North Fork Breast Health Coalition Raises Funds To Aid Local Breast Cancer Survivors With 24th Annual 5k Walk At Tanger Outlets
The 24th annual 5K Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness stepped off Sunday morning at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, drawing more than 150 survivors, family members, friends and supporters, despite overcast skies and drizzle at the start of the event.
The event is a fundraiser for the North Fork Breast Health Coalition, an all-volunteer nonprofit that supports research to identify the causes of breast cancer, works to educate women about the importance of self-exams and annual mammograms and provides direct support and services to breast cancer patients and survivors living on the North Fork. These include yoga, reflexology, massage therapy and a semi-monthly support group, as well as access to the Rita Duva Boutique, which provides wigs, scarves, prosthetics and other items to breast cancer survivors.
Bernadette Tuthill, NFBHC vice president and co-chairperson of the walk, said Sunday the organization has recently seen an increase in people with metastatic or late-stage diagnoses seeking the groups services.
Because of COVID, people werent going for their screenings, Tuthill said Sunday morning. So weve seen an increased demand for our services and grants and wigs and prosthetics. Events like this help us fund that so we can provide it to our members free of charge, she said. Were also People coming back with metastatic diagnosis.
They helped me navigate the entire process of diagnosis and surgery and procedures, she explained.
Last Year For Komen 3
It began in 2003 as the Breast Cancer 3-Day, and over the past 16 years, it has grown to become one of the most recognizable breast cancer awareness fundraisers in Philadelphia.
Each October, participants walking for themselves, or loved ones who have had breast cancer, take to the streets to do a three-day, 60-mile walk for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation festooned all in pink, from customized tutus, to wigs, Mardi Gras beads and even shoes.
You see them as you drive to work, or take the kids to school. The car honking and cheering goes on all day, from Erdenheim, through Chestnut Hill, beginning and ending in Center City.
This years walk is from Oct. 18-20.
Since its inception, the walk for solidarity and awareness has raised more than $848 million nationwide for breast cancer research and this year will mark its final journey through Philadelphia. The 3-Day will move on to other cities nationwide next year, but while it has been a longtime tradition here, the Susan G. Komen organization will continue its two largest fundraisers, the Pink Tie Ball this month on Oct. 12, and the Komen Philadelphia More Than Pink Walk, formerly known as Race for the Cure, on Mothers Day weekend.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Sept. 27, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Susan G. Komen®, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, will hold an in-person MORE THAN PINK Walk to raise critical funds that support breast cancer patients and remove barriers to care to improve outcomes for everyone impacted by the disease. The Walk will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, at North Point Park.

Troon Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness With Play For Pink Day Oct 20
In celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness month, Kapalua Golf is holding a fundraising outing on Oct. 20 on The Bay Course. A portion of funds from the event will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation through its Play for P.I.N.K.
Players will be offered a special rate for that day of $189 plus tax and $59 plus tax Kamaaina. In addition, a PAR 3 Hit the Green Challenge on Hole No. 15 will be available. Players can donate any amount in $5 increments for a chance to hit the green and double their money in pro shop credit.
Specials at the Bay Course golf shop and on post-round craft cocktails and signature menu items at Taverna Restaurant help round out the day.

Organizers Pleased With Turnout For Pink Walk For Breast Cancer Heart Disease At Miami
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. Hundreds of people walked across the finish line for the 6th annual Pink Walk on Sunday.
The event took place around 7 a.m. with an opening ceremony followed by the start of the walk at 7:30 a.m. at Miami-Dade College North campus.
The event was organized by the Womens Breast and Heart Initiative to raise awareness, provide a platform for disease reduction strategies and offer resources to help support prevention and early detection among college students, at-risk women and other targeted communities.
A virtual opportunity was also extended to participants who desired to walk around their own neighborhood or other outdoor location.
The local non-profit organizers estimated that 700 participants came out for the Pink Walk with the goal to raise $100,000 to help raise awareness for both causes.

Tidelands Reschedules In The Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Walk Ahead Of Hurricane Ian
MURRELLS INLET, S.C. The impact of Hurricane Ian on the Grand Strand has forced Tidelands Health to postpone its breast cancer awareness walk.
The In the Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Walk was set to take place on Saturday, Oct. 1 but has now been moved to Saturday, Oct. 8.
The weather forecast really gave us no other option but to delay the In the Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Walk for a week, said Jessica Sasser, executive director of the Tidelands Health Foundation, which organizes the fundraising walk. We thank our participants, sponsors and vendors for their understanding and flexibility. We look forward to seeing all of you Saturday, Oct. 8, in Murrells Inlet.
All of the walkers who have registered for the event have been notified about the date change.
Online registration has now been extended until Friday, Oct. 7 at noon for those who want to participate.
The event will start at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Tidelands Health Cancer Care Network. The walk to the Murrells Inlet Marshwalk will begin at 10 a.m.
This will be the first time in two years that the walk will take place in person, instead of virtually, due to the COVID pandemic.
