A 2020 Study Found Coffee Pods Have Estrogenic Activity

19-Year-Old with Size K Breasts Gets Help

The stay-at-home lifestyle of the pandemic may have caused some coffee drinkers to put more time into preparing their brew each day. Even so, December 2020 figures from the consumer data firm Statista suggest that 27% of Americans still enjoyed their single-use coffee maker last year.

Meanwhile, last May, a team of nutrition and engineering scientists at the University of Connecticut conducted an experiment with the same plastic coffee pods that many people use on a daily basis. In an abstract published in Current Research in Toxicology, the researchers concluded, “All capsule coffee samples possessed estrogenic activity.”

According to research like this 2011 study, estrogenic activity occurs when chemicals mimic or otherwise adversely affect the body’s naturally occurring hormonal process. Health problems that have been associated with this effect are increased rates of cancers , early puberty onset in children, obesity, reduced sperm count, and dysfunction of some sexual organs.

Lifestyle And Living After Breast Cancer

This latest study adds to previous research by Farvid suggesting that what breast cancer survivors eat and drink after a diagnosis can improve survival. AICR wrote about two of those studies here.

AICRs latest report on breast cancer survival found that evidence indicated certain healthy lifestyles improved survival, yet the evidence was limited to draw a conclusion. Cancer survivorship is a fast-growing area of research. What evidence does clearly show is that healthy eating and physical activity lowers risk of the most common cancers. That is why AICR recommends that cancer survivors follow the same recommendations to lower risk, if and when they are able.

Along with AICR, this study was supported by the Nationals Institute of Health and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Change In Skin Texture

Skin changes on your breast could be a sign that something is amiss. “Breast cancer can sometimes cause a change in the texture of the breast,” Dr. Shepherd says. “Watch for a reddish, pitted surface, similar to the skin of an orange. That happens because the breast tissue is becoming inflamed due to cancer cells blocking the small lymph ducts inside the breast and fluid accumulation.”

Coffee And Tea Consumption Are Not Associated With Harmful Quality Of Life Survival Outcomes Among Breast Cancer Survivors

The findings add to a growing body of literature that demonstrate coffee and/or tea consumption is not detrimental to breast cancer survivors, according to the study authors.

Survivors of breast cancer who consumed multiple cups of coffee and/or tea per day were not at an increased risk for worse quality of life outcomes, according to recently published study results.

Modifiable lifestyle behaviors such as unhealthy diet, insufficient physical activity and excess weight have been linked to worse oncological outcomes, deterioration of quality of life and more severe treatment-related symptoms, the study authors wrote.

Nutrition is often a relevant concern for breast cancer survivors since many report having asked for further information on how to better improve their health following treatment, according to the investigators.

The problem, the study authors explained, is that a significant proportion of breast cancer survivors fail to adhere to dietary guidelines.

One such recommendation from the Food and Drug Administration, is that healthy adults should not consume more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, or approximately four to five cups of coffee per day.

However, as the investigators noted, there has been a lack of research assessing the affects of coffee and tea consumption on quality of life among breast cancer survivors.

The Final Verdict On Whether Coffee Pods Are Bad For You Expert Says

If you use a single-cup coffee machine, here’s an interesting update. Change In Breast Size Or Shape

Weight gain, menstrual cycle changes and pregnancy or breastfeeding can all impact the size and shape of your breasts. But if your breasts change shape independent of these other factorsand if it occurs suddenlyit could be a sign of cancer and you should schedule a screening with your doctor, says Dr. Johnson. “This can occur in the week before your menses so always wait one week after to see if it goes away on its own,” she says. If it is occurring in both breasts, it is likely not due to breast cancer, she says.

Identification Of Breast Cancer Cases

In each biennial questionnaire, participants were asked whether they had been diagnosed as having breast cancer in the previous two years, and we attempted to interview nonrespondents by telephone. The response rates were approximately 90 percent for each questionnaire. Deaths were identified by a report from a family member, the postal service or the National Death Index. When a case of breast cancer was reported, we asked the participant for permission to obtain medical records. Since self-reports have been confirmed by pathology reports in 98% of instances, we included the few-self reported cases for whom we could not obtain medical records in the analysis. Pathology reports were also reviewed to obtain information on estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor status. 74 percent of the cases had receptor status information . Cases of carcinoma in situ were not included in the analysis.

Coffee Consumption In The United States

Fifty-four percent of adults in the United States drink coffee every day, according to the Harvard School of Public Health.

The average coffee drinker consumes three cups of it each day. Thus far, research indicates coffee doesnt cause breast cancer or increase its risk. In fact, it could actually be tied to a lower risk of breast cancer risk.

    The Dangers Of Using K

You might want to stick with your traditional coffee machine.

Opinions on having a morning cup of joe from a disposable coffee pod tend to be pretty divisiveyou either love K-Cups or hate em. But as of this week, personal opinions no longer matter for residents of one German city.

Hamburg has officially banned all coffee pods from government buildings, citing their negative environmental impact, according to CNN. But is your Keurig brew really that bad? Well, kinda.

Here are four real concerns about getting your caffeine fix from a coffee pod.

    More From Women’s Health

    1. They Produce a Ton of WasteThose little cups may not seem like a big deal, but think about how often you have to empty the Keurig bin at the officethose babies pile up fast. For every six grams of coffee, youre looking at about three grams of wastemuch less efficient than sticking with a more traditional brew. To put it in perspective, in 2014 Mother Jones estimated that we disposed of enough K-Cups to wrap around the world 10.5 times. Damn.

Sign up for Women’s Health’s new newsletter, So This Happened, to get the days trending stories and health studies.

    3. They Contain AluminumThe fact that K-Cups contain aluminum is also not great for the environment. Even if all that aluminum doesnt end up in a landfill , recycling aluminum produces some toxic byproducts that have to be buried in a landfill anyway. Not a problem you have to deal with if youre using an old-fashioned coffee filter.

    Daily Coffee And Survival

The study included 8,900 women who had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The women were part of the Nurses Health Studies and they had completed questionnaires about their dietary habits along with other lifestyle and relevant factors every four years. Lead author and AICR grantee Maryam Farvid, PhD., and her colleagues, calculated averages of the womens coffee and tea habits at least a year after diagnosis and every four years thereafter.

After a median of almost a dozen years, 1,054 women had died from breast cancer out of 2,501 total deaths. Drinking over three cups of coffee a day was associated with a 25 percent lower risk of dying from breast cancer compared to non-coffee drinkers during the course of the study. Drinking over two cups of daily coffee linked to a similar lower risk of dying from any cause. Using the last questionnaire women completed before they were diagnosed, the study found that coffee intake pre-diagnosis was not linked with survival.

Three cups of daily tea after diagnosis was also associated with a 26 percent lower risk of dying from any cause compared with non-drinkers. These links showed after taking into account breast cancer treatment, BMI, physical activity and other factors that can affect survival.

Coffee contains caffeine and other phytochemicals well studied in lab research for controlling cancer cell growth. Coffees compounds may affect survival by reducing high levels of insulin and inflammation, the paper suggests.

So What’s Up In Your Cup

In recent months, the study’s lead researcher, Ock Chun, Ph.D., MPH, confirmed to Eat This, Not That! in a phone discussion that her team did observe, as they reported in their abstract, that “coffee brewed from capsule machines may contain estrogenic chemicals migrated from plastic.”

However, Chun said, their research remained ongoing, and she explained: “We are exposed to these chemicals from everywhere these days.” That can include food packaging and even the paper some shopping receipts are printed on.

A little more about Lymphatic Drainage

Recent medical studies support the use of massage for increasing the production of the natural hormone oxytocin. Reports show that oxytocin induces significant growth inhibition of breast cancer cells as well as an ability to remove free radicals associated with cellular metabolic processes.

Cupping massage stretches and opens our lymphatic vessels helping increase blood circulation and movement of lymph which in turn helps carry out toxins and fluids out of our body. This cleansing process aids the breast tissue by reducing the accumulated waste, inflammation, rejuvenating breast tissue and potentially assisting the body in breaking down any benign cysts in the area.

Home breast care is easier today more than ever. Incorporating LURE simple and easy to use silicone massage vacuum cups in the shower or dry with any lubricant or body oil will help boost lymphatic flow and help carry out any unwanted waste and toxins from our bodies.

Study Suggests Coffee May Improve Survival After Breast Cancer

Breast Surgeon Dr. Kristi Funk Answers: Does Having Big Boobs Increase Risk of Breast Cancer?
    Mya Nelson

Mya R. Nelson is a science writer for American Institute for Cancer Research.

New research suggests that drinking coffee after breast cancer treatment may improve survival. The study, funded by AICR, adds to a growing body of research on how diet affects breast cancer survivors health.

The study was published in the British Journal of Cancer.

When it comes to cancer research, coffee lovers have had plenty of good news in recent years. AICRs evaluation of the global research found strong evidence that coffee protects against both liver and endometrial cancers. Other research has suggested coffee may lengthen survival.

But few studies have focused on how this popular beverage may affect breast cancer survival. These studies have been relatively small and given inconsistent findings.
