Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day: What it’s like to live with the disease

Although breast cancer is not the most fatal and incurable disease, the high-risk possibility is what makes it dangerous. Breast cancer is so common as the number of breast cancer patients is among the highest out of all cancers and other deadly diseases. In fact, there is a new victim being diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes, which means the ratio is one patient out of eight women. According to international surveys, approximately 40 thousand patients are annually lost to this cancer, the reapers will take away a woman every 13 minutes.

On the bright side, the death rate is gradually decreasing due to the increase in awareness, which encourages US women to perform early detection like mammograms as well as self and clinical tests. The effectiveness of activities for breast cancer awareness month has prevented up to 30 percent of the death rate.

Research Studies

A Study of Familial Breast Cancer in BRCA Mutation-Negative Families: Women with a strong family history of breast cancer, but no BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, are two to four times more likely to develop breast cancer than women without a family history. Despite this elevated risk, no clinical guidelines have been developed for the care of these women. This study evaluates factors which may influence their risk.

Rd Week Of October = Male Breast Cancer Awareness Week

Because of the rarity of male breast cancer, which accounts for less than 1% of all breast cancers diagnosed worldwide and for 1% of all cancers in their gender, men affected by breast cancer find little support in their fight against the disease. Men are frequently excluded from breast cancer trials and, in deciding which treatments to offer, their doctors usually extrapolate evidence from the studies assessing therapies among women with breast cancer. Additionally, male breast cancers are often diagnosed later, when the disease is already more advanced, leading to a worse outcome.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Oct. 1 marks first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month , also referred to in the United States as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month , is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

Observances of the event have faced criticism for corporate involvement by drug companies, as well as instances of pinkwashing associated with the events.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month In October

The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, helps to increase attention and support for the awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease.

There are about 1.38 million new cases and 458 000 deaths from breast cancer each year . Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. In low- and middle-income countries the incidence has been rising up steadily in the last years due to increase in life expectancy, increase urbanization and adoption of western lifestyles.

Currently there is not sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option. In such cases, palliative care to relief the suffering of patients and their families is needed.

Metastatic Breast Cancer: A Fact A Day 31 Days Of October

  • What is Metastatic Breast Cancer? MBC also known as Stage IV is cancer that has spread outside of the breast to other organs such as bones, liver, lung or brain. This process is called metastasis.
  • What happens when breast cancer spreads?Breast cancer that spreads to another organ, such as bones, lung, or liver, is still breast cancer and does not become bone cancer or liver cancer or lung cancer. Under a microscope, the tumor cells will still look and act like breast cancer and will be treated as breast cancer.
  • Who gets metastatic breast cancer?

    Produced by The MBCAlliance

No one brings metastatic disease on themselves. The sad truth is that anyone who has had an earlier stage of breast cancer can experience a metastatic recurrence and some women have metastatic disease on their initial diagnosis of cancerdespite mammograms and early detection!

  • Why does breast cancer metastasize? Researchers at this time cant explain why metastatic disease occurs, but theyre working on finding answers. Early detection is a detection tool, but it does not a cure or prevent an early cancer from coming back in the future as metastatic disease.
  • What are the statistics on incidence of metastatic breast cancer? There are estimates that 20-30% of patients with an early stage cancer will have their cancer return as metastatic, even if they were told their early stage cancer had been cured. Another 8% of new breast cancer cases are found to be metastatic at their initial diagnosis.

Signs And Symptoms Of Breast Cancer

The most common signs of breast cancer include:

    • Lump in the breast or underarm

    • Swelling or thickening of all or part of the breast

    • Dimpling or irritation of breast skin

    • Localized, persistent breast pain

    • Redness, scaliness or thickening of the nipple or breast skin

    • Nipple retraction or discharge

    • Any change in the size or shape of the breast

It is important to remember that breast lumps are common, particularly in premenopausal women. There are many different kinds of lumps, most of which are not cancerous tumors. The majority of lumps turn out to be benign, such as the soft, fluid-filled lumps that feel tender , the rubbery lumps that move around under the skin and are usually painless, or the fibrocystic changes leading to painful, lumpy breasts. Benign lumps develop from fatty tissue deposits or breastfeeding when sacs filled with milk form cysts. One can even get a lump as a result of an injury, such as when your breast gets bruised or after breast surgery. Every woman should learn about these signs and do monthly breast self-exams along with regular mammograms, which, along with knowledge of risk factors of breast cancer, can help women keep this disease at bay.

We don’t have an international authority or governmental remit to declare any officially celebrated “national Breast Cancer Awareness day”. We only aim to programatically reflect what ‘National Day’ it is based of what The Internet Says It Is. We believe this is much more fun as it reflects the nature of how the most amusing / interesting national days are often created organically and grow based off popular social trends and sharing, as such we don’t add new days to our database unless they are organically observed on social media.

    About Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes place every October. The aim of the BCAM is to shine a light on the devastating impact breast cancer has on thousands of Australians each day.

Over 20,000 Australians will be diagnosed with the disease this year alone.

That equates to 55 Australians every day.

And over 3000 Australians will lose their lives to breast cancer this year. Thats someones mother, sister, friend or family member whose life has been tragically cut short because of the disease.

Although the five-year survival rate has increased from 76% to 91% since 1994 thanks to research, there is still progress to be made to stop deaths from breast cancer. By targeting the remaining 9% who dont live past this survival rate, NBCFs goal is to reach Zero Deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

We rely entirely on generous donations from the Australian community to fund leading breast cancer researchers. Through these funds, we are able to invest in world-class research in prevention, detection, new and improved treatment and quality of life to ultimately stop deaths from breast cancer.

    Fundraise For Game Pink

Bilateral synchronous breast cancer is a rare finding in women presenting with multiple breast lumps, and it can be invasive or noninvasive, and having a family history of it can be one of the possible reasons behind it. Bilateral breast cancer is when the tumours are seen developing in both breasts of the same patient. It can be classified as synchronous bilateral breast cancer which is when the cancer is seen developing at the same time. Asynchronous or metachronous bilateral breast cancer is when cancer tends to develop at different times.

Yes? No.. Sort of | Maybe ¯\__/¯

What’s really intersting is how whilst some National Days like National Daughters Day are seemingly celebrated internationally irrespective of geography, some very popular days are in fact locally very specific and are offical holidays celebrated on a Country’s national calendar. Take National Rambutan Day for instance, Rambutan is a popular Souteast Asian fruit and not seen so much in the UK, Europe or the USA. Some regionally specific trends subsequently become immensely popular internationally and worldwide, partly fuelled by widely shared ‘National Days’, National Pabebe Wave Day being one such example.

Importance Of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

    It encourages self-care

Breast Cancer Awareness Month encourages women that annual breast cancer screenings should be a routine component of self-care. If youve never done a self-exam before, ask your doctor or nurse practitioner for help. Dimpling, redness, scaliness, or nipple discharge are all signs that something is wrong with your breast. Granted, some breasts are more lumpy than others, but any changes in size or tissue should prompt you to schedule an appointment with your doctor.

    It concentrates on treatment

Breast cancer can come in a variety of forms. The stage and kind of cancer, as well as the patients age and overall condition at the time of diagnosis, as well as the patients personal and family history, all influence treatment options. Following a diagnosis, a patient should talk with their family to find a doctor who can discuss treatment options such as surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation.
