Breast cancer patient speaks out after misread mammograms: ‘I was lied to’

Since my mid-20s I have been very body aware my lifestyle is relatively healthy. I have never smoked, I dont drink, I exercise regularly, I check my breasts and I generally look after my body.

In mid-December 2016 I lifted my gym bag out of my car it hit me on the left-hand side of my chest, and it felt like a very sharp edge. I didnt think much of it the first week. I thought it was just a large bruise under the skin and therefore it would go away in time. When it hadnt gone away after three weeks, I made an appointment with my GP who did an examination. They referred me to the breast clinic for further checks, just to be on the safe side. I wasnt feeling nervous, the GP was calm, and it is not in my nature to worry about things until I know what Im dealing with.

I went for a biopsy four weeks after my initial appointment, and two weeks after that I went for an appointment to get my results. As it was during the day and because I dont have family in the UK, I went on my own.

Symptoms Of Breast Cancer That Arent A Lump

Lumps get most of the attention when you think about the symptoms of breast cancer. Youve probably heard that you should check your breasts regularly and be on the lookout for new or unusual bumps you can’t remember being there before. If you do find one, don’t panicsome women’s breasts happen to be lumpy without it being a sign of cancer. But if it’s a new lump, feels different from other lumps, or you just want some reassurance, its a good idea to get it looked at by a doctor.

But there are other breast cancer signs you should know, too. Its not uncommon for breast cancer to present itself as something other than a lump, Jack Jacoub, M.D., a medical oncologist and medical director of MemorialCare Cancer Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, Calif., tells SELF, estimating that anywhere from 10 to 20 percent of breast cancers he’s seen don’t involve one. While the most common symptom of breast cancer is still a new bump or mass, according to the American Cancer Society, here are a few others that should be on your radar, too.

If you find something off with your boobs, the odds are pretty high that its something thats completely unrelated to cancer. Its important to put everything into context, Dr. Jacoub says. Still, its a good idea to get new and unusual breast symptoms checked out, just in case.

Breast Seed Localization Offers A More Patient

After completing chemotherapy, Sheila was scheduled for her lumpectomy with Dr. Cappuccino. Prior to the surgery, in a process called breast seed localization, a tiny titanium seed with a small amount of sealed radiation was inserted into Sheilas breast to mark the exact location of her small tumor. Roswell Park is one of the only area facilities to use this more patient-friendly procedure that eliminates the use of an uncomfortable tracking wire that protrudes from the patients breast.

During the surgery, Dr. Cappuccino used a radiation detection device to locate and remove the seed and the tumor. During the same operation and same incision 20 lymph nodes were removed and analyzed, and only one showed evidence of cancer.

Sheila still has part of her treatment journey ahead of her, including completing radiation therapy with radiation oncologist Simon Fung-Kee-Fung, MD, but is already thinking forward to the healing. She will soon begin hormone-suppressing medication and will receive care and training from specialists in the Lymphedema Clinic to manage lymphedema in her arm, a condition in which lymphatic fluid builds up as a result of lymph node removal.

What Exactly Does A Breast Lump Feel Like

A lump often feels like a round, hard area, said Dr. Arif Kamal, a chief patient officer at the American Cancer Society. It can either be deep or toward the skin itself. Typically it is not painful. Its typically not easily movable but oftentimes fixed in a particular space, meaning it doesnt shift in its location all that easily. In terms of shape, it is oftentimes round but sometimes it can be a little bit more irregular than that.

Some experts have suggested the size of a breast lump ranges from as small as a pea to larger than a golf ball. Indeed, Kamal noted that many of his patients have compared it to a pea.

In my clinical experience, a lot of times patients describe it like a pea in a pod or a frozen pea sort of on the smaller side, of that texture, and of that hardness, he said. Its generally on the smoother side for texture, generally more firm, generally not painful. And it generally does not feel like a cyst, which feels like a fluid collection although even if a person feels a fluid collection, they should report that to their clinical team as well.

Of course, feeling a new lump isnt the only indication of a potential issue. Susan Brown, senior director of health information at Susan G. Komen, shared a list of eight warning signs, including visual indicators, that people should look out for.
