Our amazing community of walkers, crew, and volunteers will welcome you as you get ready to spend three magical days together on a journey to end breast cancer forever.
The first day begins with an inspirational Opening Ceremony where the adrenaline and anticipation of taking on 60 miles is like nothing youve ever experienced before. The feelings of pride and strength youll realize while walking 60 miles through San Diegos cool surfside neighborhoods are only matched by the spirit and gratitude of the communities you encounter and those you are helping along the way. Youll walk along the Pacific Coast Highway and will be wowed by the beauty of Del Mar, Torrey Pines and Mission Bay!
Youll spend two nights in our outdoor camp, in the embrace of the dedicated 3-Day community, sharing stories, eating meals together and making new friends. It all culminates in a Closing Ceremony celebrating everything you accomplished, remembering those we have lost, and honoring those who are in the fight of their lives.
We do it for ourselves, our sisters, mothers, fathers, daughters and friends. Because we can’t sit idly by watching while breast cancer still exists in the world. Over the past 18 years, we’ve raised more than $863 million to save lives, support community programs, and make huge strides in breast cancer research.

And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.
There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. Its helping fund innovative research. It’s providing free information for people dealing with the disease. Its providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. How We Support the American Cancer Society
Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things – hard work and getting the word out. And we’re out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.

On Sunday, November 6, 2022, we will walk for the people who can’t: For those too weakened by treatment to join. For those who are suffering. For those we have lost. Together we will fight back against breast cancer.
This years San Diego MORE THAN PINK Walk will be a scenic 2.2 mile stroll through the heart of historic Balboa Park. A detailed route map will be available soon.
Types Of Breast Cancer
Breast cancers can be categorized into several types depending on where in the breast the disease begins, how the cancer spreads and other factors. Some breast cancers are a combination of cancer types.
Breast cancer can be categorized as either invasive or noninvasive:
- Invasive breast cancer breaks through normal breast tissue barriers and travels to other parts of the body through the lymph nodes or blood.
- Noninvasive breast cancer remains in the area of the breast where it started and does not spread.
The three most common types of breast cancer include:
Invasive ductal carcinoma
The most common type of breast cancer, invasive ductal carcinoma begins in the milk duct, breaks through the wall of the duct and spreads into the breast tissue. This is also known as infiltrating ductal carcinoma.
Ductal carcinoma in situ
Ductal cancers begin in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple. Ductal carcinoma in situ refers to an early stage of breast cancer that has not spread beyond the milk duct to healthy tissue. While DCIS is not life-threatening, it can raise a womans risk of developing invasive cancer.
Lobular carcinoma in situ
Lobular carcinoma in situ is a type of breast change in the glands that make breast milk. LCIS is not considered cancer, but it may increase the risk of later developing invasive breast cancer.
Less common or rare types of breast cancer include:
Inflammatory breast cancer
Paget disease of the breast
Papillary carcinoma

Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez A Recent Survivor Says Her Case Shows Mammograms Are Crucial
Hundreds of people focused on finding a cure for breast cancer converged on Balboa Park Sunday morning wearing just about every kind of pink garment you can imagine.
Aiming to honor breast cancer survivors and encourage women over 40 to get mammograms, they donned pink hats, pink socks and even pink wigs as part of the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 2-mile walk through the park.
Among the walkers was breast cancer survivor Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez, who was diagnosed with the disease in July thanks to a mammogram, and then had a double mastectomy.
Gonzalez said the walk, which was revived this year after a one-year hiatus because of COVID-19, is an important fundraiser for innovative cancer research and an opportunity to raise awareness about the need for early detection.
It shouldnt just be I wore pink or I talked about it, Gonzalez said near the walks starting line on Presidents Way. If you are a woman over 40, go get that mammogram. And if youre a man, there are plenty of women in your life you can encourage to get that mammogram.
Gonzalez said she is a great example of the difference a mammogram can make.
Self-screening is important, but for me there was no lump to feel, she said. The doctors said it would have taken another year or two to feel a lump, and by then it would have been invasive.
Gonzalezs husband, county Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, said his wifes experience should send a loud message.

Susan G Komen Announces 2nd Annual More Than Pink Walk In San Diego On Sunday November 6
Susan G. Komen®, the worlds leading breast cancer organization, today announced the return of the MORE THAN PINK Walk in San Diego on Sunday, November 6, 2022, in Balboa Park, located on 6th Ave. and Laurel St.
We are excited to welcome back Walk participants in person this year and grateful for the opportunity to provide a community for anyone who has been impacted by breast cancer. Whether you are in treatment, celebrating survivorship, or a family member, friend or loved one, we hope you will join us in November and be part of our collective efforts to end breast cancer forever, said Leia Brune, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen San Diego.
We welcome all the members of our breast cancer community honoring friends, family and anyone who has been impacted by the disease, said Brune. The MORE THAN PINK Walk is about making steps toward curing breast cancer and the funds raised through registrations and sponsorships will give more individuals who have been impacted by the disease access to resources and the support they need now.
The MORE THAN PINK Walk in the scenic Balboa Park on November 6, will begin with an opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. followed by the walk at 9 a.m.
Registration for this years event is free and qualifying participants who register early will be able to receive exclusive prizes from sponsors of the event.
This years sponsors include Epic Sciences, Wawanesa Insurance, Soapy Joes Car Wash and Dunkin.

Susan G Komen More Than Pink Walk Raises Awareness About Breast Cancer
SAN DIEGO Loud and proud decked out in pink was a group hoping to make a difference.
Thousands packed Balboa Park for the Susan G Komen More Than Pink Walk and among the crowd were survivors and loved ones hoping to raise breast cancer awareness.
I was diagnosed in 05,” said Nancy Rosete, survivor.
Nancy Rosete is 17 years breast cancer free.
She said positivity got her through her fight.
“I have 6 of them 6 grandchildren and I looked forward to playing with them. It just gave me strength, said Rosete.
At her side was one of the grandchildren she fought to spend time with.
Malia Ponce said her grandmas story has made a really big impact on her life.
“Just seeing her strive. She does so much stuff. Seeing how much stronger shes gotten even back then I was so little I didnt really understand what was going on,” Ponce said. “So seeing her and seeing that she lost hair I always wondered what was going on and as I got older she told me her story.”
The two have been participating in the walk for years.
“Its always fun. I love seeing all the different people dress up, said Ponce
With every step, there was more hope for a cure. More than half a million dollars was raised right here in the San Diego community.
“Each year I put together a top team. We raise the most money as a team and Im here really because this is solidarity, said Merrilee Neal.
The money she and her team raised will go towards research and even helping others work to beat breast cancer.

Being an advocate for breast cancer awareness and research funding is one of the best ways you can make a difference.
Only through government action can we make the broad, systemic and lasting change we need to help us achieve our goal of reducing the current number of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. By mobilizing our communities to take action, we can ensure the voice and needs of those with breast cancer and their loved ones are heard by policymakers and government regulators.

Conductors and CAST members volunteer and participate in their own fundraising efforts which include the donation of daily tips, weekly bake sales, a silent auction and raffles.
At our ticket booths, bottled water is offered to our guests for a donation request which is then contributed to the cause.
CAST members, family and friends sign up for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society event, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Our pretty in pink trolley will be participating in this event held this year at Balboa Park on October, 16, 2022.

I came here with no hair, nauseous and sick, not sure if I was going to make it and I saw all of these women with signs saying 17-year survivor, 25-year survivor.It was so empowering to know and it gave me hope, Vanvieldt said.
Vanvieldt says through her journey she found out Black women have a higher chance of death when diagnosed with breast cancer.
Its not because we have some genetic issue that causes it, its because we dont have access to health care and when we find out about it, it tends to be too late, she said.
According to the Susan G. Komen San Diego Chapter website, they have raised $449,981.97, with a goal of $575,000.
We are going to do that through research to fight the most deadly and aggressive breast cancers, but also to provide care to women who need it now regardless of their insurance status or what their zip code is, Klink said.
