Communicate With Your Surgeon
Surgeons will discuss the shape, size, surface texture, placement of the implant, and the incision site for each person. Ask your surgeon questions about their experience in performing breast implant surgeries, the surgical procedure, and the ways the implant might affect your life.
Tell your surgeon about previous surgeries and your bodys response. For example, discuss whether surgeries resulted in a more than expected amount of scar tissue. Also, discuss your expectations. These discussions will help you and the surgeon make decisions that achieve the desired appearance, including decisions about incision location and size, as well as implant size, material, texture, and placement.
Many patients have additional operations to change implant size. To achieve the best results after the first procedure, careful planning and reasonable expectations are necessary.
Breast Implant Illness Is As Complex As It Is Controversial
Then theres the more perplexing symptoms some people report feeling immediately after surgery or years later, such as fatigue, brain fog, rashes, GI issues, hair loss, anxiety, depression, weight changes, and muscle pain. Some, particularly those with predisposing risk factors or an existing condition, end up being diagnosed with autoimmune diseases, such as inflammatory arthritis, lupus, systemic sclerosis, and Sjögrens syndrome.
Clinicians call this breast implant illness or autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants . While some healthcare professionals believe BII is a specific disease, others arent convinced its real. Yet many patients, including celebrities Ayesha Curry, Crystal Hefner,Ashley Tisdale, and Yolanda Hadid, reported feeling relief from these symptoms immediately after their implants were removed.
BII is not currently recognized as a diagnosable medical condition and is generally not well understood. In a 2021 review, two researchers called it the most controversial subject in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery.
But ultimately my job as a plastic surgeon is to make my patients feel and look their best and if thats a result of that interaction, then I think its a worthwhile endeavor, he added.
How A Relatively Unknown Condition Caused By Breast Implants Turned An Aussie Mums Life Upside Down
From research into more common implant conditions, such as breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma , Deva said we know that squamous cell cancers usually arise after many decades of inflammation driving the immune system, and eventually the cells become malignant.
In 2019, the TGA removed a number of breast implants from the market to try and reduce the risk of BIA-ALCL.
The TGA is monitoring the occurrence of the disease in Australia and is in communication with other international regulators and experts in Australia, The TGA said.
The TGA strongly encourages you to report all problems associated with medical devices, including breast implants. Your reports help us monitor the performance and safety of medical devices.

Do Breast Implants Increase Your Risk For Other Types Of Cancer
Theres no evidence that breast implants raise the risk of developing any other types of cancer. This includes breast cancer.
A meta-analysis of observational studies published in 2015 examined the risk of breast cancer developing in women with cosmetic breast implants. They found no increased risk.
There is a question about breast cancer recurrence.
A 2020 assessed breast cancer outcomes according to types of implants used for reconstruction following mastectomy. Findings suggest there may be a link between textured implants and higher risk of breast cancer relapse. The researchers said more studies are needed, though.
Why Are Breast Implants Linked To Cancer

Its actually not known at this point. The incidence, etiology, and risk factors for developing squamous cell carcinoma and non-BIA-ALCL lymphomas related to breast cancers remains unclear although some theories exist for its development, says Sameer A. Patel, M.D., chief of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
One major theory is that the tissue around the implant and capsule can become inflamed, causing fluid to build up and damage the cells. That can cause cancer to develop in the fluid. If things progress, the cancer enters the capsule and can invade other tissues, including lymph nodes, from there.
Another theory is that the silicone or polyurethane material in the implant may cause a persons immune system to overreact, leading to a toxic chain reaction that can eventually lead to cancer.
This is not breast cancerthats an important distinction, says , M.D., breast surgical oncologist and Director of the Margie Petersen Breast Center at Providence Saint Johns Center and Associate Professor of Surgery at Saint Johns Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, Calif. This is a reactive type of disease. The body recognizes something in it thats not you and overreacts.

Monitor Your Breast Implants
In general, follow your surgeons instructions on how to monitor your breast implants.
If you notice any unusual signs or symptoms, report them promptly to your surgeon or health care provider. Health care providers and patients are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of these products to the FDA’s MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.
Also, follow your health care providers instructions for imaging for screening for breast cancer as this may be different for those patients who had breast augmentation and for those patients who had breasts reconstruction. If you are making an appointment for mammography, inform the mammography facility that you have breast implants, and ask them what you can expect regarding mammography with breast implants.
Your surgeon or health care provider may also recommend other tests, such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging . The FDA recommends that patients with silicone implants get regular screenings to detect silent ruptures.
If you have specific questions about breast implants, ask your surgeon or health care provider.
The Inevitable Deterioration Of Implants
Deva has long-advocated for annual implant screenings to be offered as follow-ups from the surgeon, on top of the monthly checks that all women are encouraged to perform on themselves.
He says living with breast implants requires ongoing attention and is not as glamorous as some people might think.
Obviously when you look at women even a year after surgery, theyre very happy, it looks good and everyone thinks they look amazing.
In reality, about 10 or 11 years later the picture is a bit different. They dont look so good, and certainly if theyve had one or two children, things dont look so good at all. So, its a bit of a reality check with the more commercially-driven images that we see.

Know The Risks Of Breast Implants
FDA-approved implants undergo extensive testing before approval to demonstrate reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness. Still, there are risks associated with all breast implants, including:
- Additional surgeries
- Rupture of saline and silicone gel-filled implants
- Deflation of saline-filled implants
- Silent rupture of silicone gel-filled implants
The silicone used for breast implants is different than injectable silicone. Injectable silicone is not FDA-approved for breast augmentation, breast reconstruction, or for body contouring.
Which Breast Implants Are Linked To Cancer
Because of the large number of breast implants on the market, those who have undergone breast augmentation or breast reconstruction surgery may be concerned about which types of breast implants are linked to cancer.
Upon its review of various data, the FDA found that breast implants with textured surfaces produced by Allergan may be linked to cancer. Specifically, the textured implants raised concerns of an increased risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma . While one might assume that BIA-ALCL is a breast cancer, it is not it is actually a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Based on the FDAs assessment of the available data, whether the textured implants are made with silicone or saline was not a risk factor for BIA-ALCL. The FDA also noted that there are safe alternatives to textured implants.
Not to be confused with breast cancer, BIA-ALCL the type of cancer linked to textured breast implants is a rare form of lymphoma that attacks the immune system.
Unlike breast cancer which forms in the breast tissue, BIA-ALCL forms in the scar tissue capsule which develops around the breast implant. Usually, BIA-ALCL is found in the scar tissue and fluid close to the implant. However, it can in some cases spread throughout the body. While the risk of developing BIA-ALCL is low, it is a serious and potentially deadly disease.

Have You Developed Symptoms
The most common symptoms are unexplained breast enlargement, asymmetry, fluid buildup or a lump in the breast or armpit, but may be rarely more subtle such as overlying skin rash, hardening of the breast. Women who develop these symptoms should see their physician to be evaluated with a physical exam and further testing.
Fda Warns Of Cancer Risk In Scar Tissue Around Breast Implants
Sharon Worcester, MA
The US Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety alert, warning of a rare but concerning potential risk of squamous cell carcinoma and various lymphomas in the scar tissue around breast implants.
The FDA safety communication is based on several dozen reports of these cancers occurring in the capsule or scar tissue around breast implants. This issue differs from breast implant-associated anaplastic large-cell lymphoma a known risk among implant recipients.
“After preliminary review of published literature as part of our ongoing monitoring of the safety of breast implants, the FDA is aware of less than 20 cases of SCC and less than 30 cases of various lymphomas in the capsule around the breast implant,” the agency’s alert explains.
One avenue through which the FDA has identified cases is via medical device reports. As of September 1, the FDA has received 10 medical device reports about SCC related to breast implants and 12 about various lymphomas.
The incidence rate and risk factors for these events are currently unknown but reports of SCC and various lymphomas in the capsule around the breast implants have been reported for both textured and smooth breast implants, and for both saline and silicone breast implants. In some cases, the cancers were diagnosed years after breast implant surgery.
Reported signs and symptoms included swelling, pain, lumps, or skin changes.

Fda Uncovers More Types Of Cancer Linked To Breast Implants
The Food and Drug Administration is warning that breast implants are linked to certain cancers that can develop in the scar tissue that forms around the implants.
The FDA issued the warning in a safety communication, noting that these cancers are different from Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma , a form of cancer linked to breast implants that the agency has previously warned about.
The cancers flagged by the FDA, which include squamous cell carcinoma and different cancers of the immune system , are linked to all types of implants, whether theyre smooth or textured, or filled with saline or silicone. The cancers form in the scar tissue around the implant, which is known as the capsule.
This isnt the first time breast implants have been linked to cancer: In 2019, the FDA asked for a recall of textured implants made by Allergan after they were linked to nearly 600 cases and 33 deaths.
The newly-flagged cancers seem to be rare: The FDA says that a preliminary review of scientific literature turned up less than 20 cases of squamous cell carcinoma and less than 30 cases of lymphomas in the capsule around the breast implant. The FDA says it will continue to gather and review all available data about cancers in the capsule around breast implants.
If you have breast implants or are considering implants, its understandable to have concerns. Heres what you need to know.
Risks Of Illness From Breast Implants

In the past, there were concerns about possible health issues from ruptured silicone-filled implants, such as connective tissue disease, breast cancer, or reproductive problems. So far, studies show that silicone implants do not increase the risk of these health problems. Some people with breast implants may have symptoms of joint pain, memory loss, or fatigue. It is not clear if these symptoms are related to the breast implants and more research is being done.

Mums Urgent Warning After Suffering Years Of Terrifying Symptoms From Common Surgery
Ultrasound imaging is recommended for people with breast implants as early as three years after the procedure, Deva said.
In terms of the cases reported to the FDA, Deva says these women have been exposed to breast implants for a very long time, ranging from 10 years to 50 years, and they probably should have been removed.
The follow-ups help the patients but they also help the surgeon, Deva said, adding that regularly revisiting his work allows for a better understanding of how the implants have held up for various patients through childbirth, weight loss and gain, and menopause.
So Id encourage my colleagues to start doing that, if theyre not already.
How Common Are Cases Of Patients Developing Lymphoma From Breast Implants
Breast implants can have a smooth or rough-textured shell. Textured breast implants are associated with BIA-ALCL, a cancer of the immune system. The FDA has quantified the risk from 1 in 3,000 patients to up to 1 in 30,000 patients. The risk of this lymphoma likely depends on the specific manufacturer of a textured implant and, in some cases, may be lower than these estimates.
Its important to know that so far there are no confirmed cases of BIA-ALCL worldwide in individuals who have only ever had smooth breast implants.

Breast Implants Are Linked To Several Cancers Fda Warns
The Food and Drug Administration warned on September 8 that people with breast implants filled with silicone or saline could raise the possibility of specific cancer types such as squamous cell carcinoma and various lymphomas in the scar tissue around implants.
The FDA has confirmed that it had received ten reports of SCC, and 12 reports of the different types of lymphoma. Less than 50 cases of SCC and different lymphomas were found in the scar tissue around the implant, according to a literature review by the agency.
Reported symptoms from patients include swelling, pain, lumps, or changes in the skin. According to the FDA report, there is no need to get your implants checked or removed if you don’t have any of these symptoms.
Breast Implants Linked To Cases Of Cancer According To Fda
More women have been diagnosed with a deadly lymphoma caused by textured breast implants, according to a report released Wednesday from the Food and Drug Administration.
In a statement, the FDAs Dr. Binita Ashar said there are now 457 women in the U.S. diagnosed with breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma , up from 414 cases in the last report. There have been more than 600 cases of BIA-ALCL, a cancer of the immune system, reported worldwide. Sixteen women have died, nine in the U.S.
We hope that this information prompts providers and patients to have important, informed conversations about breast implants and the risk of BIA-ALCL, Dr. Ashar said in the statement.
The new report comes one day before French regulatory authorities are scheduled to meet to discuss the safety of textured implants, which are used in cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries and account for 85 percent of the French market. The majority of ALCL cases have been linked to the textured devices. In December, Frances National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products asked Allergan to recall its textured implants after the agency pulled its safety approval.
That recall followed an NBC News investigation, in conjunction with the ICIJ, finding that ALCL could be more common than previously thought.
ALCL patients, who have been fighting to raise more awareness of disease, applaud the FDAs efforts to better inform physicians.

Breast Implants Becoming Health Concern
People with breast implants have been warned to watch out for symptoms after the implants were linked to a rare cancer by US regulators.
The US Food and Drug Administration has linked the implants to squamous cell carcinoma , prompting Australias Therapeutic Goods Administration to urge those who have had the implants to routinely monitor their breast implants and consult their implanting surgeon if they have any concerns.

Macquarie University professor and leading surgical academic specialising in breast implant health Anand Deva told 7NEWS.com.au that the recorded cases had mostly occurred in older implants.
But he said the majority of women are walking around with no idea of these risks, and warned of the dangers that can come from the procedure without regular checkups afterwards.
About 20,000 Australians get breast implants each year, Deva told 7NEWS.com.au.
However, reports of SCC linked to breast implants are rare.
Fewer than 20 cases of squamous cell carcinoma were reported to the FDA, which the regulatory body said is forming in scar tissue surrounding the implants.
Symptoms of these conditions can include swelling, pain, lumps, or skin changes. However, it is important to note that these symptoms can also reflect other breast health issues, the TGA said.
Deva said the concern with SCCs was that theyre quite aggressive.
