Our Four Pillars Of Research

Every year Prevent Breast Cancer is investing in new and ongoing research projects that bring us one step closer to a future free from breast cancer. Through our research we try to find out who is most at risk of developing breast cancer and how we can prevent the disease. Our charity funds high-quality research projects that fall into four distinct pillars:

Please click on the links to learn more about each pillar of research and the studies we are currently funding:

Investigating how differences and mutations in someones genes can increase their chances of getting breast cancer in the future.

Identifying new and unique screening methods to ensure early and accurate diagnoses.

Investigating drugs that can be used as a preventative measure to reduce a persons risk of developing breast cancer.

Research into lifestyle factors that contribute to risk and how diet and exercise can reduce an individuals risk.

What To Do If You Find A Lump

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Dont panic if you think you feel a lump in your breast. Most women have some lumps or lumpy areas in their breasts all the time, and most breast lumps turn out to be benign . There are a number of possible causes of non-cancerous breast lumps, including normal hormonal changes, a , or an injury.

Dont hesitate to call your doctor if youve noticed a lump or other breast change that is new and worrisome. This is especially true for changes that last more than one full menstrual cycle or seem to get bigger or more prominent in some way. If you menstruate, you may want to wait until after your period to see if the lump or other breast change disappears on its own before calling your doctor. The best healthcare provider to call would be one who knows you and has done a breast exam on you before for example, your gynecologist, primary care doctor, or a nurse practitioner who works with your gynecologist or primary care doctor.

Make sure you get answers. Its important that your doctor gives you an explanation of the cause of the lump or other breast change and, if necessary, a plan for monitoring it or treating it. If youre not comfortable with the advice of the first doctor you see, dont hesitate to get a second opinion.

How To Make Breast Self

Locally Advanced Breast Cancer

Make it routine. The more you examine your breasts, the more you will learn about them and the easier it will become for you to tell if something has changed. Try to get in the habit of doing a breast self-examination once a month to familiarize yourself with how your breasts normally look and feel. Examine yourself several days after your period ends, when your breasts are least likely to be swollen and tender. If you are no longer having periods, choose a day that’s easy to remember, such as the first or last day of the month.

Get to know your breasts’ different neighborhoods. The upper, outer area near your armpit tends to have the most prominent lumps and bumps. The lower half of your breast can feel like a sandy or pebbly beach. The area under the nipple can feel like a collection of large grains. Another part might feel like a lumpy bowl of oatmeal.

Start a journal where you record the findings of your breast self-exams. This can be like a small map of your breasts, with notes about where you feel lumps or irregularities. Especially in the beginning, this may help you remember, from month to month, what is normal for your breasts. It is not unusual for lumps to appear at certain times of the month, but then disappear, as your body changes with the menstrual cycle .

Provide Clean Water To Those In Desperate Need

Contaminated water affects millions of people and can cause great harm to those that have to drink it to survive. Water that is left unfiltered can carry diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, dysentery, typhoid, and polio. Around one million people, from all over the world, die each year from water, sanitation and hygiene-related diseases due to unclean water.

Unclean water not only affects distant places, but within the United States as well. Many states and parts of the United States are supplied with unsafe and hazardous water.

Send Camp Bags And Kindness To Kids

Fun and memorable experiences at summer camp and day camps are a cherished part of growing up, but for children who are ill, dealing with other serious challenges or whose family is going through financial distress or have been through a natural disaster, going to camp or a special summer program can seem like an impossible dream.

Why Donate To Research

Cause Ribbons

Because research gets results.

When the National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1994, nearly 25 per cent of all women diagnosed with breast cancer died from the disease within five years of diagnosis.

Since then, survival rate has steadily improved. Now, 92 per cent of women are still alive five years post diagnosis.

NBCF believes this achievement is due to research the most effective way to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Although progress is being made, there is still a long way to go.

And we wont stop until it is solved.

Its not every day that youre able to do something so amazing. Make today that day.

Breast & Cervical Cancer Services

The Breast and Cervical Cancer Services program helps fund clinics across the state to give high-quality, low-cost and accessible breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services to women. Eligible clients receive these services free of charge. Regular screening tests might find precancerous tissue or cancer early, when treatment is likely to work best.

What Are Its Symptoms

The first noticeable symptom of breast cancer is a lump or an area of thickened tissue in the breast.

Most breast lumps arent cancerous, but its always best to have them checked by your doctor. Early detection is key when it comes to breast cancer survival rates.

Early breast cancer usually doesnt show symptoms. But as the tumour grows and moves through stages, it can change how the breast looks or feels.

Common changes include:

  • A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the armpit area
  • Change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Dimpling or puckering in the skin of the breast
  • Nipple becomes inverted
  • Abnormal discharge from the nipple
  • Scaly, red, or swollen skin on the breast, nipple, or areola
  • Breast skin takes on an orange peel look or feel

£25 can fund one of our cancer nurses for 1 hour our nurses are on hand to offer confidential support and guidance to people affected by cancer.

£70 could fund a clinical research bursary for 1 day, which support doctors to continue to carry out their pioneering work in the lab to find new ways to tackle cancer.

Screening Vs Diagnostic Mammogram

Does Oncotype DX Give Personalized Breast Cancer Treatment Reports For All Women?

The type of machine used and the process to get the first four images is the same for a screening or diagnostic mammogram. More images may need to be taken in a diagnostic mammogram to look at a specific area more closely, and different types of tools may be used to compress the tissue in different ways.

Your Support Helps Fund Innovative Research To Detect Breast Cancer Earlier

What if a bra could detect breast cancer? Through a grant awarded by CCS and partners, Dr Elijah Van Houten and his team are developing a bra that can detect small breast cancer tumours using cutting-edge technology that can sense and measure the differences between breast tumours and healthy breast tissue.

When detected early, breast cancers are more likely to be treated successfully. In addition to regular mammograms, this amazing technology could be part of the life-saving future of breast cancer screening.

We hope to transform breast cancer screening, making it a more comfortable, simple, regular and convenient way to undergo screening at home, says Dr Van Houten.

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, donate to help create a world where no Canadian fears breast cancer.

When you donate, you can also create a digital pink ribbon, a virtual badge to print or share through your social networks to honour or remember loved ones affected by breast cancer.

Help With Hygiene Kits For Men & Women In Need

To people who are unhoused, being able to shower, wash your hair, and brush your teeth can restore dignity. Providing someone with a hygiene kit could help them prepare for a job interview, or meeting with an employer. These kits also help provide preventive health care. For instance, providing a toothbrush can keep the mouth and gums healthy, especially when a person is unable to get professional dental care.

These goods, while small can make a huge impact in the life of someone in need. You can send a kit to a man, woman, or both who don’t have the resources themselves.
