After surgery, patients should continue to examine their breasts on a monthly basis, and if they notice something different they should get it evaluated by a physician, Smith said.
In addition, patients with silicon-filled implants should regularly have an MRI or ultrasound to screen for an asymptomatic rupture of the implants.
Many women are satisfied with their implants, said Smith. But its still crucial to be aware of any signs or symptoms that an implant-related problem may exist.

Who May Be At Risk Of Developing Breast Implant Illness
Some doctors who have treated many patients with BII say theyve found that it is more likely to occur in people who have a personal or family history of autoimmune conditions, allergies, and conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, chronic fatigue, or fibromyalgia. But some women who develop BII dont have any of these risk factors. Theres no evidence that a history of breast cancer or any other cancer makes you more likely to develop BII.

: FDA Recommends New Labeling Guidelines For Breast Implants
Despite emotional testimony from women who say their breast implants made them sick with cancer or autoimmune symptoms, the Food and Drug Administration has no plans to ban the textured implants that are being blamed.
At a March 25 hearing, an FDA panel supported better product labeling and informed consent about the potential dangers of the devices, including a new, breast implant-related cancer and an autoimmune syndrome education of women who already have implants about the signs of the cancer so that they and their doctors can detect it early and an enhanced national registry of women with implants, which would allow tracking of specific device types to see if they are tied to the illnesses. A representative of the Plastic Surgery Foundation said it is working to establish such a registry.
The panel also agreed that more research needs to be regarding how breast implants can play a role in the development of cancer and autoimmune conditions. Josef Zundorf, M.D., of the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices, testified that an international consortium will prepare research proposals on these topics to be considered in the second half of this year.

As for other kinds of textured implantswhich, again, are already very rare in the United Statesthe tiny but real risk of developing BIA-ALCL may well factor into that decision.
Going forward, this will definitely be an important part of the conversation have with their surgeons when deciding what type of implants to get, Dr. Clemens says.

Should My Implants Be Removed Even Though I Have No Symptoms
Medical experts do not recommend removing your breast implants if you do not have symptoms of BIA ALCL, even if your implants are no longer supplied in Australia. This is because BIA ALCL is a rare cancer with excellent cure rates if it is detected early.
The risk of developing BIA ALCL is lower than the risks associated with an anaesthetic and surgery. The complication rate of revision surgery involving implant removal or replacement is also higher with each revision procedure.
Generally, breast implants are not lifetime devices, regardless of breast implant associated cancer. Typically they are removed after 10-15 years. The longer you have the implant, the more likely it will need to be removed. Common reasons for removal are contracture or movement of the implant.
Breast implant associated cancer is rare, but the risk is higher with certain types of breast implants. If you do not remember whether your implants are smooth or textured, or what brand they are, your surgeon or the clinic that holds your operation record should be able to advise you on these details.
It is best to discuss with your surgeon what they would recommend in their clinical opinion given the type of implant you have and the benefits versus risks of removal of implants in a healthy person with no symptoms. You can also discuss a plan for regular check ups. You can seek a second opinion to help you decide on options, or if you are unsure or concerned about the advice you receive from your surgeon.

What You Need To Know About Breast Implants
In 2019, fewer than 300,000 women and teenagers underwent surgery to have their breasts enlarged with silicone or saline implants, a 4% decrease compared to 2018. In addition, more than 100,000 breast cancer patients had reconstruction after mastectomy in 2019, often with implants.1 While the popularity of breast augmentation has tripled since 1997, when there were just over 101,000 of these procedure,2 recent trends show that fewer women are opting for augmentation.
There were also 54,539 implant removal procedures in 2019, including augmentation and reconstruction patients, compared to 48,385 in 2018 and 47,000 removals in 20171 The increasing number of women removing their implants can be attributed to several factors, including news stories highlighting the risks of breast implants, the growing mass media and social media presence of patient advocates, Allergans recall of their BIOCELL textured breast implants in 2019 and efforts to notify women of the recall, and several insurance companies expanding their coverage to include women whose textured implants were recalled.
However, debate continues to swirl about the safety of breast implants. Here are the facts about what is known and not known about the risks of breast implants.
Breast Implants Can Cause Rare Form Of Cancer Fda Says
Breast implants can cause a rare form of cancer that may have killed at least nine people, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday.
The cancer is called anaplastic large cell lymphoma and the FDA is checking into more than 350 reports linking it with both silicone and saline breast implants.
All of the information to date suggests that women with breast implants have a very low but increased risk of developing ALCL compared to women who do not have breast implants, the FDA said in a statement.
Breast augmentation is the second most popular cosmetic procedure among women, after liposuction. More than 300,000 procedures were performed in 2015. So the cancer would be very rare even with 300 cases over 10 years or longer.
And the FDA says it is easily treated if caught early enough.
Most cases of breast implant-associated ALCL are treated by removal of the implant and the capsule surrounding the implant and some cases have been treated by chemotherapy and radiation,” it said.
Suspicions have been growing that implants might cause ALCL, which is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.The FDA first started looking into the possibility in 2011.
At that time, the FDA knew of so few cases of this disease that it was not possible to determine what factors increased the risk, the agency said.
But now theres more information, including hundreds of complaints and a World Health Organization report pointing to breast implants as a possible cause.

Emerging Form Of Breast Implant
Individuals with breast implants are also at risk of developing breast implant large cell lymphoma, or BIA-ALCL. BIA-ALCL is not breast cancer but a form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system.
In most cases BIA-ALCL is found in fluid and scar tissue near the implant, however there are cases where it spreads throughout the body.
The FDA states, At this time, most data suggest that BIA-ALCL occurs more frequently following implantation of breast implants with textured surfaces rather than those with smooth surfaces.
Plastic surgeons have identified 615 cases of BIA-ALCL worldwide with the disease occurring at higher rates among women with textured implants. French authorities have recommended against the use of textured implants due to the cancer risk.
At present, however, the risks are difficult to determine due to significant limitations in world-wide reporting and lack of data.

Textured Breast Implants Recalled For Cancer Risk
July 24, 2019 — Pharmaceutical giant Allergan has ordered the recall of all of its BIOCELL textured breast implants after the FDA flagged a series of reports that the implants were causing cancer in hundreds of patients worldwide.
The FDA says the textured surface, unique to Allerganâs implants, are tied to 481 cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma , a type of non-Hodgkinâs lymphoma. There have been 573 cases of BIA-ALCL worldwide, including 33 deaths. In 13 cases where a patient died and the manufacturer of the breast implant was known, 12 of them involved an Allergan breast implant.
Most cases of this particular cancer, which attacks the immune system, are not diagnosed for years after the original implantation.
Daniel Maman, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon with 740 Park Plastic Surgery in New York City, says it remains unclear why these types of implants could cause cancer.
âBut these rare cases are showing that the texture of the shell surrounding the implant can cause this lymphoma response in capsule tissue that surrounds the breast implant,â he says.
The FDA says anyone with an Allergan BIOCELL implant should not have it removed, unless symptoms are present. Those symptoms include persistent swelling or pain near the implant. Patients found to have BIA-ALCL would have the implants removed, along with surrounding scar tissue.

Outcomes After Implant Removal To Treat Breast Implant Illness
There isnt much research on outcomes after implant removal surgery for BII. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, a small study of 100 patients with self-reported BII in one surgeons practice showed that 89% of patients who had implant removal and capsulectomy experienced improvement in some of their symptoms within 3 months of surgery.1 Symptoms that improved included fatigue, cognitive problems, burning pain in the chest wall and breast, dry eyes, anxiety, and joint pain. Another study published by researchers in the Netherlands in 2013 looked at 80 women with silicone gel-filled implants and autoimmune symptoms.2 They found that symptoms improved in 69% of the women after implant removal surgery.
The plastic surgeons we spoke with said that many but not all of their patients have experienced an improvement in BII symptoms after removal of their implants.
Some doctors say that it can be particularly helpful after implant removal surgery for BII to eat a healthy diet, get regular exercise, and decrease stress. These steps may promote healing and decrease the inflammation in the body that can be associated with BII.

What A Breast Enlargement Involves
Breast implant surgery is carried out under general anaesthetic.
The operation involves:
- making a cut in the skin next to or below the breast
- positioning the implant either between your breast tissue and chest muscle, or behind your chest muscle
- stitching the incision and covering it with a dressing
The operation takes between 60 and 90 minutes.
You may be able to go home the same day, but may need to stay in hospital overnight if the operation was scheduled late in the day.
You’ll be given pain relief if you experience any discomfort afterwards.
Are Textured Breast Implants Banned
As of April 2019, the FDA has chosen not to blanket ban all textured breast implants because current data does not show that these devices meet the banning standards outlined by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Even though textured implants are still on the market, some plastic surgeons are opting not to place them until more is known, while others have chosen instead to stop placing the specific brands most associated with BIA-ALCL.
While the FDA has not removed all textured implants on the market, they are taking steps to protect patients. On July 24, 2019, breast implant manufacturer Allergan voluntarily recalled all of their BIOCELL textured implants at the request of the FDA, including:
- Natrelle Saline-Filled breast implants
- Natrelle Inspira Silicone-Filled breast implants
- Natrelle 410 Highly Cohesive Anatomically Shaped Silicone-Filled breast implants.
Review of incident reports of BIA-ALCL has indicated a much higher rate among patients who have or have had implants manufactured with the BIOCELL texturing process. Therefore, the move to take these implants off the market may be another step toward further minimizing incidences of BIA-ALCL.
If you currently have any of the aforementioned breast implants, the FDA does not recommend removal if you arent experiencing any symptoms, given the rarity of the disease. If you have concerns, please contact your primary care provider or plastic surgeon.
