Screening Mammogram And A Diagnostic Mammogram
A yearly screening mammogram is a preventative procedure which is performed annually, depending on age, in cases where a patient has not exhibited breast-related symptoms or problems. A diagnostic mammogram is used when a patient is experiencing breast-related symptoms or problems or when screening indicates the need for a more detailed evaluation of the breast.
What Should I Do If I Find A Breast Lump Or Experience Any Other Breast Symptoms Or Problems Such As Bloody Nipple Discharge Breast Changes Sudden Dimpling Or Sudden Nipple Retraction
You should promptly contact your primary or other treating physician to evaluate the symptom or problem. Your physician will determine what, if any, breast imaging services should be provided and issue an appropriate written order. Do I Need To Bring The Physicians Order For The Mammogram With Me To My Mammogram Appointment
Yes. While your treating physician may fax us an order we strongly recommend that you bring the providers order with you on the day of your appointment. If you do not obtain and/or bring a written order on the day of the appointment it may cause your test to be postponed and interfere with the Breast Center of Acadianas busy daily schedule.

How Should I Prepare For A Yearly Screening Mammogram
On the day of the screening mammogram do not use deodorant, powder or lotions. These substances can mimic the appearance of cancer and require the study to be repeated. You should wear a 2-piece outfit so youll only need to remove your top. Our technician will give you a robe to wear. If you have tender breasts, it may be helpful to schedule one week after your menstrual period.

One of the advantages of digital health is that it gives an avenue for a multidisciplinary approach to care, for interprofessional collaboration. In the third case examined, a 75-year-old man had an abdominal mass, which was causing obstruction to the kidney, and yet it was not a urological case. This is where multidisciplinary approach through digital health became very important. It was easy to coordinate care using digital applications between various specialties, radiology, pathology, oncology, general surgery, nursing and urology, all worked together to ensure that this gentleman had good care.

Patients know that these devices are out there on the web, but they are not sure which ones are safe. They want to know, what are these devices going to do for me? Are they going to be helpful? What Are The Normal Changes In A Womans Breasts And Which Changes Suggest That A Breast Examination By A Physician Should Be Performed
You may have normal monthly cyclic changes that affect your breasts. However, if the symptoms persist for more than a couple of monthly cycles, it is recommended that an office visit with a physician be scheduled to conduct a breast examination. Upon the completion of the breast examination, the physician may issue written order for further testing. At What Age Do I No Longer Need A Yearly Screening Mammogram
Yearly screening mammograms may continue as long as you are healthy. This recommendation is supported by the guidelines of the American Cancer Society, the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the American College of Radiology. With respect to older women, the American Cancer Society recommends that after age 55 a woman should be given the choice of a screening mammogram every year or every 2 years.
