Treatment For Inflammatory Breast Cancer
Treatment for IBC usually takes a combination of several therapies. It all depends on the specifics of your cancer, age, and overall health.
Chemotherapy can help shrink the tumor. It can also kill cancer cells throughout your body. Youll need surgery to remove the tumor, and most likely the entire breast and nearby lymph nodes. Radiation therapy can kill any cells left behind after surgery.
If the biopsy found that the cancer is HER2-positive, HER2 therapy can be part of your treatment plan. If your cancer is estrogen-positive, hormone therapy can be used. These are called targeted therapies.
What Causes Inflammatory Breast Cancer
Most inflammatory breast cancer is considered invasive ductal carcinoma. Ductal carcinoma is cancer that forms from cells lining your milk ducts. An invasive ductal carcinoma is cancer that spreads beyond your milk ducts, invading healthy tissue. Researchers dont know what causes these cells to become malignant .
Inflammatory breast cancer develops when cancer cells block lymph vessels. Lymph vessels are hollow tubes in your lymphatic system that allow lymph fluid to drain out of your breast. The blockage causes your breast to become red, swollen and inflamed. In most cases of IBC, cancer cells spread outward from your lymph vessels. Cancer that has metastasized affects your other organs and is harder to treat.
When To See A Doctor
Signs that you should call your doctor right away include:
- Red streaks coming from your breast
- Yellow or green pus
You should also see your doctor if any symptoms get worse. Theyâll do an exam to figure out whatâs causing your rash so they can prescribe the best treatment. Some simple rashes go away quickly with a special cream.
If you do have a breast infection, youâll need antibiotics. Make sure you finish all your medicine, even if you start feeling better right away.
Unless your doctor suggests otherwise, you wonât need to stop nursing. Try to fully empty your breasts so youâre less likely to get an abscess a pocket of pus that may need draining.
Drink plenty of fluids and get lots of rest to help your body fight off a breast infection.
Your doctor may want you to get a mammogram. This can give them a better idea of whatâs going on inside your breast.
If your symptoms donât clear up soon, your doctor may also want to do a biopsy. Theyâll remove a small piece of your breast tissue and look closely at it under a microscope.

Breast Reconstruction After A Mastectomy
After cancerous breast tissue is removed, you may be thinking about restoring your breasts shape. People who have had a mastectomy often want to restore the breast mound, but its also not uncommon to skip the restoration and go flat instead.
If you decide to go with reconstruction, know that you dont have to do so right away. You can put off reconstruction for days, months, or even years. In fact, if youre undergoing any other breast cancer treatments, like radiation or chemotherapy, you may decide to postpone reconstruction until those treatments are done.
Reconstruction has several forms. Some people may opt for a full silicone implant for their breast reconstruction. In other cases, a plastic surgeon may be able to use body fat, muscle, and tissue from another part of your body to rebuild a breast. Nipple reconstruction is also possible for some people.
Diagnosing A Rash On The Breast
If a woman is concerned about a rash on the breast, she should get evaluated by a medical professional immediately.
This often will include a breast exam and special imaging to see if there are any masses associated with the breast rash. Blood tests may also be helpful to determine if there is an elevated white blood cell count, which can often be a sign of infection, Dr. Gross explains.

In some cases, medication may be required. Depending on the results of this initial evaluation, the clinician may prescribe antibiotics and local measures to see if the rash is improved, says Dr. Gross. If breast cancer is suspected, the initial evaluation may include a biopsy to obtain tissue to examine under the microscope to confirm if the rash represents a form of breast cancer.
Dr. Ley agrees that in order to diagnose a rash versus inflammatory breastcancer, it’s important to have a doctor examine the breast.
“Sometimes we will do a small skin biopsy to further evaluate it,” Dr. Ley explains. “Its not uncommon though that patients are treated for a week or more with antibiotics, if the redness is not improving then we might start to consider that it could be something besides an infection. A rash does not tend to mimic inflammatory breast cancer.”

How Is Inflammatory Breast Cancer Different From Other Types Of Breast Cancer

Tests For Diagnosis And Staging
To diagnose inflammatory breast cancer, your doctor will perform a biopsy. Biopsy is a surgical procedure that removes some of the suspicious breast tissue for examination under a microscope.
Because inflammatory breast cancer usually does not begin as a distinct lump, but instead as changes to the skin, a skin punch biopsy is often used to make the diagnosis. During this type of biopsy, the doctor uses a circular tool to remove a small section of the skin and its deeper layers, and then stitches the wound closed. If your doctor can see a distinct lesion, he or she may perform an ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy. Ultrasound is an imaging method that places a sound-emitting device on the breast to obtain images of the tissues inside. Guided by the ultrasound, the doctor inserts a hollow needle into the breast to remove several cylinder-shaped samples of tissue from the area of suspicion.
If the biopsy shows that inflammatory breast cancer is present, your doctor will order additional tests to figure out how much of the breast tissue and lymph nodes are involved, and whether or not the other breast is affected. Breast MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, is considered the most reliable test for gathering more information about inflammatory breast cancer.

A New Lump Or Thickening

The treatment of rash under breast can be done by both using home remedies and doctors prescription . For home remedy the following would help reduce the irritation and itchiness
Olive oil
Applying olive oil on the legs and arms part with rash. Olive oil is rich in vitamin E and antioxidants, which help soothe your skin and reduce itching. You could also use a combination of olive oil and honey. Simply rub the mixture a few times daily until the rash heal completely.
Castor oil and coconut oil also help heal rashes naturally. A combination of vitamin E oil and liver oil is thus a good remedy.
Baking soda
You could also use baking soda, which help dry skin rashes. It also relieves the itching and inflammation associated with rashes. Add a 50 grams of baking soda to 150 milliliters of water. Apply the mixture on the affected area, leave it on for a few minutes before rising it off. Do this repeatedly for a few days. Note you can use coconut oil in place of water to make a paste that you can apply on the affected area.
Oatmeal
Due to the soothing and anti-inflammatory properties of oatmeal, its good for alleviating skin irritation and inflammation. Its thus excellent for rashes caused by eczema, sun burn, chicken pox and allergies.

Survival For Inflammatory Breast Cancer
Many factors can influence life expectancy for women with inflammatory breast cancer. These include:

- how big the cancer is and whether it has spread only to the lymph nodes or to other organs
- how abnormal the cancer cells look under the microscope
- whether the cancer cells have receptors for hormone therapies
- how well the cancer responds to treatment
Inflammatory breast cancer can develop quickly and may spread to other parts of the body. So, in general, the outlook with this type is not as good as for women diagnosed with other types of breast cancer. But doctors think that the outlook is improving as breast cancer treatment improves.

Management And Treatment Options For Inflammatory Cancer Of The Breast
For some women with IBC, the initial investigations to find a diagnosis may not confirm a benign or a malignant condition.
So, a patient may be given conservative treatments such as anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics. Monitoring of the response to antibiotic therapy is very important if symptoms do not improve further investigations will be necessary.
