This funding supports local breast cancer research projects across Alabama. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama today announced a total investment of $1,225,000 in Alabama-based breast cancer research for 2021. Grants fund 20 research projects across the state, including the ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham , Auburn University, CerFlux, the Mitchell Cancer Institute at the University of South Alabama, the University of Alabama, Southern Research, and HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. This years grant awards increase the BCRFAs lifetime investment total to over $12 million since 1996.
As the largest Alabama-based funder of breast cancer research across the state, the BCRFA has seen the undeniable power of research in accelerating the progress of treatments and outcomes for patients facing the disease, said Beth Bradner Davis, BCRFA Executive Director. We are proud that this historic investmentour largest everwill continue to fuel breakthroughs and advance our mission to save lives.
BCRFA dollars often function as seed funding for developing studies, allowing researchers to generate data needed to attract major national funding. Many BCRFA-funded projects have later received national grants from the National Institute of Health and others.

This funding we provide to our partners allows researchers to successfully compete and receive sought-after and sustaining grant dollars, recruit and retain world-class breast cancer researchers, and seize every opportunity for groundbreaking discovery.
The ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB is one ofthe leading national academic medical centers that make up the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium, which is 100% philanthropy-funded. The effective stewardship of our donations to this organization & their partners creates a multiplier effect, using the BCRFA donations as seed money to attract grant funding turning every one dollar donated into 16 dollars!

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama is proud to play a role in preventing breast cancer deaths through education and awareness this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, said Beth Davis, BCRFA President & CEO. Im so inspired to see our partners unite behind our mission and hopeful for a future without breast cancer thanks to research.
Proceeds from the events and promotions advance the most promising and innovative breast cancer research happening in Alabama. Last year the BCRFA invested over $1.225 million in 20 projects at seven Alabama-based institutes. The organization will announce its 2022 grant awards in December.
“The funding for research is essential, but Breast Cancer Awareness Month is also an important time to celebrate the successes of breast cancer survivors and memorialize lost battles while encouraging others to join the fight against a disease that touches so many, Davis said.
One in eight women and one in 1,000 men will develop breast cancer. This year alone, an estimated 4,280 Alabama women will be diagnosed and 730 will die. However, thanks in large part to investments in research and early detection, death rates from breast cancer in women are dropping. Thirty years ago, four out of five breast cancer patients lost their lives to the illness. Today, those numbers are reversed with four out of five breast cancer patients conquering cancer.

Breast Cancer Research Foundation Of Alabama Invests $105 Million In Alabama
The Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama today announced an investment of $1.05 million in Alabama-based breast cancer research at the ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB and their collaborative partners, bringing the organizations total impact over 25 years to nearly $11 million.
Matching their 2019 investment, the organization will support 14 research projects throughout the state, including studies at the ONeal Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham , Auburn University, Cerflux, Mitchell Cancer Institute at University of South Alabama, Tuskegee University and Southern Research. Funding was raised in 2020 by corporate sponsorships, special events, individual donations, grants from local, state and federal funders, and sales of the Breast Cancer Research specialty license plate.
Despite COVID-19, individuals and companies throughout the state stepped up for breast cancer research, said Beth Bradner Davis, executive director of the BCRFA. Our staff and board are truly thrilled to match last years investment, allowing us to support critical projects which will change therapies and treatments for breast cancer patients here in Alabama and around the world. Unfortunately, diagnoses dont stop during a pandemic. This investment will ensure that research wont either.

Breast Cancer Research Foundation Of Alabama Raises Nearly $300000 In Spring Events
Whether at a grill or at a poker table or with a bow or golf club more than 1,700 people lent their efforts this spring to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama to help fight breast cancer.
The CahabaQue BBQ Cook-Off on April 9, followed by Pink Palace Casino Night on April 23, the Drive Out Breast Cancer golf tournament May 16 and the Bow-Up Against Breast Cancer 3D archery tournament May 21-22 netted about $300,000 for lifesaving breast cancer research across the state.
Since our founding in 1996, the BCRFA has invested over $12 million to Alabama breast cancer research, thanks in large part to the generous community supporters and partners who make our events possible, said Beth Bradner Davis, BCRFA executive director. She said that money raised through the events fuel the organizations mission to eradicate breast cancer by funding research and growing awareness.
BCRFA funding is unique because our grants accelerate the most promising, early-stage research happening right here in Alabama, Davis added. With our seed funding, researchers can gather the data needed to apply for larger national grants from funders like the National Institutes of Health or the National Cancer Institute. On average, funds invested by the BCRFA are leveraged 14 to 1, she said.

Hudsonalpha Faculty Investigator Named To Medical Advisory Board Of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation Of Alabama

Huntsville, AL HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Faculty Investigator Sara Cooper, PhD is one of the newest members named to the Medical Advisory Council of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama .
The addition of Dr. Cooper reflects the BCRFAs intentional expansion of the council to enhance our efforts to fund the most promising breast cancer research across the state, said Wright Wiggins Rouse, Marketing and Communications Director of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama.
Cooper, along with the nine other council members, will have the responsibility of reviewing funding requests, making sure the science is sound, and BCFRA investments have the maximum impact.
I am honored that BCRFA asked me to participate in their Medical Advisory Council, Dr. Cooper said. I am excited to help bring more opportunities for breast cancer research across Alabama.
Coopers research focus is on understanding the mechanisms of cancer pathology, progression and chemoresistance, in an effort to help personalize cancer diagnosis and treatment. Her lab at HudsonAlpha focuses on the identification of biomarkers of and novel targets to prevent cancer chemoresistance, the importance of immune response in cancer and the discovery of new genes that predispose individuals to cancer. Opportunity to support researchers working to improve diagnosis and care for breast cancer patients, Cooper added.

An estimated 4,280 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Alabama this year. .The good news is that deaths from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options.
