The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center is a state-of-the-art diagnostic, imaging, and therapeutic facility located on the Memorial Hospital campus. The centers suite accommodates patients in varying stages of cancer treatment and has distinctive, separate areas for examination, consultation, and recuperation.
Previously an arthritis medical office, the newly renovated Breast Center is entered through a contemporary reception/waiting area on the first floor. Immediately opposite the reception desk is the Boutique, which allows patients to select cancer-specific accessories.
Adjacent to the central corridor are patient examination and procedures spaces, with two nurses stations adjacent to the rooms where imaging procedures occur. Slow, meandering arcs developed in the floor pattern in the patient corridor serving this area continue the theme of a contemporary, hospitality-type atmosphere.

The Breast Cancer Basics
Among the sea of vibrant autumnal shades youll see this season, youll also notice a slightly out-of-place hue: pink. Its the official color for breast cancer awareness, often found in the form of a ribbon. From professional athletes and celebrities to those participating in local community and school events, virtually everyone dons the color to show support, promote awareness, and raise money for the most common type of cancer to affect women in America other than skin cancer.
Dr. Betsy Washburn Surgeon and Medical Director, MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial
Breast cancer accounts for an estimated 30% of all cancer diagnoses in American women. On average, 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, explains Dr. Betsy Washburn, medical director for the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial. In 2018, the American Cancer Society estimates just over 266,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed, and nearly 41,000 women will die from the disease. In addition, there are more than 3.1 million American women with a history of breast cancer, including those currently undergoing treatment as well as survivors.
Most breast cancers begin in the ducts or the lobules and can metastasize to other parts of the body.
Dr. Laura Witherspoon Surgeon and Medical Director, Erlanger Center for Breast Health

Sonesta Select Chattanooga Supports Cancer Research
Mar 7, 2022 | Culture of Caring
Its officially official Sonesta Select Chattanooga Hamilton Place is open! The hotel has been part of the Sonesta family for some time now, but on February 22, they celebrated in a grand fashion with a ribbon cutting event, complete with food from favorite local restaurants and a #CultureofCaring initiative that we are proud of!
The hotels grand opening even brought our team together with their local community, where we were all reminded that we are #BetterTogether.
The hotel was decked out in pink to drive breast cancer awareness, and throughout the day, guests had access to mobile mammography for a health check right on-site. One of the highlights of the day was the silent auction, which brought the community together to raise over $1,500 for the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial Hospital.
The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center of Excellence is accredited by the American College of Radiology and the National Quality Measures for Breast Centers and provides the region with a full spectrum of clinical and support services.
We are #SonestaProud of our Sonesta Select Chattanooga team and know the funds they raised will go to advance the centers work helping cancer patients and their families.

Surgeons At Chi Memorial Certified For Hidden Scar Breast Cancer Surgery
Two surgeons at the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center at CHI Memorial, Chattanooga, TN, are recognized as Hidden Scar-trained surgeons. Betsy Washburn, MD, and Mark Brzezienski, MD, are just the second breast surgeon/plastic surgeon team in the country, and the only team in the Southeast, to perform this breast cancer surgery technique, which effectively treats cancer while optimizing cosmetic results.
Hidden Scar Breast Cancer Surgery allows Washburn to remove the cancerous tissue through a single incision made in an inconspicuous area, preserving the natural shape of the breast while reducing visible scarring. The technique also allows Brzezienski to create breast reconstruction results comparable to those of cosmetic breast surgery.

Why Choose A Center Of Excellence
Centers of excellence voluntarily undergo detailed examination of processes, quality indicators, and treatment plans to ensure that they are providing the best possible, most up-to-date care. Most physicians and clinicians practicing at centers of excellence eagerly seek additional training to remain at the forefront of advances in breast care.
The MaryEllen Locher Breast Center consistently meets or exceeds all quality standards of care, meaning you can rest assured the most advanced treatment options are available to you. And, unlike other breast imaging facilities, the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center is an all – inclusive center which allows women to go from a screening mammogram to a complete diagnostic work up in one appointment. While most women will never need the full range of services we offer, the few who do will have peace of mind in knowing they are in good hands. Our multidisciplinary team of professionals provide the best possible care while minimizing the time from finding a breast concern to diagnosis and treatment.
Betsy J. Washburn, M.D., breast oncology surgeon, discusses why the MaryEllen Locher Breast Center is the best choice for breast care in the Chattanooga region.
