The Last Thing He Wanted: Stream It Or Skip It
The Gist: El Salvador. 1982. The jungle. Not a place most people want to be, but Elena McMahon is there anyway. Shes an intrepid reporter for the Atlantic Post a fictional riff on the Washington Post who thinks shes really embedded deep. Her skin is ruddy, theres dirt under her fingernails, bullets occasionally whiz by her head. Glamorous? No way. But boy, waitll the second act, when she gets really really embedded. Anyway, gunfire chatters as she and photog pal Alma barely hop a plane home with big scoops on atrocities occurring during the Salvadoran Civil War.
Its almost as crappy back in D.C., where she has to ask doughy white elephant senators male, of course about elephants in rooms as they stand in front of banners bearing elephant logos. But politics being politics, shes nudged away from an expose because bottom line something something, and ends up stuck on the Ronald Reagan reelection campaign trail, which she considers to be hell, because duh, thats exactly what it is, although she keeps her sanity by snooping a lead on shady weapons deals.
What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Another Hathaway debacle, 2019s Serenity, comes to mind it too featured a good director steering an unwieldy ship into an iceberg.
