Can Roundup Cause Breast Cancer

Affect Of Roundup On Animals

Round Up! for breast cancer research

Roundup is thought to have “sufficient evidence” of being carcinogenic in animals according to the IARC.

In a 2020 review of several studies on rats and mice , there was relatively strong evidence that glyphosate can lead to hemangiosarcomas , kidney tumors, and lymphomas. Other tumors that were found to be increased included basal cell cancers of the skin, tumors of the adrenal gland, and liver tumors.

Looking at the underlying mechanism , a different study found that glyphosate was able to induce the mutations in B cells that can play a role both in B-cell non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma.

What Are The Top Tips To Avoid Exposure To Glyphosate

  • If outside in agricultural areas, wear fitted protective clothing including long sleeves, pants, boots, gloves and masks when exposed to pesticides containing toxic chemicals. Clothing made of synthetic material is more resistant to penetration by herbicides, and non-organic cotton may be contaminated by glyphosate.,
  • Wash produce well before eating. Where possible, buy USDA certified organic produce, which has not been treated with pesticides or herbicides. This includes oats, soy and other beans, in addition to fruits and vegetables.

Whats The Bottom Line On Roundup Exposure

Your body has been designed to handle a wide range of natural toxins, but synthetic substances are different. The cells of your body are known recognize xenobiotics as foreign, and this can cause a reaction with your body as if it were an infection.

This constant, chronic exposure can cause a range of diseases and allergic reactions. We currently are aware of several diseases which glyphosate appears to cause, but many more are likely yet to be found.

Though small amounts of glyphosate are likely safe, nothing is safe about the chronic exposure many of us endure on a daily basis, especially those in agriculture and lawn care. It is absolutely critical that we are aware of our environment, and respond accordingly. That starts with becoming informed and sharing information.

Why Is There No Roundup Recall

Many people have been asking why Roundup hasnt been recalled? This is due to a number of reasons. First, there is still an ongoing debate in the scientific community on whether Roundup causes cancer. Second, there is the decision by the EPA not to ban Roundup products. Both of those areas are fluid, and it is, therefore, possible that Roundup may be recalled in the future. Several countries, including, ironically, Bayers home country of Germany, have put plans in place to ban or gradually phase out Roundup and other glyphosate-based products.

Other Scientific Papers And Literature Reviews

In addition to the above studies, scientists often write papers summarizing the scientific literature related to a particular toxic substance. Several such studies have been written about Roundup weed killer and its active ingredient, glyphosate.

Title: Glyphosate, a chelating agentrelevant for ecological risk assessment?Journal: Environmental Science and Pollution ResearchLead Author: Martha Mertens

The biological path by which glyphosate kills plants that are not genetically modified to resist it is well known. But glyphosate causes other toxic effects that have received relatively little study or attention by government agencies. This is particularly true for glyphosate as a chelating agent, where the chemical either increases plant toxicity or reduces the plants micronutrient uptake. In this literature review of over 200 studies, the authors summarize the results of research into biological mechanisms that contribute to the toxicity of glyphosate and glyphosate-based herbicides . In doing so, they make clear the dangers that Roundup and similar formulations pose to consumers who might ingest these plants.

Roundup Linked To Cancer

Agribusiness Monsanto has found itself in the middle of a series of lawsuits filed by individuals claiming to have gotten ill with cancer due to Roundup. Roundup is an herbicide used to kill weeds, including annual broadleaf weeds and grasses that compete with crops. St. Louis-based agribusiness, Monsanto, is the manufacturer of Roundup and it has been on the market ever since the 1970s. A study conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer found the Roundup cancer causing agent to likely be its main ingredient, glyphosate. Researchers regarded glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen and performed lab tests on animals, concluding the chemical damaged DNA in human cells.

On the contrary, Monsanto has detested those research findings and have argued that their product is safe. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization , and the WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues also took Monsantos side in the Roundup linked to cancer debate, stating that glyphosate is unlikely to pose a risk to human health. With that said, critics, including Greenpeace, have wondered if the UN/JMPRs conclusion was biased due to some of their members having prior involvement with Monsanto.

The pesticide-fighting product, Roundup, has been making headlines in the past year;due to large jury verdicts from lawsuits filed by people who claim this weed killer caused them to develop cancer. Studies have also linked Roundups active ingredient to a higher risk of developing cancer. The ingredient has been linked to numerous health issues.

Below, find out what jobs may put you more at risk for being exposed to this hazardous fiber. The;defective product lawyers;at OConnor, Acciani & Levy can advise you of your legal options.

The Process In Detail

“Glyphosate can cause cancer”

The study showed that exposure to glyphosate led to a marked reduction in the levels of a molecular tag on the DNA that is known as methylation. Further, the authors of the study revealed the mechanism by which this takes place. The glyphosate induced a several-fold increase in a protein called TET3, which is known to remove methylation tags from DNA.

Normally when the DNA of a gene is tagged by methylation, it is not expressed. When the methylation tags are removed, the gene can be reactivated. Such changes in gene function caused by alterations in the profile of DNA methylation tags are known to be a contributing factor to cancer formation .

This appears to have been the case in this study, as when a second cancer-inducing agent was combined with the glyphosate, this led to the transformation of the human breast cells to a cancerous state.

The second cancer-inducing agent was a class of small RNA molecules known as microRNA, which are involved in the regulation of gene expression. In the new study, the alterations in gene function induced by glyphosate through the removal of the DNA methylation tags, combined with the changes in gene function caused by the addition of microRNA-182-5p , led to the formation of breast cancer cells.

micro-RNA182-5p is a naturally occurring gene regulatory molecule that is present in everyone. Dysfunction of microRNA182-5p has been linked with cancers of different types.

Does Roundup Cause Breast Cancer

Roundup, the weed killing herbicide made with the active ingredient glyphosate, has sparked much controversy over the years with many studies showing Roundup linked to cancer. As a result, many individuals have also been asking the questions: What kind of cancer does Roundup cause and does Roundup cause breast cancer?

Groups Urge Epa To Reconsider

The EPA determines safe exposure levels of chemicals. The agency last assessed of glyphosate 3 years ago.

The main source of the chemical in drinking water is runoff from herbicide use, the agency says. But it doesnât last long in H2O.

Drinking water with more than a little glyphosate in it over many years could damage the kidneys and reproductive organs, the EPA says. But, the agency says, thereâs not enough evidence to say whether or not having water with glyphosate in it over the course of your life has the potential to cause cancer.

The EPA says in a statement it will consider the IARCâs conclusion as part of a scheduled re-evaluation of the chemical, which happens every 15 years.

Other chemicals the IARC has named as âprobableâ carcinogens include acrylamide, the chemical that comes from cooking high-carbohydrate foods such as potato chips and French fries, nitrates in cured meats like bacon and hot dogs,and emissions from wood burned inside the home.

âExposure to a known carcinogen like tobacco doesnât mean youâll get cancer,â says Curt DellaValle, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group, an advocacy group focused on the environment and public health. âIt depends on a lot of things, like the amount of exposure and genetics.â

DellaValleâs organization joined with seven other environmental groups urging the EPA to âweigh heavilyâ the IARCâs conclusion during its re-evaluation of glyphosate.

Exposure To Glyphosate In Your Food

You may also be exposed to glyphosate in your food.

Many farmers use glyphosate products in their fields and orchards. They spray it on crops like corn and soybeans that are genetically engineered to withstand glyphosate, also known as GMOs. They also spray it on non-GMO crops like wheat, barley, oats, and beans, to dry out the crops so they can harvest them sooner.

It gets into foods early in the food chain, before raw food is harvested and before itâs processed.

Roundup And Gut Bacteria

CancerNews roundup: 1⣠Being overweight or obese causes ...

Simply stated, just as glyphosate blocks the shikimate pathway in plants, it disrupts a similar pathway in humans. Though shikimic acid is unique to plants and not produced in humans, glyphosate interrupts the functions of several amino acids and enzymes.

Thats not all, one of these enzymes, cytochrome P450, is crucial for proper gut function^. This enzyme is produced by the gut microbiome, and is absolutely necessary for helping the body detoxify from xenobiotics, and environmental toxins. Over the long term, this inhibition of the cytochrome P450 can lead to a range of diseases, most commonly perhaps is celiac disease. But that is only the start.

You may think the gut microbiome is insignificant, but recently science is finding out otherwise. In fact, gut health is one of the most important aspects to maintaining a healthy body.; Recently coined the second brain by Dr. Michael D. Gershon’s, it has been found that the gut is directly linked to the brain, and cognitive well being, and that is only the start ^ .

Gm Soybeans Are Linked To Causing Cancer

08/11/2016 / By Vicki Batts

A study led by researchers from Thailand has revealed the dangers of genetically modified soybeans. The study found that genistein, the most prevalent phytoestrogen found in unfermented soy, is a substantial cancer-causing agent.

Soybeans contain a variety of isoflavones capable of disrupting the endocrine system. Estrogen is a steroid hormone that is often affected by the consumption of these specific isoflavones, which are also ;referred to as phytoestrogens. These phytoestrogens have long been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, but this new study has highlighted how synergistic the effects of phytoestrogens and glyphosate can be.

When combined with glyphosate, as Roundup Ready soybeans are, the effects of breast-cancer causing genistein may be even more pronounced. Consumption of soybeans, particularly those of GM origin, in conjunction with glyphosate exposure, could indeed be a leading cause of the ever-increasing incidence of breast cancer. The Thai researchers also found that glyphosate actually acts on estrogen receptors in the body to promote the growth of hormone-dependent breast cancer cells. While it was previously known that glyphosate is estrogenic, this new finding underlines the explicit danger of consuming genetically modified Roundup Ready soybeans, or products made with them.

Have Any Lawsuits Been Filed Against Roundup

There have been many Canada class action lawsuits and other countries filed against Roundup. There have reportedly been at least 700 lawsuits against Monsanto and other related firms in the courts.;

Around 25 lawsuits have been in the U.S. by people accusing Roundup of causing non-Hodgkin lymphoma.;

One lawsuit states that awoman who has been exposed to Roundup from the time she was 12 years old, developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2014. The plaintiff had been a crop worker on farms throughout much of her life. She claims Roundup is the reason for her cancer diagnosis.

The plaintiffs lawyer in the case currently has four open cases against Monsanto.;

I Worked With Roundup Am I At Risk Of Cancer

Many people that work with Roundup are at risk of developing cancer.; The issue, however, is it depends on the individual as to how much exposure will result in cancer.; Everybody is different, and some may not actually become sick from this product.

When you look at studies that use enough people, the overall consensus is clear: the more you handle Roundup, or specifically glyphosate, the greater your risk of developing cancer.; However, this doesnt mean that you can safely use the product just a little bit.

Most people who have developed cancer from Roundup are suffering from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, or NHL.; This blood cancer starts in the lymph nodes and affects the bodys immune system.; Many of those that have been diagnosed with NHL have worked with glyphosate extensively.; However, there is always the possibility that using the product just a few times will result in cancer.

Monsanto, the company that manufactures Roundup, wont admit that there is anything wrong with their product.; They maintain that if you use it correctly, it poses no risk or danger to you, or the environment.; This is despite the fact that there are numerous studies showing otherwise.

Does This Common Pesticide Cause Cancer

The International Agency for Research on Cancer , a research arm of the World Health Organization, in March said that glyphosate is a âprobableâ cancer-causing substance, or carcinogen. Itâs a key ingredient in hundreds of crop-control agents and weed killers, such as Bronco, Glifonox, KleenUp, Ranger Pro, Rodeo, Roundup, and Weedoff.

The finding — challenged by Roundup maker Monsanto — comes decades after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said glyphosate is safe for people. The agency reaffirmed that decision in 2012.

It is the most widely used pesticide worldwide, sprayed on everything from golf courses to home gardens. The chemical is mainly used in agriculture, and sprayed on genetically modified crops like soy, corn, and cotton. The plants are designed to resist the pesticide, which is used to kill weeds around them.

In a fact sheet, the EPA says workers or home gardeners might breathe it in or get it on their skin âduring spraying, mixing, and cleanup.â

Pesticides Organic Food And Breast Cancer Risk

Exposure to certain banned pesticides increases breast cancer risk. Some of these persist in the environment.

Pesticides which are currently used, e.g. glyphosate and malathion , may also increase breast cancer risk, although more studies are needed to confirm this.

Certain pesticides are carcinogens or endocrine disrupting chemicals that interfere with oestrogen. Early life exposure may affect breast development, increasing susceptibility to breast cancer later in life.;

Eating organic food will reduce pesticide exposure.

Who Is Most Likely To Be Exposed To Gbhs

There are relatively few studies documenting glyphosate and GBH levels in people, and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey does not include glyphosate or its commercial products in the library of chemicals it tests for in human urine and serum. Those studies that have been conducted indicate that agricultural workers who are exposed to GBHs, and their family members have significant body burdens of the chemicals, as do people who live in the general area where crops are sprayed. For people living in comparable areas, children have higher levels than do adults.

Since there is not regular NHANES or other large-scale measurement of glyphosate and GBH levels, less is known about levels in the general population although a few studies have found measurable levels in urine sample from non-occupationally exposed people, including pregnant women.
