October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in American women after skin cancers. In fact, a woman in the U.S. has a 12% risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Furthermore, there is a 1-in-38 chance that one will die from breast cancer. Every October since 1985, millions throughout the world get involved in Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a campaign that increases awareness of a disease that afflicts approximately 1 in 8 women in the United States.
The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it is detected early enough. This is why education and awareness are so important.
Here are 10 ways you can get involved during Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
1. Wear pink. A pink ribbon is an international symbol for breast cancer. Wearing a pink ribbon – or pink clothes – is an easy way to show your support for those who are fighting breast cancer. Pick out your favorite pink outfit and encourage your friends and family to do the same. Pink nails, pink hair, pink makeup, pink bracelets pink anything. Be creative in thinking pink this October.
2. Volunteer. There are numerous local and national volunteer organizations that raise awareness for breast cancer. Many people volunteer for the American Cancer Society , a nationwide voluntary health organization committed to eliminating cancer. Listen To Cancer Patients
Remember that when you speak to a cancer patient, they dont necessarily feel like warriors or survivors they dont always want to have a positive attitude. And nothing they did, from eating sugar to consuming processed foods, caused their cancer.
When somebody trusts you enough to tell you they have cancer, dont respond by telling them theyre a warrior, or insinuate that they did something wrong. Just tell them that you are sorry this happened to them, and that you are here to listen. Its important that you speak to them as the friends, colleagues, or loved ones theyve always been. Cancer can be isolating, but you can be that reassuring figure who reminds them that they dont always have to pretend to be brave.
Pink October has become almost a national holiday, with pink promotions everywhere. However, the money donated by companies often doesnt go where its needed most: to metastatic cancer patients. We incurable cancer patients are your mothers, your sisters, and your grandmothers, and we need your support.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month: 5
- Breast Cancer Awareness Month: One of the most common cancers in women, breast cancer can be treated successfully if detected at an early stage.
The number of breast cancer cases have been rising at an alarming rate across the globe. One of the most common cancers in women, breast cancer can be treated successfully if detected at an early stage. It can even affect younger women and beginning from 20 years of age, regular screening and self-examination is required.
Some common symptoms of breast cancer are painless lump in the breast or armpit, change in breast shape, dimpling in the breast skin, abnormal nipple discharge and nipple retraction or ulceration.
As per International Agency for Research on Cancer, a total of 1.78 lakh new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in India in 2020 which was 26.3% of all cancer cases diagnosed in women in the country making it the most commonly diagnosed cancer in India.
Currently, there is a spurt in cases of breast cancer. Thus, it is imperative to catch it early and treat it efficiently. Younger Women Do Not Believe They Are At Risk Of Breast Cancer But It Can Strike At Any Age
Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death for women around the world. But there are some preventive measures that can extend their life, and regular screening is one of them.
A mammogram is a standard approach for screening breast cancer. According to Dr Madhuri Burande Laha, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, Motherhood Hospital, Kharadi, Pune, the right age for women to go for mammograms varies. According to some research, it is recommended to do it in your 30s and some others suggest it is ideal to get it done before the age of 45.
Screening mammograms can detect breast cancer early, and it should begin at the age of 40. The findings of randomized trials involving women in their 40s and 50s show that screening mammograms reduce the risk of breast cancer deaths, says the doctor, adding that mammogram screening is not without defects. Another study found that even though mammogram screening has resulted in more early breast cancer diagnoses, the number of advanced breast cancers has not decreased.
Dr Laha explains that doctors are unable to predict which breast cancers will spread beyond the breast and which will remain contained. As a result, annual mammograms are considered best for detecting cancer early, increasing the chances of curing and lowering the risk of death.

Breast Cancer Screening Aims At Finding Breast Cancer Early On
Today, the prognosis for breast cancer is reasonably good, as it has an 89% five-year survival rate. The aim of breast cancer screening is to detect cancer earlier than without screening. In Finland, women diligently participate in breast cancer screening nearly 90 percent of the age group follows the invitation sent every two years.
The main benefit of screening for breast cancer is the decrease in the mortality rate. According to studies, mortality among women who are over 50 years and who are invited to screening is about 22% lower than in situations without breast cancer screening. Screening often also helps to detect breast cancer early on when it is easier to treat. Moreover, breast cancer that is found at an early stage can usually be treated by using breast conserving therapy.

What Is My Risk For Breast Cancer
Being a woman is the main risk factor for breast cancer, as the disease is most commonly found in women in ages 55 and older. Multiple uncontrollable factors such as race and ethnicity, personal/family history, breast density and menstrual period history increase the risk of breast cancer occurrence. In addition, having changes in certain breast cancer genes increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
Another category is the lifestyle-related risk factors, such as the use of birth control pills, hormone therapy after menopause, childbirth, alcohol consumption, extra weight and sedentariness.
It is important to keep in mind that having one or several risk factors does not mean a woman will develop breast cancer. Although is it important to be familiar with all of the risk factors and especially for those that can be controlled by lifestyle to lower the risk of breast cancer. Physical activity of at least 150 minutes at moderate intensity or 75 minutes at vigorous intensity activity is recommended. Further, the ACS advises that women have no more than one alcoholic drink per day to reduce breast cancer risk. Regular breast cancer screening is also recommended by ACS for all women above the age of 40.
