It has been our experience that melanoma is on the rise for age group 25 to 40, and senior citizens. To address the problem, UCSF did a survey asking questions about the use of sun screen protection. From our findings we developed UCSF Free Touchless Sunscreen Dispensers. We want to demonstrate the importance of using sunscreen while young to protect the skin as it ages. We have placed our dispensers at parks, zoo and bus stop transfer points. This is a program that has gained support from our sunscreen supplier, who have donated several dispensers to this worthwhile cause.

There are scammers out there and they will pop up during awareness months such as this one.
You will see a lot of pink being worn and sold and millions will be raised by valid charities for this important cause. But its worth it to know where your money is going and the Better Business Bureau is a great place to start. There are also several other websites where you can verify the charity of your choice.
Some scammers will create fake charities and try to trick you with similar names or misspellings of well-known charities.
You also want to make sure the site you donate to uses your money wisely and doesnt spend too much on administrative costs. Some of those telemarketing charities take up to 90% of your donation.
Other scam fundraising techniques tell you a product you buy will be supporting the charity. Again, the portion may be negligible.

How The List Was Made
To identify America’s 50 worst charities, the Times and CIR pieced together tens of thousands of pages of public records collected by the federal government and 36 states. Reporters started in California, Florida and New York, where regulators require charities to report results of individual fundraising campaigns.
The Times and CIR used those records to flag a specific kind of charity: those that pay for-profit corporations to raise the vast majority of their donations year in and year out.
The effort identified hundreds of charities that run donation drives across the country and regularly give their solicitors at least two-thirds of the take. Experts say good charities should spend about half that much no more than 35 cents to raise a dollar.
For the worst charities, writing big checks to telemarketers isn’t an anomaly. It’s a way of life.
The Times and CIR charted each charity’s performance over the past decade and ranked it based on the total donations diverted to fundraisers, arriving at the 50 worst charities. By this measure, Kids Wish tops the list.
Tracking donations diverted to fundraising is just one way to rate a charity’s performance. But experts called the rating fair and said it would provide a unique resource to help donors avoid bad charities.
White, the Columbia University professor, dismisses the argument made by charities that without telemarketers they would have no money.

Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon
A new super PAC created to take money from donors in the name of fighting breast cancer asked the Federal Elections Commission on Tuesday to terminate its registration after Salon asked its founder questions about the purpose and intent behind the group.
The organization, called the American Breast Cancer Society, registered as a super PAC in a filing published Monday on the FEC website. Salon’s investigation, however, uncovered signs that the group is what campaign finance watchdogs know as a “scam PAC” a fundraising vehicle that presents itself to donors as a charity but intends to keep most of the money it attracts from donors, or pay it out to affiliated contractors.
Such “scam PACs” exploit an ill-defined space between federal campaign finance and state charity laws: Political action committees operate outside of laws regulating charities, which, in exchange for tax-exempt status, must meet certain requirements such as officially registering with state governments, publicly disclosing their executives, accounting for their expenses and so on.
“It is a way for them to get around the charity laws that’s exactly what they’re doing,” Stuart Discount, chief executive of the Professional Association for Customer Engagement, a trade association for direct marketers, told Reuters for a special report on scam PACs published in January.
“We’re just a startup,” Howard said. “We’ll figure the rest out later.”

Cancer patients and their loved ones have been receiving calls from solicitors asking for donations for breast cancer.
Unfortunately, the American Cancer Association is not a real organization, and is hoping you think its the American Cancer Society a well-known and respected organization.
The Better Business Bureau says there are many fake charities that try and cash in on the generosity and compassion from potential donors.
Not only do these scams cost you money, they also divert much-needed donations away from legitimate charities and causes.
Fake charities can approach people in person, over the phone, in a letter, postcard, email or social media post. They may also pose as someone needing donations for health reasons.
The BBB advises that if you receive any kind of charity solicitation or would like to support a charity, do your research first to make sure your contributions go to the right organization.

The Pink Fund provide financial assistance for people receiving active treatment for breast cancer.
Typically, they provide enough money to cover 90 days of nonmedical living expenses, such as home, utility, and vehicle payments.
The Breast Cancer Charities of America
Grants are typically up to $1,000 per person. The BCCA intend for these grants to cover housing and utility payments. They also partner with corporate sponsors to donate medicine and equipment to hospitals and clinics in developing countries.
According to their 2018 financial records, the BCCA spent $5,700,028 on programs and services, making up an estimated 78% of their total funding.

Is The Breast Cancer Society A Worthy Charity
Cancer Fund of America solicits donations across the U. S., including locally, through telemarketers, direct mail and online. The BBB found that more than 99 percent of all cash donations to the organization pay professional fundraising costs, salaries for charity officials, consultant fees and other expenses related to the charitys operations.* * *Cancer Fund of America and a related support group, Cancer Fund of America Support Services, Inc., reported they raised slightly more than $17 million in 2007, the most recent year in which public information is available. Of that total, Cancer Fund of America reported it donated $54,000 in cash to unrelated groups or individuals or about 3/10 of 1 percent. Of that $54,000, however, $50,000 went to a court directed cancer charity as part of a settlement with the Georgia Governors Office of Consumer Affairs. The state alleged the charity gave out deceptive and misleading solicitations to consumers.The salaries and benefit packages for charity president James T. Reynolds, Sr., two sons and a son-in-law totaled more than $537,000 for the same period.
Recent news accounts say that James T. Reynolds Jr. recently became head of yet another cancer organization, this one in Mesa, Ariz., and called The Breast Cancer Society. That charity has not operated long enough to file a federal report with the IRS.

But the California attorney general sued the charities, Dierks and LeConte in 2009, alleging, among other things, that donors were told their contributions would benefit their local police departments when they did not, and that potential donors were led to believe they were being solicited by current or retired police officers calling from inside their state, when that was not the case.
The complaint also alleged that Dierks and LeConte had filed inaccurate registration and IRS forms that made it appear they spent more money than they did on programming expenses to help police officers.
