There have been numerous critiques of NBCAM over the years. Among others, there is the reification of survivorship, the belief that screening mammograms are the ultimate answer to the breast cancer problem, the overt commercialization of the disease and more recently, the feminization of breast cancer through stereotyping, trivialization, and the objectification of women.
Survivorship
The cancer survivor is a label and an identity common in cancer culture. According to the National Cancer Institute Office of Cancer Survivorship, a person is considered a cancer survivor at the time of cancer diagnosis and remains so for the remainder of his or her life. Contrary to the everyday meaning of survival , many cancer survivors do not actually survive cancer. People with cancer that has spread to distant organs face life-long treatment and a progressive disease that is, currently, incurable.
We might not die right awaywe might suffer through treatments for a while, but eventually, nearly all of us will die of our disease, and 100% of us will die with our disease, because it is incurable. So, how can I be a survivor of cancer? How can you survive something that will eventually kill you?
Focusing on survivorship, while well-intentioned, masks the suffering and hardship of cancer and treatment on individuals, families, and communities.

What Are The Symptoms And Signs Of Breast Cancer
Although rare, men also get breast cancer. By 2022, an estimated 2,720 men in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 530 men will die from breast cancer.
The DOH reports that breast cancer remains the leading cancer among women in the state and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in New Mexico. Her 1,512 women will be diagnosed with cancer in New Mexico this year, and unfortunately, an estimated 279 women will die from breast cancer in the state.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer has several different symptoms, and some people have no symptoms at all. However, there are common risk factors such as:

- Having changes in your BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes

Early detection is key. The National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services , helps low-income, uninsured, and under-served women gain access to lifesaving screening services for early detection of breast and cervical cancers. This program provides clinical breast examinations, mammograms, and Pap tests for participants as well as diagnostic testing for women whose screening outcome is abnormal. Women age 40 and above should talk to their doctors about when and how often to get a mammogram. Most Common Cancer In Ontario Women
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Ontario women. It is estimated that about 11,762 Ontario women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and about 1,977 Ontario women will die from the disease in 2018. However, in women between the ages of 50 and 69, one death is prevented for every 721 women who get screened regularly with mammograms over a period of time . In Ontario, over two million women ages 50 to 74 are eligible to be screened by the OBSP.
The Ontario Breast Screening Program provides high-quality breast screening throughout Ontario to two groups of women:
- Most women ages 50 to 74 are screened every two years with mammography.
- Women ages 30 to 69 who are confirmed to be at high risk of getting breast cancer are screened once a year with a mammogram and breast magnetic resonance imaging .
Since 1990, there has been a considerable decrease in the death rate from breast cancer in women ages 50 to 74, says Dr. Jan Owen, Regional Primary Care Lead for the South West Regional Cancer Program. This decrease is likely due to improvements in breast cancer treatment and more women getting screened with mammograms. Although mammograms are not perfect tests, getting screened for breast cancer regularly can find cancer early when it may be smaller and easier to treat.
