Nearly two years after making the move to full-time self-employment, I have received a breast cancer diagnosis at age forty. I previously shared this information in Aprils quarterly newsletter. Since making the decision to be public about this experience, I am now posting about it on my business blog. I am doing so in hopes of reaching more potential donors. I also encourage readers to share my campaign on a regular basis to social media. Another fantastic way to help is by sharing my story on your own blog. Here today I will offer some tips for using the site based on my experience.
Cancer has proven a marvelous motivator in lighting a fire under my reluctant writers butt. That is why I have chosen to write such detailed updates for my GoFundMe breast cancer campaign. Those thousand or so words a week are working wonders to help keep my mental outlook in check. I plan to post for a year, and by doing do, in the end I will have over 50,000 words. Ive decided I will then compile the entries into a book. The whole ordeal has actually brought much-needed focus to my personal writing path. I have deemed myself a better editor than writer for years, but its time to get over that mental block. Im a damned good writer and know it.
Gofundme Set Up For Angus Mom Battling Aggressive Form Of Breast Cancer
Angus resident Kelsey De Sousa was dealing with the pandemic and the lockdown like everyone else, until two weeks ago when she was handed a cancer diagnosis.
De Sousa, 31, and her husband Tyler have three children five-year-old Rowan, three-year-old Autumn and one-year-old Bodi. Both parents are entrepreneurs, with Kelsey operating her hair salon and her husband working as an independent contractor.
It’s been a crazy year for everyone, and Ive been dealing with the four business shutdowns and everything else in life, Kelsey told BarrieToday. Now we deal with this new thing and it’s just a lot right now.
In late 2020, Kelsey found a small lump in her breast. After an exam with her family doctor and an ultrasound it was decided a mammogram wasnt needed due to her age she was notified a few days later it was just a cyst.
She was to follow up in four to six months to see if there was any progression.
After an ultrasound and a mammogram, she was referred to the specialized breast clinic, diagnostic assessment unit at Southlake Hospital in Newmarket.
Another ultrasound and mammogram led to the mother of three being informed she had triple negative breast cancer, an aggressive form of cancer that would require further assessment to see how far it had progressed. Further testing led to the realization that the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and developed into Stage 3 cancer.
“And that my husband cant be there with me, that is the sad part,” Kelsey added.

Some Cancer Patients Don’t Trust Hospitals Enough To Seek Treatment While Others Use Alternative Medicine As A Last Resort
Snyder and co-author Timothy Caulfield found that cancer patients launched GoFundMe campaigns for one of three reasons: 38% used unproven treatments in addition to legitimate ones, 29% were either afraid of hospital treatments or did not trust them, and 31% weren’t able to undergo a traditional treatment.
Many people decided to forego mainstream treatments based on misinformed beliefs, Snyder said, referencing campaigns that called hospitals “death factories” or said chemotherapy is a poison.
“People have turned down mainstream treatments in the past, but what is different about this is that crowdfunding is giving them the money to actually do that,” Snyder said. “I think that’s really concerning, because clearly people are dying as a result of that.”
Snyder said oncologists should be aware that crowdfunding can make it easier for people with a terminal illness to spend money on unproven alternatives if they do not accept their doctor’s diagnosis. This trend can normalize ineffective methods and create a false hope among patients, he said.
“I have a lot of compassion for that, I certainly understand that view. But instead of pursuing palliative treatment or accepting that diagnosis, they were again empowered to try everything, put a lot of money into these treatments are clearly ineffective,” Snyder said. “In doing so, may be causing themselves additional pain and suffering.”

The first symptom of breast cancer that most women notice is a lump or an area of thickened tissue in their breast.
Most breast lumps are not cancerous, but it’s always best to have them checked by a doctor. You should see a GP if you notice any of the following:

Kerry George, 48, is still working as an agency nurse two times a week due to financial fear, despite receiving an aggressive dose of chemotherapy once a week.
The mum-of-two found a lump on her breast at the end of June. She said: I didnt think much of it at first but I went to the doctors, got referred and found out it was cancer quite quickly. I started chemotherapy three weeks ago and it has really knocked me for six – I didnt expect it to hit me that hard so quickly.
“Its been very difficult during this time – Ive worked since I was 16 years old, through university, and I just feel let down. There doesnt seem to be any support in place for when people need it the most. I never envisioned this happening to me – there’s no support and if I dont work I dont get paid.”

The mum claims that working in a hospital is extremely dangerous for her during this time as her immune system is down due to chemotherapy. Kerry works mostly on a stroke rehabilitation ward but can be sent to cover any medical ward, which poses an extra risk of her catching Covid. She has to be careful not to pick up an infection because her white blood cell count is low.

GoFundMe is a crowdfunding site used to primarily raise money for personal expenses. The medical category sees the most action, but people use it to raise money for honeymoons, tuition, etc. The skys the limit. Platform: The most obvious reason to go with GoFundMe for personal fundraising is brand recognition and trust. Even for someone who understands the ins and out of how to effectively launch and run a social media campaign, most donors will gravitate toward sharing links from a site with a well-known name. GoFundMe deducts a 5% fee from each donation. WePay deducts 2.9% + $0.30 per donation. The site only accepts credit card payments, not PayPal. So even though I have a website in place, or could have created an author website to serve as my fundraising hub, I opted not to use PayPals donate button or a PayPal.me link. Even if a campaign doesnt reach its goal, users can withdraw funds at any time.
Offline Donations: Donors who wish to send cash, check, or payment via PayPal may do so and the amount can then be manually added to the tally on the website. This is a way to get around the service fees GoFundMe charges. However, even if you add the donors email address to the donation box and send them a thank you note, the email address does not get added to the campaign contact list maintained by the website.
