What Will Happen After Treatment
Youll be glad when treatment is over. For years after treatment ends, you will still see your cancer doctor. Be sure to go to all of these follow-up visits. You will have exams, blood tests, and maybe other tests to see if the cancer has come back.
The first few years, your visits may be every few months. The more time that passes from when you finished treatment, the less often the visits are needed.
If you still have a breast, youll need to get a mammogram every year. Depending on your treatment, you might need other tests as well, such as regular bone density tests or heart tests.

Exercise And Maintaining Bone Mineral Density
Various forms of breast cancer treatment can be detrimental to bone health, which would increase ones risk of osteoporosis and subsequent bone fractures. Adjuvant forms of therapy such as aromatase inhibitors are known to accelerate bone loss as a result of the estrogen deprivation effects of the treatment.66 Benefits of exercise are documented for bone mineral density maintenance in BCS67,68 and further warrants investigations, since treatment side effects such as chemotherapy-induced amenorrhea and chemotherapy itself may pose even greater losses of BMD in premenopausal BCS.6971 These adverse effects have evoked the use of AE and RE as a prevention mechanism for deterring bone loss.
Although RE is traditionally utilized to prevent the loss of or maintenance of BMD, AE may also contribute to the maintenance of bone health . For example, a 12-month supervised and home-based aerobic and circuit training program emphasizing in vigorous step aerobics and circuit training , maintained BMD at the femoral neck when compared to a sedentary control group in BCS.19 Additional studies noted prevention of bone loss at the femoral neck and total body following participation in 612 months of moderate-to-vigorous AE.16,19 Overall, it may be plausible to prevent bone loss in BCS with a minimum of 6 months of participation in AE.
Showing Us What We Dont Know
Once we flagged and filtered out any irrelevant markings or coloring, we were able to set up unsupervised machine learning. We told the machine to identify patterns in the tiles and create 10 clusters. Clustering is when the machine groups similar patterns, like your phone automatically searching through your photos and creating a photo album of your daughter.We fed the computer no information about what it was going to find, says Gaudet. We wanted to let it tell us where to go.The machine created some clusters that the team understood, like identifying the grade of cancer, which validated that the machines were on track. But there are also new patterns that were not yet unable to understand why they were clustered, which was the goal, says Gaudet. For example, clusters two and threewell, to my eye they look exactly the same but thats the whole premise of the project, for the machine to identify differences that the human eye cant.And the time saved is invaluable. It could have taken a pathologist three years to do what Slalom helped us do in three months, says Gaudet.ACS is now analyzing these clusters to discover what the patterns are. Why did the machine group these together? What do they have in common? Are there lifestyle, diet, reproductive factors that are connected to that pattern?Were looking at the clusters that the Slalom team provided us and relating them back to breast cancer survival, says Gaudet.

What Can A Machine See That A Person Cant
Most pathologistsdoctors who specialize in identifying abnormalities in tissueswork in clinical care, so theyre in high demand in the research world. At ACS, theres only one pathologist on the breast cancer research team, part-time. He spends the rest of his time with other duties at ACS.Imagine how long it takes someone to look at those 1,700 images one by one, says Michelle Yi, Slalom solution principal. We wanted to be able to scale that work with machine learning.There are also certain patterns in the tissue that the human eye cant see, even under a microscope. And pathology, in many ways, is an art, says Gaudet. Certainly, pathologists are able to tell the difference between cancer and not cancer, but theres a lot of variability in how they evaluate some of the nuances of cancer. Machine learning can minimize any variability in analysis.We knew we wanted to create a reusable, scalable machine learning model on the cloud. So we reached out to our Google partners to see if theyd be interested in working with us. They agreed enthusiastically, and helped fund the project.

According to the American Cancer Society, The Making Strides Movement remains instrumental in funding for the treatment and support of breast cancer patients, survivors, thrivers and caregivers. Touted as one of the nations largest breast cancer movements, more than 150 communities across the country will join the Jacksonville event making strides to end breast cancer as we know it.
Actress and Jacksonville native, Renee Lawless, best known for her role in hit television series, The Haves and Have Nots will be among those walking only this year, she walks as a survivor. As a member of this select sorority, Lawless says that she stands strong with those battling – and surviving – breast cancer, celebrating the journey as we celebrate the fight.
Refusing to give the C word its due, Lawless, now cancer free, never says shes had Cancer.
I was diagnosed with Cancer, she said. And now I am renewed in spirit, in life and in view.

The Future Of Cancer Research
The Slalom team partnered closely with ACS every step of the way to transfer our machine learning knowledge and train Gaudets team. I had no training in machine learning, she says. And I would say I am not the best with technology overall. But the Slalom team has been awesome about training us and getting us up to speed.ACS now has powerful machine learning tools that it can reuse on similar projects. In fact, it plans to use machine learning to analyze other types of cancers.This is an extremely hot area in cancer research right now, says Gaudet. And Slalom drove us to be able to play in this space where we previously were not. Since weve started this collaboration with Slalom, weve built other collaborations with academic partners, all due to Slalom getting us on the right track.We hope that these machine learning tools will help ACS make a dent in cancer, a disease that took a Slalom colleague and friendand so many family members and friendsmuch too soon. My mother and grandmother both passed away from breast cancer, says Yi. Being able to pitch in even a little bit means a lot to me.

New Diagnoses Of Breast Cancer Continue Slow Increase In 2022
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the US, after nonmelanoma skin cancer. It mostly affects women age 50 and older, who develop about 83% of new breast cancer cases and represent 91% of deaths from breast cancer. Half of the women who die from breast cancer in the US are age 70 or older.
Men can get breast cancer, too, but this is much less common. In 2022, an estimated 287,850 women and 2,710 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. An estimated 43,250 women and 530 men will die from the disease.
Breast cancer incidence rates have risen slowly in most of the past 40 years. During the most decade of data, 2010 through 2019, the rate increased by 0.5% a year. The increase is likely due at least in part to more women having excess body weight and the declining fertility rate of women in the US.

Medical imaging is an especially significant proportion of clinical services.
Health care represented 17.3% of the U.S. gross domestic product in 2009. It was 8.8% in 1980 and 11.9% in 1990. At current rates of increase, health care will be 25% of the U.S. GDP by 2025 . Health care costs are growing faster than the nation’s overall economy and faster than personal income.
Up To About 30% Of Breast Cancers May Be Preventable With Changes In Lifestyle
About 30% of breast cancer diagnoses are linked to risk factors that women may be able to changesuch as excess body weight, physical inactivity, and alcohol intake.
Women can help lower their risk for developing breast cancer by being active, maintaining a healthy body weight, and limiting alcohol. They can also help lower their risk of death from breast cancer by talking with their doctor about how often to get a mammogram, sticking with that schedule, and promptly following up on any abnormal results. Following American Cancer Society guidelines for breast cancer screening can help women find breast cancer earlier, when treatments are more likely to be effective.
The advocate affiliate of the ACS, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network continues to make efforts to close this persistent gap in screening.
Lawmakers can and must do more to address the unequal burden of breast cancer among Black women, including increasing funding for the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program , a program jointly funded by federal and state governments that helps improve access to lifesaving screenings for these cancers.

Exercise And Management Of Lymphedema
Lymphedema secondary to breast cancer is a chronic debilitating condition and treatment-related sequelae, which is a substantial concern during survivorship. Lymphedema is caused by the disruption of the lymphatic system, leading to the accumulation of fluid in the interstitial space and clinically presented as swelling of the arm, shoulder, neck, or torso.47,48 Chronic swelling leads to soft tissue fibrosis and deposition of adipose tissue. Further, this increases the patients risk of cellulitis causing additional damage to the lymphatic capillaries.49 Lymphedema is reported to develop in ~20% of women following breast cancer treatments.50 However, the incidence rates vary based on the clinical definition. Importantly, lymphedema can develop years after the initial cancer treatment,5153 and irrespective of onset, lymphedema often causes emotional distress and compromised QOL.54,55 The recommended management of lymphedema by the National Lymphedema Network and the International Society of Lymphology is complete decongestive therapy, involving manual lymphatic drainage compression bandages, remedial active exercises, skin care, and patient education.56,57
