Is It Bad To Listen To Music While Sleeping
Its fine to fall asleep listening to music, Breus says, but dont wear earbuds or headphones to bed. They can be uncomfortable, and if you roll over wearing earbuds, you could hurt your ear canal. Instead, he recommends pillow speakers. These devices are exactly what they sound like: pillows with speakers inside them.
Underwire Bra & The Risk Of Breast Cancer
Though underwire bras are becoming more popular in the fashion industry, It has become a concerning issue. The key reason is wearing underwire bras is one of the main causes of breast cancer. If you still wear them, you should check whether they are the cause of your cancer.
In recent years, many in the scientific community have been in a debate about the possible link between breast cancer and underwire bras. One leading source in a study that linked bras with breast cancer was Dr. Sallie W. Hamman, a professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Southern Californias Keck School of Medicine. In her 1997 article, she states, There is evidence that there may be a link between breast cancer and wearing an underwire bra.
For your kind information: there are about 1.4 million new cases of breast cancer in the United States each year, and 585,000 women die from it. This is a scary number that comes with a surprising cause: underwire bras. The reason why women wear these undergarments is to help them fit their bras better, giving the appearance of larger breasts.
But most of the time breast cancer is caused by toxins of breast tissue. Especially those who do breast implants to increase breast size are at higher risk of breast cancer. This information source is the American Cancer Society. No matter what type of bra you wear, the matter is you wear.
So if you want to know can underwire bra cause breast cancer & and the answer is YES. Unfortunately yes.
Myth : They Make Your Breasts Droop
No way. If anything, they might keep you perkier for longer.
The breast can change shape over time due to structures called Coopers ligaments these are like rubber bands that help give lift and support, and which become more lax as we age, says Roshani Patel, MD, breast surgical oncologist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock. Anything that causes stress on the Coopers ligaments can alter their shape.
The prime example of this is free-boobing, or wearing a bra thats not supportive enough so that your breasts hang down, stretching out these ligaments.
Because sports bras generally offer more support than a regular bra, we asked Dr. Patel whether they might actually help prevent breast sagging: Theoretically and logically, the answer would be yes, she says. But there is no clinical data on this.

So What Does Affect The Risk Of Breast Cancer
Its impossible to know for sure what caused each individual breast cancer. But the evidence from years of research has shown there are some things that can help you stack the odds of avoiding breast cancer in your favour. Keeping a healthy weight, drinking less alcohol and keeping active all make a difference, and that is backed by evidence.
There are also some other factors you cant control, such as getting older. And others may be difficult to avoid. Taking HRT and being exposed to radiation also increase the risk of breast cancer and its important women are aware of this when theyre making healthcare decisions. On the other hand, breastfeeding decreases risk, but not everyone is able to and there are other factors that can influence this decision for women.
Not all breast cancer myths focus on supposed causes of the disease. Women may have been told to check their breasts in a particular way, time or place. But they dont need to. The important thing is getting to know whats normal for you, and to tell your doctor if you notice any unusual or lasting changes.
As ever, good quality research rather than hoaxes and anecdotes is the best way to keep an eye on new potential causes of cancer.
And with clear information available on what people can do to reduce their risk, its best to ignore the scare stories.

Why Does The False Theory Of Bras Causing Breast Cancer Persist
Its not clear why a theory that bras cause breast cancer, a theory that has been thoroughly disproven, persists. Perhaps it comes from the frustration of not knowing what causes the disease, coupled with a desire that the disease should come from the outside, from something a woman can control.
In any case, lets stop worrying about breast cancer being caused by wearing a bra!

Your Breasts Droop As You Get Older
TRUE. Thats due to stretching of the Coopers ligaments, the connective tissue in your breasts that helps keep em up and looking perky. Like all the tissue in your body, theyre made up of collagen and elastin, which break down as you age, explains Dan Mills, MD, vice president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In addition, as you go through menopause, dense glandular tissue is replaced by fat thats more likely to droop, he says.

Disproven Or Controversial Breast Cancer Risk Factors
There are some factors that research has shown are not linked to breast cancer. You may see information online or hear about these disproven or controversial risk factors, but it’s important to learn the facts.
For information on known and possible breast cancer risk factors, see:
Common Fears With No Evidence: Antiperspirants And Bras
In media stories and on Internet postings some factors have been widely rumored to increase breast cancer risk. For example, right now, there is no evidence to back the claims that antiperspirants, underwire bras, and wearing a bra at night are causes of breast cancer. The claims are based on these concerns:
- Antiperspirant chemicals are absorbed through the skin, block the release of toxins when you sweat, and cause these toxins to build up in the breast.
- Underwire bras cause breast cancer by blocking the drainage of lymph fluid from the bottom of the breast so it can’t get back into your body.
There is no scientific evidence to support either of these rumors.
Even the strongest antiperspirant doesn’t block all perspiration in the armpit. Most cancer-causing substances are removed by the kidneys and released through urine or processed by the liver. Sweating isn’t a significant way for your body to release toxins. And while there are concerns about chemicals, such as phthalates and parabens used for fragrance and preservation, from a whole list of personal care products being absorbed by the body, these chemicals are unlikely to be culprits in causing breast cancer.

Does Deodorant Cause Cancer
Using deodorant or antiperspirant does not cause breast cancer.
Claims that deodorants or antiperspirants increase your risk of breast cancer have been around for several years.
Some people have also claimed that aluminium in antiperspirants can increase your risk.
However, theres no convincing evidence of a link between breast cancer and deodorants, antiperspirants or their ingredients.

Risk Factors You Cant Control
- Sex: Women represent 99% of all breast cancer patients and have a 12.1% chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.
- Age: The chances of getting breast cancer increase with age. About 65% of women are over 55 years old when they are diagnosed.
- Race: After age 45, white women are more likely to get breast cancer than black women, but black women have a higher incidence before age 45 and are more likely to die from breast cancer.
- Family history: Certain inherited gene mutations increase the risk of developing breast cancer. However, these genes account for only 5-10% of overall cases. Even without those genes, having a grandmother, mother, sister, or daughter diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer increases the risk.
Myths About Bras Arent Supported
Wearing a bra or keeping a mobile phone in your bra hasnt been shown to cause cancer. There hasnt been much research into this because theres no scientific way that suggests how bras and cancer might be linked. The only relevant study we found on the research database PubMed didnt find a link between wearing a bra and breast cancer so women dont need to worry about getting the support they need.
Although we cant know for sure the potential long-term impact of using mobile phones on other types of cancer, scientists believe a link is unlikely. This has been most closely studied in relation to brain tumours. And its something researchers will keep an eye on.

How Is A Lump At The Bra Line Diagnosed
Breast lumps can occur anywhere on either breast. Theres no significance to a lump being on or under the left breast versus the right breast.
In some cases, a doctor can give you a diagnosis just by examining the lump. This may be true in the case of a lipoma, for example.
In many cases, additional tests are needed to make the diagnosis. Depending on your symptoms and physical examination, these may include:
Citing The Evidence About Breast Cancer Risk
A book published in 1995 reported a scientific study that linked wearing a bra to increased breast cancer risk due to improper circulation in the lymphatic system, causing toxins to build up in the breasts. While that study does show correlationa relationship between the twoit does not prove causation. This may be because the first study did not take into account many other factors that increase the risk of breast cancer, such as older age or being obese.
In fact, because obese women may be more likely to wear a bra than smaller-chested women, this could affect the first studys conclusions. Another study that collected data on breast size noted exactly thatresearchers found that premenopausal women who dont wear a bra had half the risk of breast cancer as women who do wear bras and speculated that a womans weight and breast size may have been the reason for the difference in risk.
Because of the concerns and about whether bras cause , a recent study looked specifically at the many factors that go into the relationship between wearing a bra and breast cancer risk. The study included more than 1,500 women, and about two-thirds had breast cancer and about one-third did not. Researchers evaluated variables such as bra cup size, how often and how long the bra was worn, whether the bra had underwire, and the womans age was when she first began wearing a bra. The researchers concluded that none of these factors was associated with an increase in breast cancer risk.

Your Bra Could Be Killing You
The idea that wearing an underwired bra can cause breast cancer has been around since 1995, when Sydney Singer and Soma Grismaijer published their book Dressed to Kill, which claimed there was a link. The idea was revived last year when a practitioner of alternative medicine wrote an essay on Gwyneth Paltrows website, Goop. What these people have in common is that none of them is a cancer researcher or medical doctor.
Singer and Grismaijers study was not reviewed by medical experts and published in a respected journal, as is the norm for bona fide scientific discoveries. According to a version of their story now doing the rounds on Twitter, they interviewed more than 4,000American women and discovered that women who dont wear bras have a 1 in 168 chance of developing breast cancer, as opposed to a 3 in 4 chance for those who wear a bra 24 hours a day.
Their explanation is that underwired bras block circulation of lymphatic fluid, causing breasts to swell with toxins . It is unlikely, though, that that lymph fluidwould be trapped by an underwire, because it doesnt flow in that direction, and a properly fitting bra prevents breast ligaments from overstretching. Scientists have also criticised Dressed to Kill for not taking into account known risk factors for breast cancer, most notably obesity, which increases the likelihood a woman will wear a bra for longer periods.
While Browsing Through A Bookstore I Came Across A Book That Claimed That Underwire Bras Can Cause Breast Cancer I Wear An Underwire Bra Am I Increasing My Risk Of Cancer
I searched the medical literature for studies on underwire bras and a possible link to cancer, and I did not find any. I also consulted with Dr. Hiram Cody III, an attending surgeon on the breast service at New Yorks Memorial Sloan-Kettering, one of the premier cancer treatment centers in the world. Dr. Cody, who says that he is frequently asked this question by his patients, confirms that there are absolutely no data to support the connection between the type of brought a woman wears and her risk of developing breast cancer. In Dr. Cody s own words, Cancer is a complicated process. Its probably absurd to think that a bra has anything to do with it.
As to whether underwire bras are dangerous in other ways, I would have to say that there is a remote possibility that a poorly fitted or a worn-out bra could cause problems. For example, if a bra is too tight, it could cause significant pain due to pressure on the ribs. In addition, if the underwire supporting the cup breaks through the fabric and cuts the skin, it could in rare circumstances result in an infection. My advice is to use your common sense. Do not wear a bra if it is too tight. If you wear an underwire bra, examine it carefully before each wearing. If the wire is beginning to poke through the fabric, retire the bra.

Thoughts On Can Bras Cause Breast Cancer
This post was by far one of the most interesting posts I have read to date! I knew that bras have been proven to not be as beneficial to our health as we had perviously thought, but I had no idea that there is a correlation between bras and breast cancer. This is scary because I know a lot of girls who were bras constantly. Why a lot of women tend to do this always confused me because my favorite part of the day is taking my bra off. I thought that the studies you found were particularly interesting. The fact that the correlation of bras with breast cancer is four times as high as the correlation between smoking and lung cancer is terrifying. While doctors still do not know if wearing a bra constantly truly does cause breast cancer, I will definitely be more cautious!
This is an interesting topic considering many girls wear bras for literally 24 hours a day. I for one cant wait until I get to take my bra off for the day. Although people should think about the possible risks, I dont know if there is enough evidence to prove bras cause breast cancer. It definitely is a scary fact to think that something girls need on a daily basis could be so harmful. I agree with the others that a bra shouldnt be worn at night especially if doctors have said not too. It would be cool to see more research done on this topic.
Another Common Worry Includes The Impact Of Wearing A Bra At Night
The most common ones being that wearing a bra at night, and wearing an underwire bra causes cancer. Is it so?
Dr Tanaya, who describes herself as a millennial doctor on Instagram, shared an informative post that dismissed underwired bras as cancer causing agents. Check out the post here:

However, she added that women can face discomfort while wearing an underwired bra if the wire starts poking out of the casing, which may also hurt, The only problem that comes with an underwired bra is when the wire starts poking out, which makes it painful, or if you are wearing an ill-fitting bra.
Agreed Dr Sandeep Nayak P, Director, Department of Surgical Oncology & Robotic & Laparoscopic Surgery, Fortis Hospitals, Bengaluru, and said: Cancer is caused by changes in DNA and cannot be caused by factors other than age, heredity, and so on. What one wears has no bearing on the disease-causing cellular alterations.
He added that there is no current medical research that suggests a link between underwired bras and cancer. Earlier research considered that the under-wire caused internal compression and lymphatic obstruction in the body, but scientific research shows no link between the two, he told indianexpress.com.
