On The Day Of Your Breast Exam
- Wear a two-piece outfit since youll need to remove your upper garments for the test.
- Do not use deodorant, perfume, powder, creams or lotions on your breast or underarm area. Residue from the products may interfere with mammogram results.
- Plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.
- Bring as many of your previous mammograms as possible to your appointment for comparison with new pictures, as the radiologist looks for changes in breast tissue.
- Tell the technologist if you have implants or any skin changes, lumps or nipple discharge.
- Some women may experience slight discomfort, but the procedure is not harmful and will not damage breast tissue. Please let the scheduler know if you have difficulty standing as additional time may be needed to perform your examination.

Its a shocking statistic: About one in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer. Improving diagnosis, treatment, and survival rates for everyone affected by this pervasive and devastating disease requires a multi-pronged approach: investment in both research and education. Embracing this strategy together for more than 30 years, the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation and Northwestern Medicine have fueled advances in breast cancer care that now help patients in Chicago and far beyond.
A vital partner to Northwestern, the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation makes it possible for our scientists and clinicians to pioneer research and provide cutting-edge care to patients going through a very difficult experience. We are so grateful for the foundations insightful and impactful fundraising and generosity, said Leon Platanias, MD, PhD, director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University and the Jesse, Sara, Andrew, Abigail, Benjamin and Elizabeth Lurie Professor of Oncology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

Equipping Breast Cancer Experts Nationwide
The foundation also supports a competitive clinical fellowship program to train future experts in breast cancer care. The modern management of breast disease requires an in-depth knowledge of not only surgery, but also imaging, biopsy techniques, pathology, radiation oncology, and medical oncology. Such specialized training is only available at prestigious academic health systems like Northwestern, and only with donor support.
A Titan at NorthwesternTo date, the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Foundation has raised more than $40 million for breast cancer research and education. Its philanthropy helped establish the Lynn Sage Comprehensive Breast Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospitaltoday the largest program of its kind in the Midwestand enables physicians and trainees from around the world to collaborate at the Lynn Sage Breast Cancer Symposium hosted by Lurie Cancer Center the last 23 years running. The foundation is named for Lynn Sage, a beloved mother, daughter, and wife who tragically died in 1984 at age 39 as a result of her battle with breast cancer.
Former fellow Melissa Kaptanian, MD, 09 GME, moved to Montana after her training at Northwestern. For many years, she was the only fellowship-trained breast surgeon in the state, and today she leads the Logan Health Breast Center in Kalispell, Montana.
Today, a network of former Lynn Sage fellows is ensuring that patients across the United States have access to the specialized care they need.

What We Aim To Solve
The Lynn Sage Foundation funds promising scientists pursuing ambitious research that can change the trajectory of breast cancer. We provide funding early in their career, when research dollars are the most difficult to source. Providing two year scholarships allows these brilliant researchers time and funding to test and prove novel theories. The doctors then leverage this track record to continue their research with more substantial grants from nationally recognized entities.

Northwestern University Feinberg School Of Medicine
Chicago, Illinois
Training Program Director: Nora Hansen, MD
The Lynn Sage Breast Center at Northwestern University has had a multidisciplinary breast surgery fellowship since 1998. Two fellows are selected annually for this clinical experience. The fellowship was developed to enhance the basic knowledge in the management of breast disease from a multidisciplinary approach and is designed to prepare the trainee for a leadership role in multidisciplinary breast care in the academic or community setting with a focus on developing a career in academic breast oncology.
The program emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of modern breast care, and the need for incorporating patient education and participation in decision making into the treatment paradigm. The breast program is a designated component of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center which is the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the State of Illinois.
