A Cure In Our Lifetime

In the 8 years since its inception, the BCRF has celebrated countless small victories in the field of breast cancer research. Discoveries are being made and questions about the disease are being answered. Collaborations among scientists are consolidating results and generating information about breast cancer, its diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The BCRF has a single-purpose mission and is organized according to a belief that the fastest route to eliminating breast cancer is to direct as much funding as possible to research, identifying the most promising clinical and genetic investigations and supporting them generously.

Overcoming residual disease in HER2+ breast cancer

ResearchHER2+ breast cancer recurrences can occur after HER2-targeting therapies due to surviving tumor cells known as residual disease . Based on previous work, Dr. Kabraji hypothesizes that RD is facilitated by quiescent cancer cells that promote an immune-exhausted microenvironment. To test this hypothesis, he and his research group are set to investigate the immune response associated with residual disease after HER2-inhibition, in patients and mouse models. In addition, they plan to determine how quiescent cancer cells promote immune evasion in the setting of RD. Finally, they aim to evaluate combined quiescent cancer cell inhibition and immune checkpoint blockade to eliminate residual disease after HER2 inhibition in HER2+ breast cancer.

Acknowledgment of SupportI am deeply grateful to be a recipient of the 2020 Breast Cancer Research Foundation-AACR Career Development Award for Translational Breast Cancer Research. This award will support my transition to becoming an independent investigator tackling an understudied mechanism of drug resistance in breast cancer: cancer cell quiescence.

Mission Statement

To support innovative research focusing on the causes, prevention, screening, treatment and cure of breast cancer.

New Jersey has often had the dubious distinction of ranking in the top ten states in the nation for breast cancer incidence and mortality. To strengthen the battle against breast cancer, citizens and policy leaders joined together to establish an innovative funding source to fund additional breast cancer research projects in New Jersey. On January 26, 1995, New Jersey enacted Assembly bill A1701, an act establishing the “New Jersey Breast Cancer Research Fund”.

Citizens now have the opportunity to contribute to the New Jersey Breast Cancer Research Fund through a check-off box on their state income tax form and through Epay. The Fund is administered by the New Jersey State Commission on Cancer Research, which is the only state agency dedicated to eradicating cancer through scientific research. Monies from the NJ Breast Cancer Research Fund support innovative breast cancer research projects, training fellowships, and educational conferences. The legislation was initiated by the New Jersey Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc.

Spoken Like A True Champion

There have been many times that I contemplated skipping my mammogram because the extra money just was not there. Then my surgeon’s office put me in touch with the American Breast Cancer Foundation and they offered me a grant for my screening mammogram. Without this funding, I may have made a quite different decision. Thank you from a survivor.

D.L. 3-year survivor

Because of my strong family history with cancer, my doctor ordered that I start getting yearly tests done. With no insurance, I cannot tell you how stressed I was that I was unable to afford to have them done. I was told The American Breast Cancer Foundation would help me and they turned out to be a blessing!

J.B.

When I called to schedule my mammogram and told the scheduler that I had no insurance she said I know someone who can help. She had a grant from The American Breast Cancer Foundation, and they were going to pay for my screening. If anyone I know is in my situation and needs help paying for a mammogram I know right where to send them. Thank you!

M.L.

I love how helpful and easy it was to apply, plus the staff was very nice. I will tell all my family, friends, and anyone about your program.

Edith G.Lahabra, California

Without the Breast Cancer Assistance Program, I wouldnt have been able to afford a mammogram. Thank you!

Will Stevens

When Will Stevens complained of aches and pains, the doctor advised his mother, Cassie, to give him a baked potato before basketball practice and to make sure he had plenty of Gatorade to drink. Wills health went from bad to worse. He lost weight and was tired all the time.

When they went to the hospital, Will was diagnosed with T1D. The family spent four days at the hospital learning a new normal and trying not to feel overwhelmed.

Soon after, the Stevens started participating in JDRF events and became part of the JDRF community, something they describe as a game changer.
