Triple Negative Breast Cancer Treatment

is considered the holy grail in breast cancer because we dont have the magic bullet as we do with other breast cancers, says Dr. Mendez. That makes TNBC a lot more difficult to treat. Besides the fact that researchers havent identified the right therapies, this kind of tumor couldbe more biologically aggressive, she adds.

That said, catching it early is the goal. TRBC has a higher likelihood of metastasis , and therefore has a poorer outcome, says El Ashry.

Current treatment options for TNBC include surgery , chemotherapy, and radiation, says Dr. Mendez. Unfortunately, the downside of using chemo to treat TNBC is that the cancer becomes resistant to chemo quicker than it does with other types of breast cancer, adds El Ashry.

Don’t Miss: What Are The Symptoms Of Stage 1 Breast Cancer

What Is Triple Negative Breast Cancer

There are different types of breast cancer, and triple negative is one of them. Fifteen percent of breast cancers are triple negative,, surgical oncologist and chief of breast surgery at Miami Cancer Institute, tells Health. The name refers to the tumor itself. When we analyze tissue, we can check for three receptors at the membrane of cancer cells to see which type of breast cancer the patient has, she says.

These three receptors doctors check are for the hormones estrogen and progesterone, plus a protein called human epidermal growth factorwhich is more commonly known as HER2, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

Identifying these receptors is key, because it tells doctors which targeted therapies will be most effective in eradicating the cancer cells. However, the cancerous tumor or tumors in women who have been diagnosed with TNBC don’t have any of these receptors. That means there are far fewer options for targeted treatment.

When triple negative was first identified as a specific subtype, it was thought to be one disease lacking these three receptors. But with time and research, there has been an appreciation that within each subtype there are more sub-subtypes, Dorraya El-Ashry, PhD, chief scientific officer of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation , tells Health. The future of TNBC is learning more about the biology of each subtype and using that info to better tailor treatmentand save more lives.

How Does Diet Affect Triple

While countless research studies have been done to examine diet and breast cancer as a whole, researchers are just beginning to explore how low-fat, and low-animal-protein diets may discourage growth specifically in triple-negative breast cancer cells. Definitive results are not available yet. Currently, doctors recommend a healthy diet, high in vegetables, fruits, chicken, fish, and whole grains, and low in red meats, refined sugar, and processed meats. This lean and plant-based diet has been shown in research to reduce the risk of all breast cancers and many chronic diseases to boot.

Navitoclax Resistance Signature In The The Cancer Genome Atlas Human Samples

Top 10 Amazing Celebrities Who Have or Had Breast Cancer | Rita Wilson

Using the gene expression data of 1096 breast cancer patients from TCGA, we calculated values of our 18-gene resistance signature for each patient and analyzed the signature within HR+/HER2â and TNBC subtypes. The distributions of signature scores were overlapping in the two subtypes and covered a broad range of values. We hypothesize that cancers with high scores would be more resistant to navitoclax. On average TNBC had higher scores than HR+/HER2â cancers, suggesting that many TNBC patients might not be sensitive to navitoclax. In the absence of gene expression data of breast cancer patients treated with navitoclax, we cannot directly assess the association between our signature and response, but this could be tested as soon as such data become available.

What Is The Treatment For Triple

Because triple-negative breast cancer does not have receptors for estrogen, progesterone, or HER2, treatment options are more limited than for other breast cancer types. HER2 drugs and hormone therapy are not options for TNBC patients.

For women whose triple-negative cancer has not spread to other parts of the body, breast cancer surgeries like mastectomies and lumpectomies are usually the first treatment option. TNBC is often treated with chemotherapy in conjunction with surgery to either shrink the tumor beforehand, or prevent cancer from returning afterwards. Radiation therapy may also be used.

Doherty Leans On Her Best Friend Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar

Doherty has been spending a lot of quarantine with her best friend, actress Sarah Michelle Gellar. The two of them are part of a series of cooking ads for Kroger and they also hang out, drinking margaritas and practicing their alcohol-related circus tricks.

In October, which is breast cancer awareness month, Gellar interviewed Doherty about her breast cancer battle for Entertainment Tonight. While Dohertys initial reaction to her stage 4 diagnosis was one of shock, by October 2020 she had moved on to just being able to live with it.

I love it when people say, were praying for you, and everything else, but there comes a point when youre like, I got this. Im fine. Im good. There are a lot of people in the world who could use prayers, and Im feeling great. I have an amazing medical team behind me and I have a few OK friends and stuff, Doherty told Gellar with a grin. Im doing OK. Im doing better than OK. Im doing well. I feel strong and healthy and confident and happy.

During the interview, Doherty revealed that when she received her diagnosis, she had to inform her closest friends, so she had them over for dinner to tell them what was going on. Gellar said that the whole experience has taught her to not afraid to ask questions.

Can Researchers Outsmart Breast Cancer Recurrence And Metastasis

Céline Dion Debuts Powerful Song as Hollywood Comes ...

Anyone who has been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and successfully gone through treatment is at risk of recurrence, the discovery of breast cancer in other parts of the body.

While we dont know how many people will have a recurrence, we do know that about 94 percent of people with stage IV, or metastatic breast cancer, were previously diagnosed with an early stage breast cancer that later recurred. The risk varies from person to person and can happen at any time.

The risk of recurrence depends on the biology of the tumor , the stage at the time of the original diagnosis and the treatments for the original cancer. Its important to note, a person can do everything right and still have a recurrence its nobodys fault and no one did anything to cause the recurrence.

Actresses Shannen Doherty and Olivia Newton-John recently announced their breast cancer recurred and is now stage IV or metastatic breast cancer, the most advanced form of the disease. That means it has spread beyond the breast and into other parts of the body. Metastatic breast cancer can be treated, but not cured, and treatment focuses on extending life as well as maintaining quality of life. Their unfortunate news reminds us that while we have come a long way in understanding breast cancer and developing treatments for it, we still do not understand what causes it to recur and how we can stop recurrence from happening.
