Changing your relationship to food and eating involves a major shift in thinking, feeling and doing. The goal of this shift is to create a lifestyle change, not to temporarily lose weight on a diet.
Choosing, making and eating food with an “Abundance Model” includes the pleasures of delicious choices, many tastes, ample portions, not feeling limited, not counting calories and eating when hungry.
This is in contrast to the more common “Deprivation Model” where rules of “do not” and “should not” leave us feeling bad or guilty with unmet hunger and cravings. Cycles of stress and depression-related eating are common with this model. A shift from “I can’t eat without feeling bad and guilty” to “I enjoy an abundance of healthy, delicious food” often results in a better-nourished and healthier self.
1. Lower dietary fat to between 10% to 20% of calories

Meat Fish Fowl Eggs Dairy Products
All beef, all pork, all fish, all turkey, and all chicken should be avoided during cancer treatment. There are many reasons for these restrictions. The only exception is that if a person is fighting weight loss some fresh, freshwater fish can be eaten if that is the only thing the cancer patient will eat .
Avoid all dairy products, including butter, all cheeses, and all malts, except cottage cheese or skim milk when used in the Budwig Diet. One exception is that pregnant and nursing women should eat two eggs per day because the choline is necessary for the baby’s brain development and the baby takes precedence since two eggs a day is not life-threatening to a cancer patient.
If a person must have milk, the only acceptable variety is unprocessed goat’s milk, from organically raised and grazing goats.
Robert O. Youngs book Sick and Tired? Reclaim Your Inner Terrain contains two pages detailing why all animal products are bad for humans. Specifically, meat is bad for a cancer diet.
The rule of thumb: If it contains something that came from an animal, it is forbidden.
Food You Should Avoid
On the other side, there are some types of foods you should avoid, such as includes:
Burger, pizza, fries, etc.are good in taste but bad for health. So, during the treatment, it is a big no for the patients.
Alcohol- Intake of beer, wine, and liquor can react with the medicine and cause harmful effects. So, avoid it and switch to healthy drinks.
Sugar- Added sugar invites cancer cells, so you should cut it from the daily diet for breast cancer patients. Cookies, cakes, and candies cause weight gain, which causes several health issues.
Undercooked Food- Keep raw or undercooked foods like sushi and oysters away from your plate. Eat cooked meats, fish, and poultry to reduce the chances of a stomach infection.

Eating Guidelines During Endocrine Therapy
Hormone treatments include tamoxifen, leuprolide , and aromatase inhibitors such as anastrozole , exemestane , and letrozole . These may be used for short or long periods of time. If youre getting hormone therapy, review the following guidelines.
Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can interact with many medications. Avoid eating grapefruit and drinking grapefruit juice if youre taking tamoxifen.

A hot flash is a feeling of intense heat that isnt caused by an outside source. Hot flashes are a problem for some people during menopause. They can also be a problem for people getting treatment for breast cancer. Hot flashes can be different for everyone. They may last for different lengths of time and may come and go.
Staying at a healthy weight or losing weight if youre overweight may help with hot flashes.
A stressful or warm environment can start a hot flash. Some foods and drinks can also start hot flashes or make them worse.

Two New Studies Suggest Diet Can Help Breast Cancer Survivors Live Longer

Can breast cancer survivors diets help them live longer? Two new studies both partially funded by AICR suggest yes. The research yields important insights into an area that has previously given inconclusive findings.
Today, more women than ever before are surviving breast cancer and that has led to increased research into how diet may play a role in survival. Breast cancer survivors are at increased risk of developing another breast cancer and cardiovascular disease, which increases risk of mortality. In 2014, AICRs systematic review of the global evidence found there was not enough evidence to conclude that diet affected breast cancer survival.
Some research conducted in recent years has hinted that a healthy diet can improve survival, such as these papers AICR has written about here and here. However, there is a critical need for more and better research, says Nigel Brockton, PhD., AICRs Vice President of Research.
Many of the estimated 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the US are eager for reliable dietary advice that can help them live longer, healthier lives, said Brockton. AICR funded this research to help provide some of those answers.

Choose Foods With Healthy Fats
Its healthy and necessary to include some fat in your diet. There are different types of fat. Some are healthier than others.
Fat has a lot of calories. One gram of fat has 9 calories, while 1 gram of a carbohydrate or protein has 4 calories. This means that high-fat foods have a lot of calories in a small amount of food. This is important to remember if youre trying to lose weight or stay at a healthy weight.
For people with certain medical conditions, limiting fat may be helpful. For most people, its better to avoid eating too many calories and choose healthier types of fats instead of avoiding them completely.
Saturated and trans fats
Saturated and trans fats may raise your cholesterol levels. High cholesterol is often linked to heart disease. Limit the amount of saturated and trans fats in your diet.
Saturated fats are naturally occurring fats. The following foods have lots of saturated fats:
- Full-fat dairy products
- Palm oil
Most of the saturated fat people eat come from foods like burgers, sandwiches, pizza, and desserts.

There are many myths surrounding sugar and cancer treatment. But what do cancer patients really need to know about sugar to make sure theyre getting the best diet during treatment?
We spoke with Erma Levy, a dietitian at MD Anderson, to find out.
Eating dessert wont make your cancer spread
Many people think that sugar will make your cancer spread, but thats not technically true, Levy says.
Every cell in your body uses sugar, and that includes cancer cells. But that doesnt mean sugar will make your cancer spread.
The danger in sugar is that its basically empty calories. It would be better to consume vitamins and nutrients that help your body stay strong during cancer treatment, Levy says.
You dont need to cut all sugar from your diet
Eliminating all sugar from your diet is difficult and unnecessary.
You dont need to take an all or nothing approach, Levy says. Its best to consume no more than the recommended amount of sugar each day and to try to take in less sugar if you need to.
The American Heart Association recommends no more than six teaspoons of added sugar per day for women and nine teaspoons per day for men.
Levy says its more important to focus on consuming less added sugar than natural sugars, like those found in fruits and grains.
Thats because added sugar which is found in drinks and processed or prepared foods — can lead to unwanted weight gain, which can cause other health problems.
Artificial sweeteners arent necessarily healthy

Mushrooms Seaweed Other Saccharides
There are some mushrooms that are used in cancer treatments, generally as supplements. Realizing that some mushrooms kill cancer cells, but are at the same time primarily a fungus, take heed. Mushrooms are one of the good and bad foods. Use with caution.
The good news about mushrooms is that they do contain polysaccharides, which are essential to the immune system. Mushroom supplements such as beta glucan are certainly acceptable to a cancer diet.
Seaweed is also high in polysaccharides. Modifilan is a brown seaweed extract that has at least three nutrients to kill cancer cells: furanone, fucoidan, and alginic acid.
Aloe vera supplements also can be high in polysaccharides and the glyconutrients but the glyconutrients are difficult to process out of the aloe vera.
The next items also provide polysaccharides.
Dr. Young says to stay away from blue-green algae, chlorella, and spirulina. For cancer patients, we strongly disagree with this advice with regards to the chlorella and spirulina.
The benefits of chlorella and spirulina to a cancer patient, I believe, far outweigh the negative aspects. Between spirulina and chlorella, they contain polysaccharides , Vitamin B12, GLA, Chlorophyll Growth Factor and a host of other powerful anti-cancer nutrients. A vegan diet simply cannot provide all of these things.
If you do choose to avoid these items, then make sure you eat plenty of fresh organic broccoli.
When You Are Diagnosed With Cancer You Need To Develop A Practical Plan To Deal With The Disease Including Paying Close Attention To What You Eat
Your body needs enough calories and the right mixture of nutrients to stay strong as you face cancer and its treatment. According to the American Cancer Society, good nutrition is important because cancer, and cancer treatments, can impact how your body uses nutrients and how it tolerates certain foods.
Here are a few things to remember, as you adjust to life after a cancer diagnosis.

Fruits Dried Fruits And Fruit Juices
The only fruits that are allowed on this diet, without restrictions, are:
- unsweetened lime
- unsweetened lemon
That is it. Lemons are actually a required part of any cancer treatment because of their beneficial effect on the liver and because they get oxygen into the body. Lemon juice and lime juice should be taken primarily just before bedtime.
One exception to this general rule is special fruit fasts, such as the Brandt Grape Cure. When the body gets nothing but a potent fruit mush, it is a potent cancer cure.
Another exception to these general rules is for those on a cesium chloride protocol. They are allowed to eat fruits rich in potassium in order to meet their potassium quota.
Peaches Apples And Pears
Fruits specifically peaches, apples, and pears have been shown to safeguard against breast cancer.
In a study in 75,929 women, those who consumed at least 2 servings of peaches per week had up to a 41% reduced risk of developing ER breast cancer .
Interestingly, a test-tube study revealed that polyphenol antioxidants from peaches inhibited the growth and spread of a breast cancer cell line .

Beans are loaded with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Specifically, their high fiber content may protect against breast cancer.
A study in 2,571 women found that high bean intake reduced breast cancer risk by up to 20%, compared with low bean intake .
Additionally, in a study in 1,260 Nigerian women, those with the highest intake of beans had up to a 28% reduced risk of breast cancer, compared with those with the lowest intake .

What Is Healthy Eating
Healthy eating is about balancing your food intake to make sure you get plenty of healthy foods such as vegetables, fruit, wholegrain breads, and cereals. Its also about cutting back on the not-so-healthy foods like sugars, salt and saturated fats. With healthy eating, you can continue to enjoy treats in moderation.
