Giving Hope To Those With Metastatic Breast Cancer

Posted by Guest Blogger

This post was written by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, as part of our ongoing charity spotlight series.

Sherry Bishop and Sharon Foster of St. Johns, Newfoundland have both been living with metastatic breast cancer for seven years. Metastatic breast cancer also called Stage 4 or advanced breast cancer is breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, such as the lungs, liver, bones, or brain. About 30 percent of women who are first diagnosed with early stage breast cancer will develop metastatic breast cancer, which is treatable although incurable.

Prior to meeting, Sherry and Sharon both experienced the isolation and fear that comes with this diagnosis. Despite being welcomed and loved by the breast cancer support group they had both been attending, the reality of the words terminal and incurable was not something that the others had experienced.

Susan G Komen Foundation

In 1980, Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan Komen, that she would do everything she could to end breast cancer. Brinker started Susan G. Komen Foundation in 1982, and it is now the largest breast cancer organization in the United States. Komens mission is to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening, and treatment. Komen invests in programs that offer breast cancer patients a comprehensive approach to fighting the disease with a focus on:

  • Patient advocacy
  • Equal access to high-quality care
  • Patient support
  • Education

Komen recently launched the African-American Health Equity Initiative with the goal to reduce disparities in the breast cancer mortality rate.

When Alma was diagnosed with breast cancer, her daughter Margarita wanted to help. Margarita turned to cancer.ca for trusted information to better understand her moms diagnosis, treatment options, and learn how she could provide the best support for her mom every step of the way.

Then, two years later, Margarita found a lump in her breast and began her own breast cancer journey. This time, Alma wanted to be there for her daughter, and knew that she could turn to CCS for information and support.

I would never choose to travel this road twice, but Im grateful CCS was there for us both times, says Alma.

Where The Money Goes: A Breast Cancer Donation Guide

When making a charitable donation, look for organizations that spend at least 75% of their budgets on program expenses. In the midst of Americas financial calamity, giving to a breast cancer charity might not be your top priority. But no matter how the crisis on Wall Street has affected you, its hard to ignore the need for more research into the disease, as approximately 200,000 new cases are diagnosed in U.S. women every year.

When youre considering making a donation, make sure you think about where your money is going. Watchdogs like the American Institute of Philanthropy and Charity Navigator can help you figure out how your charity of choice measures up. In general, you should look for a group with a high level of spending on program expenses, meaning that the organization devotes a large percentage of its budget to the programs and services it claims to provide. A good rule of thumb is to look for organizations that spend at least 75% of their budgets on program expenses anything below 33% suggests that an organization is not living up to its mission, according to Charity Navigator. You should also look for an association with as little money as possible going to administrative expenses, ideally less than 15%, which includes overhead costs as well as money to hire and compensate employees.

    Why Donate To Research

    Because research gets results.

When the National Breast Cancer Foundation was founded in 1994, nearly 25 per cent of all women diagnosed with breast cancer died from the disease within five years of diagnosis.

Over the past 25 years that survival rate has steadily improved. Now, 91 per cent of women are still alive five years post diagnosis.

NBCF believes this achievement is due to research the most effective way to improve the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Although progress is being made, there is still a long way to go.

And we wont stop until it is solved.

Its not every day that youre able to do something so amazing. Make today that day.
