What Can Happen After An Injury To The Breast
If someone has an injury or blow to the breast, they might check it themselves or have it checked by a health professional. If theres already a cancer in the area, these checks could find it. This doesnt mean that the injury has caused the cancer.
Sometimes an injury can cause a lump thats not cancer. This can be bruising or scar tissue that can form when the body naturally repairs itself. Theres no evidence to suggest that these lumps increase the risk of cancer, but they may need treatment if they dont go away on their own.
If you notice a change to the look or feel of your breasts, or anything else thats not normal for you, tell your doctor. It probably wont be cancer, but its important to have it checked.
There are many myths about what causes cancer, including physical injuries to breasts. However, there are also proven causes, and things you can do to reduce your risk.
How Does Cancer Research Uk Evaluate Evidence
We regularly review new research on the causes of cancer to make sure our information is up to date and based on the best quality evidence. We develop our information by looking at lots of research carried out over many years. So, although new research comes out all the time, it is unlikely that one new study would change our position on a topic.
Some studies are better than others at telling us about how different factors affect cancer risk. These are some of the things we consider:
- Did the study look at cells, animals or people?
Studies in animals and cells can help scientists understand how cancer works, but they cant always tell us how its relevant to humans. So we focus on studies in people.
- How big is the study and how long did it go on for?
Studies on small numbers of people arent as reliable, because results are more likely to happen by chance. And studies that only follow people for a short amount of time can miss long-term effects. So we mainly look at studies that follow thousands of people over many years.
- Did the study account for other factors that could affect someones cancer risk?
There are lots of factors that can affect someones risk of cancer. Studies should take known risk factors into account. For example, if a study is looking at air pollution and lung cancer, it should also look at whether participants smoked.
- Where is the study published and who funded it?

Breast Injury Causes Loss Of Confidence And Enjoyment
An unseen and very real issue is that a hit to the breasts takes you out of the game and can decrease confidence and enjoyment in your sport. In a study carried out by QP Sport and Sheffield-Hallam University, one of the surprising results was that women often suck it up when they are hit in the breast and experience pain. Women told us they don’t want to make a big deal of being hit in the breasts and let others watching the game see them hurt in that area. Watch this TV interview discussing breast injuries in contact sport.

Causes Of Breast Cancer: How Did This Happen
When youre told that you have breast cancer, its natural to wonder what may have caused the disease. But no one knows the exact causes of breast cancer. Doctors seldom know why one woman develops breast cancer and another doesnt, and most women who have breast cancer will never be able to pinpoint an exact cause. What we do know is that breast cancer is always caused by damage to a cells DNA.

Do Underwire Bras Cause Breast Cancer
Underwire bras do not increase your risk of breast cancer.
There have been some concerns that the wires in the cup of underwire bras may restrict the flow of lymph fluid in the breast causing toxins to build up in the area. However, theres no reliable evidence to support this.
If your bra is too tight or too small, the wires can dig into your breasts and cause discomfort, pain or swelling. Find out more about wearing a well-fitting bra.
Sore Breasts And Menopause
Menopause is another process of hormonal change, and this can cause breast pain in the same way your period does. Some women may find that during peri-menopause that their cyclical breast pain worsens, due to erratic hormone levels. Its also worth mentioning that many women have anxiety about breast pain they might feel after menopause, assuming it is a sign of breast cancer. The good news is that only 2%7% of women with non-cyclical breast pain in one spot will go on to receive a cancer diagnosis.

Breast Cancer Patient Punched And Insulted By Activists Protesting Clinics Mask Policy
A breast cancer patient says she was physically assaulted and verbally abused outside a treatment centre in West Hollywood, Los Angeles.
Far-right activists who were angry over the clinics mandatory mask policy gathered outside the Cedars-Sinai Breast Health Services building on Thursday and harassed patients and doctors, reports Vice.
Kate Burns, a patient at the centre, approached the group and told them to leave. The exchange was caught on camera by a local videographer and posted on Twitter.
A protester asked her why she was so angry, and Ms Burns replied: Because Ive just gone through f****** breast cancer, Burns said. And you m*****f****** are here.
That has nothing to do with you, one man replied. Were trying to help.
It has everything to do with me and my community, Ms Burns said. Do you know anything about chemotherapy? Do you know what happens to the immune system?
Protesters asked her if she was familiar with the Civil Rights Act. Get on the right side of history, one man told her. Youve got a lot of anger you need to release. Its a very dangerous emotion.
The situation escalated as more apparent far-right, anti-maskers arrived, and a confrontation between them and a group of anti-fascists developed.
One woman shoved Ms Burns, and punched her several times. Ms Burns said that the woman hit her in the chest and struck her scars.
Second Cancers After Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors
Survivors of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors can be affected by a number of health problems, but often their greatest concern is facing another cancer. Cancer that comes back after treatment is called a recurrence. But some cancer survivors develop a new, unrelated cancer later. This is called a second cancer.
Unfortunately, being treated for one cancer doesnt mean you cant get another. People who have had a pancreatic NET can still get the same types of cancers that other people get. In fact, they might be at higher risk for certain types of cancer.
People who have or had a pancreatic NET can get any type of second cancer, but they have a higher risk than the general population of developing:

Previous Breast Cancer Or Lump
If you have previously had breast cancer or early non-invasive cancer cell changes in breast ducts, you have a higher risk of developing it again, either in your other breast or in the same breast.
A benign breast lump does not mean you have breast cancer, but certain types of breast lumps may slightly increase your risk of developing cancer.
Some benign changes in your breast tissue, such as cells growing abnormally in ducts , or abnormal cells inside your breast lobes , can make getting breast cancer more likely.
What Is Testicular Torsion
Testicular torsion can happen from an injury, like being kicked in the groin, or from strenuous activity. Sometimes it can even happen for no apparent reason.
With torsion, the cords holding the testicles in place can become twisted. This cuts off the blood supply to the testicle. The result is a lot of pain. The testicle also gets bigger, feels tender, and begins to swell.
This is a medical emergency. It should be treated within six hours of when it happens.
Sometimes, the doctor can treat it by untwisting the testicle. Sometimes surgery is needed. If it isn’t treated, you could lose the testicle or lose its function.

What Is Testicular Rupture
Testicular rupture is very rare. It can happen from a direct, forceful blow. It can also be caused by the testicle being pressed against the pelvic bone.
Testicular rupture causes a lot of pain and swelling. It also causes nausea and vomiting. A rupture causes blood to leak into the scrotum. The damage requires surgery to repair.
What Are The Symptoms Of Breast Cancer In Children
Breast cancer in children is rare, and many of the symptoms can be caused by other, less serious conditions.
However, if your child has any of the following symptoms, they should be examined by a medical professional as soon as possible:
- a lump in the underarms, around the nipples, or anywhere in the breast area
- a change to the shape of the breast area thats not associated with puberty or weight gain
- skin at or around the breast that looks uneven, dimpled, or puckered
- skin at or around the breast thats red, scaly, itchy, or swollen
- a nipple that has turned inward
- blood or other fluids coming from the nipple
Remember: Typical breast development during puberty may result in asymmetry between breast size, but this is common.

Breast Changes In Your 40s
As you grow older, your breast tissue gradually becomes more fatty. Because fat has a different structure than breast tissue, this causes your breasts to become more droopy and saggy in your 40s. At this age, some women also develop fluid-filled cysts, in which fluid is trapped in breast ducts. These cysts can be painful but are typically found to be harmless. They are not known to affect your risk of developing breast cancer. However, it is important for you to monitor the presence of cysts or other masses to ensure your continued breast health.
Many women in their 40s also ask how they can prevent breast drooping. Practicing good posture and strengthening your core muscles can help your breasts look perkier. It also helps to find a supportive bra that lifts your breasts without digging into your skin.
Why Do People Think Breast Trauma Causes Cancer
People become concerned that breast trauma can cause cancer because the trauma can cause lumps to develop. These lumps, however, are not cancerous. There are two types of lumps that develop from trauma: a hematoma, which is a deep bruise that will heal, or a fat necrosis, which is scarred fatty tissue in the breast resulting from injury. There is no link between breast injury and breast cancer.
If you remain concerned about the risk to your breasts from an injury you sustained, you can get peace of mind from having a mammogram. Having regular 3D mammograms performed by an experienced board-certified breast imaging specialist is the best way to detect abnormalities early. If you do require annual mammograms, we invite you to visit PURE Mammography on Long Island today. There is no appointment necessary you can simply stop in at your convenience. You can also call 631-652-3424 or fill out the form on this page to learn more about PURE or to pre-schedule an appointment.

If Someone In My Family Has Cancer Am I Likely To Get Cancer Too
Not necessarily. Cancer is caused by harmful changes in genes. Only about 5 to 10 percent of cancers are caused by harmful mutations that are inherited from a persons parents. In families with an inherited cancer-causing mutation, multiple family members will often develop the same type of cancer. These cancers are called familial or hereditary cancers.
The remaining 90 to 95 percent of cancers are caused by mutations that happen during a persons lifetime as a natural result of aging and exposure to environmental factors, such as tobacco smoke and radiation. These cancers are called non-hereditary or spontaneous cancers. For more information about the risk of getting cancer, see the NCI fact sheet on Genetic Testing for Inherited Cancer Susceptibility Syndromes and Cancer Causes and Risk Factors.
Can Cancer Surgery Or A Tumor Biopsy Cause Cancer To Spread In The Body
The chance that surgery will cause cancer to spread to other parts of the body is extremely low. Following standard procedures, surgeons use special methods and take many steps to prevent cancer cells from spreading during biopsies or surgery to remove tumors. For example, if they must remove tissue from more than one area of the body, they use different surgical tools for each area. For information about how cancer spreads in the body, see our page on Metastatic Cancer.

Whats The Outlook For Children With Breast Cancer
Most children with breast tumors have fibroadenomas. Often, these disappear on their own. Fibroadenomas arent harmful or dangerous unless they mutate into cancerous tumors which is rare, especially in children.
A child or teen with a fibroadenoma will be watched to ensure it remains harmless. Doctors might do a biopsy of the tissue to ensure its benign.
For children with malignant breast cancer, the outlook can vary.
Just like most other types of cancer, controlling the spread makes a huge difference in the outcome. The goal is always for tumors to be treated or removed without spreading.
In general, the outlook for children with all cancer types is getting steadily better.
As of 2021, theres an 84 percent 5-year survival rate for children diagnosed with any type of cancer.
While there arent statistics on the exact survival rates of children with cancer of the breast, the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer in adult women is 90 percent .
The faster children get treatment for cancer, the better the odds will be. Cancer that hasnt spread is always easier to treat and cure.
So if your child has any issues concerning their breasts, ask your doctor about it as soon as you can.
Do Artificial Sweeteners Cause Cancer
No. Researchers have conducted studies on the safety of the artificial sweeteners saccharin cyclamate aspartame acesulfame potassium sucralose and neotame and found no evidence that they cause cancer in humans. All of these artificial sweeteners except for cyclamate have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for sale in the United States. For more information, see the NCI fact sheet on Artificial Sweeteners and Cancer.

How Can I Prevent Injury To My Testicles
First, be sure to always wear the proper equipment when playing sports that put you at risk.
For example:
- Athletic cups can be worn when playing sports like baseball, football, soccer, hockey, or karate. The cups are made out of hard plastic. They cover the groin area to protect it from injury.
- Athletic supporters, or jock straps, are made out of cloth. They have a special pouch that holds the testicles close to the body during strenuous exercise, cycling, or heavy lifting.
- Always follow the instructions of your coach about any additional protective gear that you should wear. Don’t be afraid to ask questions if there is something you don’t understand.
Always be sure to wear the proper size cup or supporter. One that’s too large or one that’s too small will not protect you from injury. Talk with your coach or your doctor if you have any questions about what to use.
Injuries to your testicles can be painful. But they don’t have to stop you from a healthy and exciting lifestyle. Just remember, they are not common, they are seldom serious, and you can take steps to protect yourself from injury.

Is Cancer A Death Sentence
In the United States, the likelihood of dying from cancer has dropped steadily since the 1990s. Five-year survival rates for some cancers, such as breast, prostate, and thyroid cancers, now are 90 percent or better. The 5-year survival rate for all cancers combined is currently about 67 percent. For more information, see the Annual Report to the Nation on the Status of Cancer.
It is important to note, however, that these rates are based on data from large numbers of people. How long an individual cancer patient will live and whether he or she will die from the disease depend on many factors, including whether the cancer is slow or fast growing, how much the cancer has spread in the body, whether effective treatments are available, the persons overall health, and more.
