Inflammatory Breast Cancer Survivor: Why I Chose Md Anderson For My Treatment

Fundraiser by Brian Dang : Breast Cancer Research Donation

I was 41 when I found out I had breast cancer.

One day, I was carting around two teenagers and a preschooler, running our small business, and doing my daily chores just living a normal, busy life. Then, I noticed a heaviness in my left breast, a kind of fullness Id always associated with nursing. A few weeks passed, but the sensation didnt go away. I scheduled a mammogram my first and only.

At the end of that appointment, my husband, Ty, and I sat in a small room together and heard a doctor utter the unthinkable: You have a large and very suspicious mass in your left breast, Mrs. Pattison. I believe you have cancer.

My breast cancer treatment

Once I got past the initial shock, my husband and I started making plans for treatment, near our home in Tennessee. I was initially diagnosed with stage IIIc invasive ductal carcinoma, due to significant lymph node involvement. So, my breast cancer treatment started with chemotherapy. Then I had a double mastectomy and a lymph node dissection on the left side.

I was supposed to start radiation therapy six weeks later. Id already had the simulation. And stickers had been placed on my chest and sides to guide the technicians.

But a few days before my first treatment, I noticed a pink rash developing along the scar line on my now flat chest. By the next morning, the rash had grown significantly, and I could feel clusters of hard bumps beneath the surface of my skin.

How I knew coming to MD Anderson was worth it

Hallelujah.

Be A Research Advocate

NCI encourages cancer patients, survivors, and family members to consider taking part in planning and communicating about cancer research. Research advocates bring the patient perspective to NCI and serve as a reminder of the need for research focused on patient benefits and outcomes. Advocates also support the dissemination of scientific advances that lead to new and better methods to prevent, detect, and treat cancer.

Examples of what an advocate role may be include:

  • taking part on a formal advisory board
  • working on NCI initiatives
  • sharing research findings with nonscientific audiences

There are many other ways to take part. The Office of Advocacy Relations has more information about research advocacy at NCI.

Private Organizations And Cancer Research Fund Raising

There are many private organizations in the United States that raise money for cancer research and treatment and provide other support activities. Some of these private organizations may refer to NCI and include the toll-free telephone number for NCIs Cancer Information Service in their fund-raising literature. However, NCI is not affiliated with any of these organizations and does not participate in or endorse their fund-raising activities.

The following questions can help you evaluate the operations of a fund-raising organization and make an informed decision about contributing to the organization:

  • Does the organization make its budget and a complete annual report, including an audit by an independent certified public accountant, public?
  • Are the groups fund raising and administrative costs reasonable?
  • Does the organization use ethical and economical fund-raising methods?
  • Is the organization transparent about how it is managed?
  • Is the information it distributes misleading, deceptive, or inaccurate?

Susan G Komen Awards Grant To Define And Advance Diagnosis Of Inflammatory Breast Cancer

Clinical Research Team Will Test Validity of First-of-its-Kind Diagnostic Tool

Susan G. Komen®, the worlds leading breast cancer organization, awarded a research grant to apply a new, first-of-its-kind tool that seeks to more accurately diagnose inflammatory breast cancer . The grant funds collaborative work being done at two of the largest IBC centers in the world The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

World-renowned breast cancer clinicians Filipa Lynce, MD, at Dana-Farber, and Wendy A. Woodward, MD, PhD, at MD Anderson, are building off findings from the Susan G. Komen-IBCRF IBC Collaborative, in partnership with the Milburn Foundation®, that were recently published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. The research teams work will involve the application of a scoring system to increase diagnostic accuracy, predict outcomes, guide treatment decisions and identify criteria for inclusion in clinical trials. The scoring system uses a set of common diagnostic criteria to differentiate between patients who definitely have IBC, have a strong possibility of IBC or have a weak possibility of IBC. Upon confirming the scoring systems accuracy, it could then be applied prospectively to patients.

How To Find Reputable Organizations

With so many options available, it can be challenging to determine which charities are going to make best use of your dollars.

In addition to making sure the organizations vision and mission are in line with your charitable goals, its crucial to make sure you know where your money is going and what percentage actually is used on program expenses.

Most reputable charities post relevant financial information on their websites. This includes annual reports and links to their Form 990, a document that provides the public with financial information about a nonprofit organization.

U.S. tax-exempt nonprofits are required to provide copies of the three most recently filed annual information returns and the organizations application for tax exemption.

Additionally, the IRS keeps a searchable list of organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions, with links to Form 990 returns.

Several online tools are available to make the task of evaluating multiple charities easier.

Charity Navigator is one of the most well-known charity evaluators and measures a charitys financial health and accountability and transparency. Its ratings show givers how efficiently it believes a charity will use their support, and how well it has sustained its programs and services over time.

  • Learn more about cancer. Help others by raising awareness and sharing what you know about coping with the disease. Or help people in their search for information as they look at the many websites and organizations that pertain to cancer. If youre a cancer survivor or loved one of a patient, you may be able to help people understand the health care system.
  • Volunteer. Cancer-related organizations include many different kinds of groups that help people with cancer. These groups may focus on areas such as service and support, fund raising, research, or policy matters. Many need the help of volunteers.
