What Kinds Of Expenses Do People Often Have To Pay For Cancer Care

Out-of-pocket costs are expenses that cancer survivors and their families pay for health care. This care includes prescription drugs and medical services, such as provider and outpatient visits, emergency room visits, and hospital inpatient stays. For cancer survivors with health insurance coverage, out-of-pocket cost is their share of the cost that is not covered by insurance, such as copays, deductibles, and coinsurance. Cancer survivors without health insurance or with limited coverage may be responsible for the entire cost of care.

The economic burden to people with cancer is more than out-of-pocket costs. It also includes the time spent receiving medical care that could have been spent on a persons normal everyday activities. This part of the economic burden of cancer is called patient time cost.

This Years Annual Report Focused On The Economic Burden Of Cancer What Are The Main Findings

How much it costs to beat breast cancer

We found that the economic burden associated with cancer care in the United States is substantial, both nationally and for individual cancer survivors. In 2019, the national patient economic burden associated with cancer care was estimated to be $21.09 billion. This estimate includes patient out-of-pocket costs of $16.22 billion and patient time costs of $4.87 billion.

We also found that the cost varied by age, stage at diagnosis, and phase of care. For example, out-of-pocket costs per person were generally higher among adult cancer survivors aged 18 to 64 than among those 65 or older.

Among adults 65 or older who had Medicare coverage, out-of-pocket costs were generally higher for those diagnosed with advanced cancer than early-stage disease.

On average, adult cancer survivors experienced about $300 in time costs because of cancer care each year. This cost was higher among cancer survivors aged 18 to 64 than among those 65 or older. It was also higher among adults who had been diagnosed in the last 2 years compared to those diagnosed more than 2 years ago.

Costs Of Different Breast Cancer Treatment Methods

Another reason why breast cancer treatment costs vary dramatically is that there are many possible treatment methods available, and there are differences in the prices associated with these interventions. Here is a breakdown of the average cost of the most common treatments:

  • Mastectomy. There are five main kinds of mastectomies. Each one is a different type of procedure. Overall, the average cost for mastectomy surgery is $19,408.
  • Breast reconstruction. If you choose to undergo breast reconstruction surgery following a mastectomy, you can expect to pay an average of $5,000 to $15,000 per breast.
  • Chemotherapy. Depending on the number of sessions and the medications used, a round of chemotherapy can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000.
  • Medications. Breast cancer drugs may be used as a standalone treatment or alongside other treatments like chemotherapy. One of the most commonly prescribed drugs is Herceptin. The average total cost for taking this drug during cancer treatment is $160,000.

Encouraging Discussions Of Cost

The bottom line is that women with breast cancer want to know about cost information up front, said Dr. Greenupeven women with higher incomes and adequate insurance coverage.

The message for doctors, then, is that they should not be hesitant to address the financial implications of cancer treatment, and patients may welcome cost discussions, she said.

But there are several practical barriers, Dr. de Moor pointed out, such as doctors not being trained to have such conversations and the difficulty of estimating out-of-pocket costs for individual patients.

Thats not to say that costs should just be ignored or that there arent other members of the team who could make sure that information is provided, she said.

Some cancer centers have financial navigators who help patients with the financial aspects of cancer care, for example. But more needs to be done to identify and address patients cost concerns in a systematic and well-coordinated way, Dr. de Moor added.

More research is ultimately needed to understand the best ways to communicate cost information and how cost transparency influences patients behaviors. But in the meantime, said Dr. de Moor, many leading cancer organizations agree that information about treatment costs should be provided to patients.

Average Breast Cancer Treatment Options Can Vary By 121% Depending On The Stage Of Cancer

The stage of breast cancer a person may have is crucial to making treatment decisions and determining financial costs. The latter stages of breast cancer will on average require a more aggressive treatment option and cost significantly more. According to a study published via the National Center for Biotechnology Information , a stage 4 breast cancer patient could expect to pay 64% more for treatment, surgery and hospital care compared with a stage 1 or 2 patient.

Stage of breast cancer
$4,480 $7,660

Breast cancer stages refer to the cancers extent and are crucial to evaluating what type of treatment should be administered. If theres been more spread, the cancer is classified as a later stage and requires more treatment.

For example, a stage 0 breast cancer diagnosis means that the cancer is limited to the milk duct and is noninvasive. On the other hand, stage 4 breast cancer, also known as metastatic breast cancer, means the cancer has spread to other parts of the body outside of the breasts.

Breast Cancer: Will Treatment Costs Outpace Effectiveness

Stanton R. MehrEvidence-Based Oncology

Breast cancer was one of the first disorders to profit from the successful application of targeted therapy, and its treatment has changed dramatically from 20 years ago. Despite these advances, breast cancer is responsible for 14% of cancer deaths among women, second only to lung cancer.1

Table 1

The death rate has decreased since 1990 however, it is projected that about 40,000 will die in 2012 due to the disease ,1 with the most deaths occurring among African Americans, followed by Caucasians .2 The overall 5-year survival for 2002 to 2008 was 89%, with the longest survival rate in patients having localized disease and a much lower survival for those with metastasized disease .2

An estimated 227,000 new cases will be diagnosed in 2012, and it is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women. The incidence of breast cancer had declined by the year 2000 and has since remained stabilized.1 The highest incidence is seen in Caucasians, followed by African Americans.2 Breast cancer remains a cancer that is most often diagnosed in older women about onefourth of the cases will be diagnosed in women between the ages of 55 and 64 years, followed closely by women between the ages of 65 and 74 years.2

Factors responsible for the reduction in deaths are reduced utilization of hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women, earlier tumor detection, and improved therapies.1

High Incidence Results in Significant Economic Burden

The Procedure Of Breast Cancer Treatment

For treating breast cancer oncologists follow a thorough strategy. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, and biological treatment are performed for treating breast cancer.

The success of this treatment is dependent upon several factors such as the kind of breast cancer, its grade, and stage, the sensitivity of these cancer cells to hormones, the general wellness of the individual, and also the era of the individual

What To Ask About Health Insurance Coverage Of Your Treatment

Out-of-pocket costs are those you have to pay because your health insurance doesnt or after your insurance company has paid its portion. These costs can add up quickly and may make it hard for you to pay for other things you need. Youll want to be sure that your health insurance company pays or reimburses the bulk of your medical expenses. This means youll need to

  • Know the terms of your insurance policy.
  • Be aware of preferred or network doctors, hospitals, or clinics according to your policy.
  • Keep careful records of your health care costs

If any of your treatments might be done by out-of-network doctors or providers, find out about those costs from your insurance company too. Even when you know the terms of your policy, getting payments can mean re-submitting claims, appealing denials, and much more.

Usually, health care facilities and treatment centers have a financial department that handles health insurance concerns and problems. Ask your health care team if someone can help you with claims and understanding codes on the bills that are sent to the insurance company.

Physical Emotional And Social Effects Of Cancer

In general, cancer and its treatment cause physical symptoms and side effects, as well as emotional, social, and financial effects. Managing all of these effects is called palliative care or supportive care. It is an important part of your care that is included along with treatments intended to slow, stop, or eliminate the cancer.

Palliative care focuses on improving how you feel during treatment by managing symptoms and supporting patients and their families with other, non-medical needs. Any person, regardless of age or type and stage of cancer, may receive this type of care. And it often works best when it is started right after a cancer diagnosis. People who receive palliative care along with treatment for the cancer often have less severe symptoms, better quality of life, and report that they are more satisfied with treatment.

Palliative treatments vary widely and often include medication, nutritional changes, relaxation techniques, emotional and spiritual support, and other therapies. You may also receive palliative treatments similar to those meant to get rid of the cancer, such as chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation therapy.

  • Music therapy, meditation, stress management, and yoga for reducing anxiety and stress.

  • Meditation, relaxation, yoga, massage, and music therapy for depression and to improve other mood problems.

  • Meditation and yoga to improve general quality of life.

  • Acupressure and acupuncture to help with nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy.

Cost Of Chemo For Breast Cancer Varies Widely

Costs associated with different breast cancer chemotherapy regimens can vary significantly, regardless of effectiveness, according to new MD Anderson research. Understanding cost differences should help guide informed discussions between patients and physicians when considering chemo options.

Sharon Giordano, M.D., chair of Health Services Research and professor of Breast Medical Oncology, presented the findings at the 2016 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting in Chicago.

The costs of cancer care have been increasing dramatically, both for the health care system and for patients. As physicians, we increasingly are recognizing the financial burden on our patients, says Giordano. Both physicians and patients need greater access to information about the treatment costs so this critical issue can be discussed during a patients decision-making process.

The American Cancer Society estimates 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed this year in the United States. At least 35% of patients with breast cancer receive chemotherapy in addition to surgery or radiation.

Therefore, choosing equally effective but less costly regimens could impact costs of breast cancer care nationally by $1 billion every year, Giordano explains.

To calculate cost of care, the researchers analyzed claims from the MarketScan database of 14,643 adult women diagnosed with breast cancer between 2008 and 2012 in the U.S.
