Making Strides For Breast Cancer Walks

Retired teacher and breast cancer survivor Sherylyn Bailey, the UFTs Staten Island strides coordinator, gets comfortable before the start of the walk in her borough.

Lashawn Holmes, a teacher at PS 36 in Brooklyn, knows how to fight breast cancer.

Its a different feeling being here in person, Antonella Lombardo said at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Oct. 10 in Brooklyn. It feels wonderful.

Lombardo, a teacher and the chapter leader at PS 177 in Brooklyn, walked with colleagues in Coney Island to honor a payroll secretary who is undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Weve been supporting her for a long time, Lombardo said, as UFT members and their teams mingled around the unions tent in pink T-shirts and masks.

Mashantuck Bell, the UFTs Brooklyn walk coordinator and a chapter leader and paraprofessional at IS 364 in that borough, was selling pink UFT tote bags, masks and notepads with her daughter, Lashawn Holmes, a teacher at Brooklyns PS 36, before walking in the American Cancer Societys annual event, a fundraiser for breast cancer research, advocacy and patient services.

Its important to be aware and get involved, Bell said, urging women over age 50 not to delay their annual mammograms.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Is Saturday

The 2015 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will take place at Fifth Third Field on Saturday, October 17 starting at 8:00 a.m.

This event is part of a national fundraising effort. In 2014, over 1 million walkers across the country collected more than $60 million to help fight this disease.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. The Dragons website, www.daytondragons.com, has gone pink in October in support of efforts by Kettering Health Network to increase Breast Cancer awareness in the Miami Valley.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between ages 40 and 55. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and it’s estimated that over 40,000 lives will be lost to breast cancer in 2015. And while the breast cancer diagnosis rate has increased, there has been a steady drop in the overall breast cancer death rate since the early 1990’s.

You can help win the fight. The walk and donations go directly to the support, transportation, recovery and other needs that arise with the diagnosis of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society also invests in groundbreaking breast cancer research to better understand, prevent, find and treat the disease.

This year, the walks are returning as in-person events across the five boroughs of New York City and beyond.

The Making Strides walks allow participants to celebrate survivorship, pay meaningful tributes to loved ones lost, and have a collective determination to raise funds to create a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer. We know the future can be free from Breast Cancer. Join the movement to save lives and fund the future of breast cancer research for our loved ones today and for the next generation.

An overcast sky and sprinkling rain did nothing to dampen the spirit for a small army of pink-clad women and men as they hit the trail Saturday morning from Graehl Park. Most had warmed up with exercises moments before and were full of energy.

The purpose: Making strides against breast cancer and to raise money for research, treatment and awareness of the disease, said Angela Merkle, event organizer and development manager for the American Cancer Society in Alaska.

The Making Strides event, sponsored this year by Kinross Fort Knox, also featured vendor booths and resources for patients, caregivers and survivors.

Making Strides 5Kers found themselves greeted on the other side the William Ransom Wood Memorial Pedestrian Bridge with flowers and a serenading by the Fairbanks Sweet Adelines.

Its been very successful, Merkle said. Its really a celebration of the survivors and thrivers and fighters.

What Is Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer involves a number of different events held by the American Cancer Society and their partners. The main goal of these events is to walk in honor of breast cancer survivors and caregivers, celebrate and honor those who have passed, educate the public about breast cancer prevention and detection, and raise funding to end breast cancer.

Walks occur all over the United States and participants can join as individuals or as teams.
