Take Part In Research Studies

You dont have to have cancer to take part in a research study. There are different ways to get involved in this way. Some kinds of studies you might be able to try are:

  • cancer prevention trials, which try to find better ways to prevent people from getting cancer or lower the chances that they will get it
  • studies of families with an inherited condition that may increase cancer risk
  • cohort studies, which follow a group of people over time to study their cancer outcomes
  • cancer screening studies that look at different methods of detecting cancer

For more information about prevention trials, see the NCI brochure If You Want to Find Ways to Prevent Cancer, Learn about Prevention Trials.

The Facade Of Breast Cancer Awareness And Susan G Komen

Susan Goodman Komen died of breast cancer at the age of 33 in 1980. Her younger sister, Nancy Goodman Brinker promised she would find a cure for that disease. Brinker fulfilled that promise by founding The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

It has now become the largest breast cancer organization in the United States. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a multi-million-dollar nonprofit organization. In 2016 they had assets totaling over $347 million.

Komens mission is to find a cure for cancer. But nowhere on their site do they talk about how to prevent cancer. Only 21% of the money that Susan G. Komen received in 2010 went to cancer research.

Over half their money go toward promoting awareness and breast cancer screening. This awareness then leads to fueling the push for more mammograms. The organization gives its management huge salaries.

Brinker made $684,717 in 2012, a 64% jump from her $417,000 salary from April 2010 to March 2011. The Komen Foundation owns stock in General Electric. General Electric is one of the largest makers of mammogram machines in the world.

Komen also owns stock in several pharmaceutical companies, including AstraZeneca. AstraZeneca has long been a Komen supporter and having a visible presence at the Race For the Cure. The Komen Foundation endorses AstraZeneca’s cancer treatment drug Tamoxifen.

Why Is It Important To Support Nbcf

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. One in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. And more than 3000 Australians will die from breast cancer this year. Since NBCFs inception in 1994, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has improved from 76% to 91%. Weve come a long way. But theres still progress to be made. NBCF receives no government funding. What we do would not be possible without the support of the Australian public. By investing in game-changing research across the spectrum, including the areas of prevention and risk, detection, treatment outcomes and quality of life, youll be funding research that stops death from breast cancer. Research is the only way we can understand more about the cause and development of breast cancer so that we can more effectively prevent, diagnose and treat it. Make tomorrow better and fund research today.

Ny Attorney General’s Office Recovers Over $640k Donated To Fake Breast Cancer Charities

The charities bureau was able to take back more than $640,000 in money given to fraudulent charities claiming to be breast cancer support foundations

NEW YORK CITY — The New York Attorney General’s office seized over half a million dollars from charity con artists.

On Wednesday Letitia James announced that the charities bureau was able to take back more than $640,000 in money given to fraudulent charities claiming to be breast cancer support foundations.

“Our charities bureau has an initiative called operation bottom feeder and that’s what they are – bottom feeders,” James said.

The money that was recovered from the fake organizations will be donated to legitimate charities and foundations in Long Island and the five boroughs to provide mammograms, treatment, and support to women battling breast cancer.

Some of these organizations work to help women get diagnosed earlier and provide support during the process.

“We provide transportation, we provide prepared meals, we take dogs for walks after surgery if you can’t take your dog for a walk or you can’t take the garbage out,” survivor and program member Terry Prag said.

This money will also continue outreach to get women checked to get them low-cost or even free mammograms and treatment.

“There are so many resources that are providing free and low-cost screenings not just for mammograms but for all cancer screenings,” said Natasha Coleman of the American Cancer Society.

This Fact Sheet Started An Intense Discussion Online

Pin on Cancer/Breast Cancer Awareness

According to Snopes, the idea that Komen is using only a fifth of the money people donate to fund breast cancer research is technically correct, but the implication is wrong. In 2009 and 2010, Komen spent 20.9 percent of all proceeds on research. But it also spent 39.1 percent on public health education, 13 percent on health screening services, 5.6 percent on treatment, 10 percent on fund-raising costs, and 11.3 percent on administrative costs.

Not only is the criticism geared towards Komen outdated, but its also intrinsically flawed. Some people believe that charities only help the ill by funding research. This is not the case. Organizations like Komen deliver a wide array of services to support people with breast cancer. Its not just the research thats important.

Breast cancer charities and organizations raise money to research a cure and support people living with breast cancer. But how do you pick a breast cancer charity to support?

There are several options, and its always worth learning more about any charity before you donate so that you know your money is going toward what you want it to.

You can do your own research on breast cancer charities by looking them up on Charity Navigator, a website that tells you how charities allocate funds.

To get your search started, here are five breast cancer organizations with strong missions and transparency about how they use the money they receive.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Mission: Improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Vision: for young patients to not only survive their cancers but thrive in their lives after treatment

Charity Navigator Rating: 87.11%

Over 60,000 people will be diagnosed with leukemia this year. Over 80,000 people will be diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Both of these diseases are considered common forms of cancers in children. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkins disease, and myeloma. They do this through research, education, support, and advocacy. Since the organizations beginning in 1949, they have invested over 1.3 billion dollars in blood cancer research.

This organization has a strong focus on pediatric patients. Their Cures and Care for Children program invests in research to eliminate heart damage and other side effects from cancer treatments and research more effective ways to treat children with cancer.

In addition to cancer research, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society provides financial assistance for cancer patients to help with treatment costs and travel assistance. Their Urgent Need Program also provides financial support for those with cancer to help pay for rent, mortgage, childcare, food, and more essential living expenses.

Contributing To Cancer Research

There are many beneficial ways to contribute to cancer research or to help the cancer cause. Some people choose to give money to NCI. Although we do not solicit funds or participate in fund-raising activities, NCI can receive donations through the Gift Fund or the Breast Cancer Research Stamp.

Some people take action in other ways to make a difference in cancer. For example, they may volunteer, donate tissue, or participate in a research study.

Below are some of the ways you can provide support to people with cancer.

Is My Corporate Donation Tax Deductable

Beyond the Pink Ribbon | Local nonprofit funding metastatic breast cancer research

There are strict requirements under the Australian Taxation Office ruling in regards to donations and tax deductibility.

For a payment to be tax deductible:

= It must meet the definition of a gift or donation i.e. is voluntary and no material benefit is received in return= It must be made to a DGR . NBCF has DGR status= The gift must be money or property= The gift must meet gift conditions. For example, the requirement for cash is that it must be a minimum of $2 to be tax deductible, and you must have a valid tax receipt when claiming donations exceeding $10.

Note: When a donor receives large acknowledgement in return of a donation, it could prevent the payment from meeting the deductibility requirement.

When a payment is not a gift and considered a contribution , there is a minor benefit rule/condition that could be applied to the individual whereby they may only claim the relevant deductible amount. For example:

Amount paid must be more than $150 + benefit received must be no more than $150, and no more than 20% of the value of the contribution

Examples of minor benefit applications are available here

How Do You Decide Which Researchers Get Funding From Nbcf

Each year an open and competitive call is issued for research proposals. To ensure integrity, accountability and transparency when awarding funds, NBCF coordinates a rigorous peer review process. The NBCF peer review process is integral to supporting the best breast cancer research in Australia. The effectiveness and sustainability of the review process depends on externally appointed scientific and consumer reviewers with wide-ranging expertise in cancer research. NBCF has privileged access to some of the best scientific minds on a volunteer basis. Outcomes of the applications reviewed by the scientific Peer Review Committees and Consumer Advisory Panels are presented to our Research Advisory Committee . The recommendations made by the RAC are then submitted to the NBCF Board of Directors for final decision and approval.
