Do Cell Phones Cause Breast Cancer

What You Can Do To Lessen Your Risk

Do Cell Phones Cause Breast Cancer?

What should you do if you want or need to wear your cell phone for some reason? Simply put it on airplane mode. Then you will not receive any radiation. Should you wish to make a call or check your messages, switch the phone back on and youre back in communication! When you have landed at your destination, place your phone on a surface that is a few inches away from your body.

At this time this is considered the safest use of cell phones.

Reducing your risk of cancer beyond safe cell phone use should include:

Maintaining or achieving a normal body weight. Excess fat, especially around the midsection, is particularly dangerous and toxic to the body.

Avoiding artificial ingredients, hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, preservatives, and GMO foods.

Avoiding simple carbohydrates in the form of refined grains and sugar.

Consuming 9 servings or organics fruits and vegetables each day. At least 5 of the 9 should be vegetables.

Discovering if you have any food sensitivities gluten and dairy are the most common.

Discovering if you have any hidden infections. A lab test can determine this.

Exercising 30 minutes per day, at least 5 times per week. Get a heart rate monitor and keep your pulse rate at 180 minus your age.

If you are taking any medications, work with a clinician who can get to the root cause of the problem, correct it, and hopefully wean you off the medication safely.

Sound simple? It turns out that it is.

What Do The Experts Say

In 2015, a group of 250 scientists signed a petition to the United Nations and the World Health Organization communicating their serious concern about the health risks related to the electromagnetic fields that are released by wireless devices. The scientists pointed to data showing electromagnetic fields generated by cell phones, wi-fi and baby monitors may impact human health. Their petition noted that children may be more susceptible to the negative effects of electromagnetic fields than adults. Cancer, structural and functional changes to the reproductive system, neurological disorders, and learning and memory deficits are among the potential harms associated with electromagnetic fields, the scientists wrote.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified electromagnetic fields, especially from cell phones, as possibly carcinogenic. Noting that there could be some risk, the IARC concluded in 2011 that we need to keep a close watch for a link between cell phones and cancer risk.” IARC Director Christopher Wild, PhD, called for additional research on the long-term, heavy use of mobile phones and recommended the use of pragmatic measures to reduce exposure such as hands-free devices or texting.

What Are The Findings From Studies Of The Human Body

Researchers have carried out several kinds of studies to investigate possible effects of cell phone use on the human body. In 2011, two small studies were published that examined brain glucose metabolism in people after they had used cell phones. The results were inconsistent. One study showed increased glucose metabolism in the region of the brain close to the antenna compared with tissues on the opposite side of the brain the other study found reduced glucose metabolism on the side of the brain where the phone was used.

The authors of these studies noted that the results were preliminary and that possible health outcomes from changes in glucose metabolism in humans were unknown. Such inconsistent findings are not uncommon in experimental studies of the physiological effects of radiofrequencyelectromagnetic radiation in people . Some factors that can contribute to inconsistencies across such studies include assumptions used to estimate doses, failure to consider temperature effects, and investigators not being blinded to exposure status.

Another study investigated blood flow in the brain of people exposed to radiofrequency radiation from cell phones and found no evidence of an effect on blood flow in the brain .

Lab Studies Of Rf Waves

As noted above, the RF waves given off by cell phones dont have enough energy to damage DNA directly or to heat body tissues. Because of this, its not clear how cell phones might be able to cause cancer. Some studies have found possible increased rates of certain types of tumors in lab animals exposed to RF radiation, but overall, the results of these types of studies have not provided clear answers so far.

Large studies published in 2018 by the US National Toxicology Program and by the Ramazzini Institute in Italy exposed groups of lab rats to RF waves over their entire bodies for many hours a day, starting before birth and continuing for most or all of their natural lives. Both studies found an increased risk of uncommon heart tumors called malignant schwannomas in male rats, but not in female rats . The NTP study also reported possible increased risks of certain types of tumors in the brain and in the adrenal glands.

While both of these studies had strengths, they also had limitations that make it hard to know how they might apply to humans being exposed to RF waves from cell phones. A 2019 review of these two studies by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection determined that the limitations of the studies didnt allow conclusions to be drawn regarding the ability of RF energy to cause cancer.

Still, the results of these studies do not rule out the possibility that RF waves from cell phones might somehow impact human health.

The Importance Of Study Design For Research On Abortion And Breast Cancer Risk

Cells Phone Radiation & Brain Tumors: Shocking Research ...

Some case-control studies have suggested abortion may be linked to an increased risk of breast cancer . However, the design of case-control studies makes the accuracy of their results questionable.

Case-control studies rely on the reporting of past behavior. When it comes to a sensitive subject like abortion, this can have a big impact on the information gathered.

The cases in these studies may be more likely to give complete information about their abortion history than the controls . The controls may not be as comfortable sharing this personal information as the women diagnosed with breast cancer who are interested in whether personal health history is related to breast cancer. Such differences in reporting can bias study results.

Prospective cohort studies are much more likely to give accurate results on topics such as abortion. These studies gather sensitive information before women are diagnosed with breast cancer. This helps limit biased reporting.

Cohort studies show abortion isnt linked to breast cancer risk .

Cell Phones Cause Brain Tumors: Legal Precedent

Reports like the UK study mentioned above continue to support the existence of a strong link between cell phones and brain cancer. And major health organisations are taking note.

The World Health Organization, for example, classified radio frequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans back in 2011.

What that means is they found some evidence of increase in glioma and acoustic neuroma brain cancer for mobile phone users, but have not been able to draw conclusions for other types of cancers, CNN reported at the time.

So why is there still debate surrounding the link?

Establishing a clear and indisputable connection between cell phones and cancer remains a difficult task. As one recent report notes, there are many methodological barriers to designing accurate studies. Largely due to the fact that EMFs are imperceptible, ubiquitous, have multiple sources, and can vary greatly over time and short distances.

But, as time passes, these links are becoming more obvious and the causal link between cell phones and brain tumors is now legal precedent, affirmed by two separate courts.

As the Daily Mail reported in 2017:

A man has been awarded monthly social security payments after a court found that his brain tumor was caused by a company-issued cellphone it was the first trial court verdict in the world to recognize a link between cellphone use and the development of brain tumor.

Whats The Difference Ionizing And Non

Wireless technologies use forms electromagnetic waves to carry signals from one place to another. Electromagnetic waves are forms of radiation that come in two main forms: ionizing and non-ionizing.

Non-ionizingradiation is generally considered harmless to humans. Examples of non-ionizing radiation include radio waves that transmit sound and visuals to a radio or television, or when you use the remote control to change the channel on your television. Microwaves and infrared radiation are considered non-ionizing. Cell phones release low levels of a type of non-ionizing radiation called radiofrequency energy.

Ionizing radiation is described by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences as mid- to high-frequency radiation that can, under some circumstances, lead to DNA or cell damage after extended exposure. Examples of ionizing radiation include specific types of ultraviolet light, X-rays and gamma rays.

Causal Link Borne Out In Multiple Studies

A 2011 review of the research published on the health outcomes of long-term exposure to low-intensity microwave radiation noted demonstrable carcinogenic effects. These typically manifested after extended exposure of 10 years or more.

Notably, these low levels of MW radiation in the study are well within the ICNIRP safety standards.

On the specific question of radiation from cell towers, this review noted that even one year of exposure led to a dramatic increase in cancers in nearby residents. One study compared cancer cases among people living up to 400 meters from a base transmitting station and people living further away. After ten years, the group close to the base station had over three times the rate of cancer relative to those living at a greater distance.

Similar findings were reported in Brazil in 2011. In this study, the greatest accumulated cancer incidence was among those exposed to power density as high as 40.78 µW/cm2 was 5.83 per 1000. In contrast, those further away who were exposed to power density 0.04 µW/cm2 , had a notably lower cancer incidence of 2.05 per 1000.

These studies, and others like them, indicate that towers are a significant component in the risks associated with cell phones.

No Carrying Your Cell Phone In Your Bra Will Not Cause Breast Cancer No Matter What Dr Oz Says

Verify: Does putting a cell phone in your bra cause breast cancer?

I dont think very highly of Dr. Oz.

This time around, Dr. Oz caught my attention about a week and a half ago. I had planned on blogging about it last week, but thecase of the Amish girl with cancer whose parents stopped her chemotherapy after less than two full courses, thus endangering her life, intervened. I figured that I probably wouldnt get back to Oz, butwouldnt you know it?a week later Im still annoyed at this story. So better late than never.

There was none of that at all. Zero. Nada. Zip. In fact, I was shocked at how evidence-free this whole segment was. Usually Oz at least tries to slather a patina of scientific evidence on his pseudoscience. OK, maybe not usually, but he does at least sometimes try when hes not doing a story on alternative medicine, complementary and alternative medicine, or integrative medicine, anyway. Not here. Its as if Dr. Ozs producers werent even trying for this one.

Dr. Oz then points to an image on a screen in the studio, repeating how he understands how convenient bras are to carry things, but then goes on to warn that he never wants you to do this again. A breast surgeon like myself can recognize the image immediately as a breast ultrasound, with a mass in it. The mass is darker than the surrounding tissue and irregular. It looks suspicious, and it is suspicious, because Oz tells us that its breast cancer, which is never convenient.

Factors That Do Not Increase Breast Cancer Risk

Many factors have been studied to see whether or not they increase the risk of breast cancer.

Some of these factors have been proven to be unrelated to breast cancer and dont increase risk. Some may even decrease risk .

A full list of factors that dont increase breast cancer risk is too long to present here. Some, however, deserve mention because theyve been studied more than most or theyve gotten a lot of media attention.

Our Breast Cancer Risk Factors Table compares these and other factors by level of risk and strength of evidence.

The factors below are listed alphabetically.

Research clearly shows no link between abortion and the risk of breast cancer .

Since 2003, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the National Cancer Institute have agreed the scientific evidence does not support a link between abortion and breast cancer . The ACOG reaffirmed its conclusion in 2019 that theres no link between abortion and breast cancer .

Origin Of The Controversy

Over the past 20 years, mobile phone use has become an everyday part of many people’s lives. Mobile phones are low-powered radio devices that transmit and receive microwave radiation. They operate at frequencies between 450 and 2,700 MHz with peak powers in the range of 0.1 to 2 watts.1 Concerns have been raised that mobile phones cause cancer – specifically brain tumours, as they are held close to the head when they are used.

There is clear evidence that high-energy radiation – such as x-rays, and -rays – cause cancer, genetic defects and weaken our immune system. So it is only natural that the media and public would also be wary of low-energy radiation such as extremely-low-frequency radiation , radiofrequency radiation and microwaves. As a result, mobile phones and their base stations, as well as power lines, are major areas of public concern.2

In 2019, there was renewed interest in this topic following an announcement that 5G technology would be rolled out.

Young Women Breast Cancer Statistics

Doctors agree they are seeing more breast cancer cases in younger women than they have in the last forty years. Many young women diagnosed with cancerous tumors where astonished when they realized that the tumor was in the same place they carried their phones. In fact for some women the cancer was the exact size and shape of their cellphone they carried in their bras for years. Yet despite stories like these, many women continue to carry cell phones in their bras and the practice is becoming even more popular. In fact bra manufactures are producing bras dubbed the pocket bra with specially designed storage pockets to hold small items including cell phones.

Mobile Phones And Cancer

Do Cellphones Cause Cancer?: Understanding Cell Phone ...

Mobile phones emit nonionizing electromagnetic fields within the mid-frequency range of 1.9 and 2.2 GHz.1There has been concern that mobile phone use may increase the risk of cancer because EMFs may be absorbed by tissues, and the use of mobile phones is rapidly increasing.2

Although the World Health Organizations International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies radiofrequency fields, including those emitted by mobile phones, as Group 2B possibly carcinogenic to humans the data regarding the risk of cancer remain uncertain and controversial.3Interpretations of the current data vary according to the organization or agency, with many US agencies stating either the data are not conclusive or no causal link has been established between mobile phone use and cancer.2To further, and hopefully more definitively, determine whether there is an increased risk of cancer with mobile phone or other wireless technology use, the large, prospective cohort study COSMOS is following nearly 300,000 adults for 20 to 30 years.4Similarly, the MOBI-Kids study is assessing the effect of EMF exposure on children and adolescents.5

Do Cell Phones Emit Radiation

Yes, both mobile phones and WiFi emitting devices generate whats called non-ionizing radiation.

Ionizing means there is enough energy for electrons to be freed from atoms or molecules when the radiation hits it . The difference with non-ionizing radiation is that there is not enough energy to do that.

Thats a good thing. Were not talking the type of radiation you get from a nuclear bomb.

Its the higher frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum like X rays and gamma rays which are ionizing to just about every type of material . Cell phones are way lower.

different atoms and molecules will ionize at different energies

For that reason, the exact spectrum at which radiation becomes ionizing vs. non-ionizing is not always a black and white answer, at least in the broadest sense if youre talking about all types of matter.

Since theyre so close, why arent there any health scares about AM or FM radio causing cancer? Because your car radio is only receiving the signal, its not transmitting. The purported health dangers happen at the source of where radio waves are transmitted.

Cell phones and WiFi devices receive AND transmit.

If every person had a FM transmitter which could broadcast a signal for miles, this same conversation would be happening with those, too. But as consumers, we only receive AM/FM/SiriusXM satellite radio signals and are not broadcasting any. Since theyre only receivers were using, theyre perfectly safe.

Harmful effects of mobile phones

Keeping Cell Phone In Bra

Researchers revealed the results of a recent survey are they are astounding. As many as 40 percent of females in college environments place their cell phone in their bra and as many as 3% indicate they carry their cell phone in their bras for more than 10 hours per day. Many surgeons agree that women should stop storing cell phones next to their breasts because this practice could cause cancer. With cell phone technology still being relatively new, the truth of the matter is that evidence from long-term studies is not available and wont be for many years.

Myth: The Radiation From Cell Phones Causes Breast Cancer

No.Most research done so far has not shown a link between cellphone use and cancer.

While its important that we all exercise caution around exposure to toxins and known carcinogens in our environment its also important that we keep complicated information/issues from being misinterpreted and spread as frightening rumours.

With the rise of cellphone use, the media and parents have been concerned about the negative effects of cellphone. Perhaps, breast cancer just got grouped into it. However, according to the American Cancer Society, the radiofrequency waves produced by cellphones are non-ionizing, meaning they cannot produce enough energy to directly damage the DNA inside cells. Types of ionizing forms of radiation include: x-rays, gamma rays, and ultraviolet rays.

The well-known Interphone Study, conducted by the World Health Organization, in 13 different countries, was the largest study investigating any potential link between cellphone use and cancerous tumours. The WHO concluded that, although more research is still needed, there is currently no connection between cellphone use and cancer.
