Estrogen Dominance And Hormone Imbalance
Remember that estrogen isnt all bad. You need it! But our sex hormones dont exist alone in a bubble. The ratio of estrogen alongside other hormones like progesterone and testosterone can impact how estrogen acts in your body and how much of it you should have during different phases of life.
While estradiol rules your reproductive years, it should naturally drop after menopause. Women with higher estradiol in postmenopausal years appear to have an increased risk of breast cancer. This makes sense as our estrogen levels should naturally drop once we enter menopause.
But, due to lifestyle and environmental factors , women in their 40s and 50s can experience estrogen dominance even after going through menopause.
And while the risk of breast cancer tends to be higher for postmenopausal women, theres some indication that high estrogen levels can increase the risk of breast cancer diagnosis even before menopause. It is challenging to study this for women who still get their periods, though, since estrogen levels fluctuate so much during the month, so the studies arent as reliable.

Where Is Estrogen Made In Your Body
Endogenous estrogen production primarily occurs in your ovaries, but it can also be made by your fat cells. Estrogens are actually a group of hormones, not a single hormone:
- Estrone, produced mainly by fat cells and is the primary form after menopause.
- Estradiol, made in ovaries and is the primary form during your reproductive years.
- Estriol, the primary form during pregnancy.
The amounts and types of estrogen found in your body will vary during your menstrual cycle and throughout your life. These levels are influenced by external factors like your diet, medications, or endocrine disruptors .
All of these factors can contribute to hormone imbalances that show up with symptoms of estrogen dominance, and for some women, in turn, increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

Why Is This Study Important
Many people regularly drink coffee and tea. This study finds that these beverages are not harmful and may be linked to a lower risk of death after a breast cancer diagnosis. For breast cancer survivors who are concerned with how diet affects their chance of cancer returning, this study adds some clarity to one part of daily life.
Trig Increases Expression Of Er Target Genes

Finally, the previous data suggested that Trig is capable of modulating ER-mediated transcription. However, we wanted to demonstrate this effect in genomic DNA. Three genes were chosen because they are known downstream targets of ER . Trig enhanced gene expression of cyclin D1 , pS2 , and PGR similar to the enhancement with E2 treatment . In conjunction with previous data demonstrating that Trig can stimulate an ERE-reporter construct, these data suggest that Trig binds the ER, resulting in transcriptional activation by a mechanism similar to E2. In competitive binding assays, unlabeled E2 competed with the radiolabeled E2 in a dose-responsive manner in both ER and ER. However, at no tested concentration could Trig compete with the radiolabeled E2 in either ER subtype . Therefore, although it is clear that Trig activates the ER, resulting in enhanced ERE activity, it is unlikely that it does so by binding the ligand binding domain of the receptor.
Trig does not displace E2 in ER binding assays. Relative binding affinities were determined by competitive radiometric binding assays with 2 nmol/L E2 as tracer , -triene-3,17-diol, 70120 Ci/mmol. Binding affinities are expressed as RBA values, where the RBA of E2 is 100%. The determination of these RBA values is reproducible in separate experiments with a CV of 0.3 and the values shown represent the mean ± range of 2 or more separate determinations.

Coffee Consumption Modifies Risk Of Breast Cancer
In a new study, published in the journal Breast Cancer Research, a research group at Karolinska Institutet shows that drinking coffee may reduce the risk of so called ER-negative breast cancer in women.
The researchers compared lifestyle factors and coffee consumption between women with breast cancer and healthy age-matched women. They found that coffee drinkers had a lower incidence of breast cancer than women who rarely drank coffee. Furthermore, after adjusting the collected data to account for other influencing factors, such as menopause, exercise, weight, education and family history of breast cancer, the researchers found that the protective effect of coffee on breast cancer was only measurable for so called estrogen-receptor -negative breast cancer.
Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease and can be characterized on the basis of estrogen receptor expression in the tumour cells. ER-positive cancers are, in contrast to ER-negative cancers, dependant on estrogen for their growth. The two breast cancer subtypes are generally considered as biologically distinct diseases and have been associated with remarkably different gene expression profiles. ER status is important clinically, and is used both as a prognostic indicator and treatment predictor. The ER-positive cancers are more prevalent in older age groups and are normally treated with anti hormonal therapy, such as tamoxifen.
Ici Inhibits The Effects Of Trig
Next, we wanted to determine whether the physiological effects of Trig in MCF-7 cells were the result of estrogen receptor activation. First, we utilized an approach in which cells were cotreated with ICI, an ER antagonist . Treatment with 100 pmol/L E2 alone or 100 pmol/L Trig alone resulted in increased cell numbers compared with vehicle control-treated cells . However, cotreatment with 1 mol/L ICI and either E2 or Trig resulted in significantly reduced cell growth compared with treatment with E2 or Trig alone. In fact, final cell counts in the cotreatment groups did not significantly differ from the vehicle control group, suggesting that the growth-promoting effect of Trig is completely inhibited by blocking the ER.
ICI suppressed E2 and Trig induced cellular proliferation in MCF-7 cells. Cells were treated for 6 d with 100 pmol/L E2, 100 pmol/L Trig, 100 pmol/L E2 + 1 mol/L ICI, or 100 pmol/L Trig + 1 mol/L ICI. These data are from 3 separate experiments. Values are means ± SEM, n = 9 wells. Bars without a common letter differ, P< 0.001.

The Bottom Line: Does Caffeine Mess With Your Hormones
Maybe. The link between caffeine and hormones is a very complex one. Its hard to give advice on whether to drink or abstain. There are studies suggesting caffeine may aid in preventing diabetes, unwanted weight gain , and breast cancer. There have also been studies suggesting caffeine may be detrimental to health.
I advise pregnant women to avoid caffeine mostly because we try to limit what we expose a growing fetus to, Dr. Oki says. In general, for those who drink coffee, rather than trying to figure out what its doing to their body, its worth trying to figure out why they are drinking the coffee in the first place. If you are using it to compensate for poor sleeping habits or poor dietary habits, those are more likely to cause you harm in the long term.
Maintaining a healthy diet, exercise regimen, and sleep routine while drinking coffee in moderationone to two cups a dayis likely best. Its also smart to pay attention to what youre adding to your coffee. Cream and sugar introduce a lot of calories, which can have negative effects on your body. If you have a health condition or are experiencing unexplained symptoms after drinking coffee, consult with your provider.
Phytoestrogens And Soy: The Debate
Phytoestrogens are compounds that have a mild estrogenic effect and are found in whole grains, nuts and seeds, and many other botanicals, fruits and vegetables. These foods are associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer as well as reduced cancer reoccurrence.
The controversy becomes heated in the debate over soy-containing foods. This issue is complex, with some studies showing that eating soy early in life can reduce breast cancer risk. On the other hand, the consumption of concentrated soy extracts showed increased proliferation of breast cancer cells. Finally, other studies show a protective or neutral effect from whole soy foods.
My recommendation for soy is to eat whole soy foods in moderation no more than several servings per week, preferably fermented soy foods such as miso or tempeh. Avoid soy protein isolates and supplements containing concentrated soy isoflavones.

Estrogen, a hormone that females naturally produce, can be associated with breast cancer. Both women and men can be exposed to other types of estrogen from external sources, such as food, medications, or chemical toxins. This can include synthetic estrogens, plant-based estrogens, and xenoestrogens.
Each estrogen type may impact breast cancer differently. Research continues to explore the associations between estrogen and breast cancer.
This article will review different kinds of estrogens and their associations with breast cancer risk. Knowing more about estrogen and its role in breast cancer risk can help you talk with your doctor about hormone-related decisions.

Coffee Protects Against Type Of Breast Cancer
Coffee may do more than give a caffeine boost it could also reduce the risk of developing a particular kind of breast cancer, according to a new study.
Women who drink five or more cups of coffee a day are 57 percent less likely to develop estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer than women who drink less than a cup of coffee a day, said study researcher Jingmei Li, of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
“Breast cancer is not just one disease rather, it is made up of several biologically distinct subtypes,” Li told MyHealthNewsDaily. “Coffee contains compounds that may differentially affect breast cancer of different estrogen receptor subtypes.”
Estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer is just one kind of breast cancer and is characterized by its lack of estrogen receptors, meaning its growth is not governed by estrogen. Other kinds include HER2-positive breast cancer, where the cancer cells produce too much of a protein called HER2/neu, and the aggressive and rare triple negative breast cancer , which lacks receptors to the hormones and proteins common in other breast cancers.
The study was published yesterday in the journal Breast Cancer Research.
Looking at the data
Researchers collected health information from 2,818 women with breast cancer and 3,111 women without breast cancer who were between the ages of 50 and 74 and lived in Sweden.

Coffee May Decrease Risk Of Skin Cancer
Coffee drinkers are less likely to develop basal cell skin cancers and malignant melanoma, and their risk decreases with every cup they drink.2 Coffee has long been associated with a reduction in the risk of various cancers however the current study is the first to show a reduction in the risk of melanoma.2-8
In a study run by the U.S. National Institutes of Health and AARP a food questionnaire was sent to 3.5 million AARP members living in California, Florida, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Atlanta and Detroit.
According to findings of the study which were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, people who drank the most coffee every day enjoyed a lower risk of melanoma, compared with those who drank little to no coffee.
People who drank one to three cups a day had about a 10 percent decreased risk of melanoma compared with those who drank none at all, while those who drank four or more cups had a 20 percent decreased risk.
It is important to understand that the study only uncovered an association between coffee consumption and the risk of developing melanoma risk it doesnt prove a true cause and effect relationship but is certainly intriguing.
Some previous research has shown that coffee drinking may be protective against other skin cancer, apparently by mitigating the damage to skin cells caused by the suns ultraviolet rays.6

Caffeine Caffeic Acid Reduces Cell Division And Increases Cell Death
Next, the researchers analyzed the effects of two substances present in coffee caffeine and caffeic acid on breast cancer cells.
The team found that both of these compounds particularly caffeine reduced cell division and increased cell death among both ER+ and estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer cells. When tamoxifen was applied, the effect was even stronger.
This shows that these substances have an effect on the breast cancer cells and turn off signaling pathways that the cancer cells require to grow, say Rosendahl and Jernström.
The researchers add:
The clinical and experimental findings demonstrate various anticancer properties of caffeine and caffeic acid against both ER+ and ER- breast cancer that may sensitize tumor cells to tamoxifen and reduce breast cancer growth.
The team stresses, however, that breast cancer patients should not swap their medication for coffee. But if you like coffee and are also taking tamoxifen, add Rosendahl and Jernström, there is no reason to stop drinking it. Just two cups a day is sufficient to make a difference.
Last month, Medical News Today reported on a study claiming just one cup of coffee a day could significantly reduce the risk of liver cancer, while another study found consuming five cups a day could reduce the risk of heart attack.

Caffeinated Coffee May Reduce The Risk Of Cancers Of The Oral Cavity
Head and neck cancers originate in the tissues in or around the mouth, nose, and throat. Risk factors for head and neck cancer include smoking, alcohol consumption, and infection with high-risk types of human papilloma virus .
To evaluate the relationship between coffee and tea consumption and risk of head and neck cancer, researchers combined information from previous studies. These studies included a total of 5,139 people with cancer and 9,028 people without cancer.
- Compared with people who didnt drink coffee, people who drank four or more cups of caffeinated coffee per day were 39% less likely to have cancer of the oral cavity or pharynx. Caffeinated coffee did not affect risk of laryngeal cancer.
- Consumption of decaffeinated coffee was less common, and the effects on head and neck cancer risk remain uncertain.
- Tea intake did not affect risk of head and neck cancer.
These results do not conclusively prove that coffee reduces the risk of head and neck cancer. Factors other than coffee intake could explain the difference in cancer risk. Nevertheless, if confirmed, these results suggest that coffee may provide a benefit.10
