Cathy Conroy Is One Of Those Albertans Hoping For A Better Way To Predict Who Will Benefit From Certain Therapies

Anonymous $25M donation to establish breast cancer research center at UNC

So far, no biomarkers have been clinically proven to predict sensitivity to chemotherapy. But Dr. Ing Swie Goping at the University of Alberta and Dr. John Mackey at the Cross Cancer Institute, are hoping to change that. Dr. Goping garnered attention in the world of cancer research when she discovered that a protein, called BAD for short, made cancer cells more sensitive to taxane chemotherapy. Her team believes that the higher the levels of BAD protein in the tumour, the better chance the patient has of responding favourably.

If she is right, it will mark the first predictive biomarker for taxane chemotherapy.

Top Women Wealth Advisors Donate $500000 To Breast Cancer Research

Liz and R.J. Shook ask Top Women Advisors to stand and be counted as charitable donors to Susan G. … Komen.

SHOOK Research

Top investment firms and wealth advisors pledged more than $500,000 toward development of a new blood test designed to make it easier to detect breast cancer sooner.

The donations were made at the Forbes-SHOOK Top Women Wealth Advisors Summit held in Palm Beach, Fla., May 23-25.

The fundraising effort was led by the Susan G. Komen foundation, SHOOK Research and Forbes, publisher of the Forbes-SHOOK top advisor rankings.

Breast cancer is a leading cause of death for U.S. women, exceeded only by heart disease, according to the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The survival rate from breast cancer is 90%, but the five-year survival rate for women for metastatic breast cancer is only 29%. In metastasis, cancer cells break apart from where they first formed and spread to other parts of the body, making the cancer very difficult to eradicate

The money pledged by top financial advisors in Palm Beach will help fund a liquid biopsy that detects cancer cells in the bloodstream. Detection and early treatment are viewed as essential to combating breast cancer. The Susan G. Komen foundation said it has funded more than 530 metastatic research projects and more than 50 clinical trials.

R.J. Shook, whose mother died of breast cancer when he was 17, told financial advisors an emotional story about losing his mother.

What Is The Best Breast Cancer Charity To Donate To

Where should I donate? is one of the most common questions Googled on the topic of breast cancer, but the answer is not simple. One big misconception is that all breast cancer charities are the same. Another misconception is that there is one large umbrella organization calling the shots.

In reality, there are several large national organizations that have built trust over many decades and impact the lives of millions. These are the organizations with the brands and names you may recognizeAmerican Cancer Society, Breastcancer.org, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, National Breast Cancer Foundation, Susan G. Komen Foundation, and Young Survival Coalition.

There are also many grassroots organizations that specifically focus on impacting their local communities. These smaller breast cancer charities may provide excellent support locally, but their brand recognition or impact may not extend beyond their community.

Each breast cancer organization has its own mission, visions, goals, and ideas about how to impact the lives of people affected by breast cancer. This is why research is crucial when youre making a donation.

When selecting a breast cancer charity to identify with or support, its important to choose one thats right for you and aligns with your goals, and maybe even your own personality.

Here are a few of the top breast cancer charities, what they do, and what makes them unique:

    Living Beyond Breast Cancer

Living Beyond Breast Cancer was founded in 1991 by Marisa C. Weiss, MD, a radiation oncologist, who started the charity from her home with the support of local volunteers.

Its initial mission was to provide information and support to women with breast cancer after completing breast cancer treatment. In recent years, LBBC has expanded that to help women across the complete spectrum of diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and survival. They also offer programs that support caregivers and healthcare professionals devoted to the care of those living with breast cancer.

In 2018, LBBC raised $5.8 million in funds to support the programs and services it offers.

You can donate to LBBC online or via mail. You can set up a charitable trust or bequest, become a corporate partner, or purchase LBBC goods from their online store.

LBBCs centerpiece fundraiser, called Reach & Raise, raises money through community-based yoga events around the country.

Although advances in early detection of breast and prostate cancer has improved survival rates, there are still no effective treatments when the disease spreads to other parts of the body. In order to find more optimal treatments, we need a better understanding of what causes a tumour cell to gain aggressive properties and become resistant to current therapies.

Through the support of the South Australian community, our vision over the next five years is to use the latest technological advances in gene sequencing to identify factors which predispose breast and prostate cancer cells to become more aggressive and resistant to treatment. Our research aims to discover new strategies to treat therapy-resistant, metastatic prostate cancer and identify factors that cause specific breast cancer cells to gain aggressive properties.

Our hope is that this research will lead to new strategies to detect and treat cancers cells before they become aggressive and spread. This will ultimately lead to earlier diagnosis of cancers most likely to spread, as well as more effective treatments for advanced breast and prostate cancer.

South Australia stands poised to be a world leader in this new and vital area of research for three critical reasons:-

We are thus well-positioned to begin to measure primary cancer cell growth in pre-clinical models and clinical trial patients receiving targeted therapy.
