Every person will experience different symptoms of breast cancer, and some may not experience any signs at all. Some signs of breast cancer, according to the CDC include:

What Is A Mammogram And Why Is It Important

A mammogram is an x-ray photo of the breast and is the most common and effective way to screen for early signs of breast cancer. Regular screenings for breast cancer are vital since early detection allows for more treatment options and a higher chance of survival. According to the Carol Milgard Breast Center, approximately 1 in 8 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer. Women whose breast cancer is detected early have a 93% higher survival rate in the first five years of diagnosis.

Can I Get A Mammogram If I Have Breast Implants

Yes. If you have breast implants, you should still get regular screening mammograms as recommended. Be sure to inform them when scheduling your appointment. The implants can make it more difficult for the doctor to detect breast cancer, so more pictures are taken during the screening mammogram. If you have had both or one breast removed before getting an implant, you typically wonât need a mammogram on the reconstructed breast.

How To Make An Appointment

We will work to accommodate your schedule when you make an appointment. We offer Saturday and evening hours for added convenience. We strive to find just the right fit for you whether its the first opening available or the last appointment of the day.

• Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
• Saturdays by appointment
• Schedulers are available 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

• Schedule it a week after your menstrual cycle
• Let us know if you are nursing, pregnant, or might be pregnant
• Let us know if you have breast implants
• Tell us if you have any breast health complaints, concerns or family history of breast cancer
• Be prepared to tell us if and where you have had previous mammograms, breast surgeries or breast biopsies
• Have your insurance card and the name of your current primary health care provider

Preparing for Registration

We look forward to helping you register for your appointment at the breast center as quickly and efficiently as possible. Patients should bring a photo identification and current insurance card with them to all exams. If you have a written referral , please bring this as well.

Agenda For The Day Of Your Consultation:

• Meet with a staff member to review your completed documents and take your vital signs.

• Meet with the radiation oncologist who will examine you, review your history, discuss treatment options, and answer your questions.

• Meet with our Medical Assistant who will provide you with information regarding your insurance plan and radiation therapy services.

• You will also have an opportunity to meet with our Center Manager who will provide additional information about the Cancer Center and give you a tour of the facility if you would like.

What Age Should I Get A Mammogram

In general, women at the age of 40 should consider beginning annual screening mammograms. By age 45, it is recommended every woman start yearly screenings while women 55 and older should either continue with annual screening or switch to biennial screeningâonce every two years. It is important to consult with your doctor when the right time to start screening is for you.

Types Of Radiation Therapy Used For Breast Cancer

There are two main types of radiation therapy that are used to treat breast cancer: external beam and internal radiation therapy. The type of radiation therapy that you may have depends on various factors including your age, the type of surgery you had, the stage of your breast cancer, and whether it has spread to other parts of your body.

Can I Get A Mammogram If Im Pregnant

Yes. However, regular screening mammography is not conducted on pregnant women without symptoms. During pregnancy, your breasts undergo many changes that make it difficult to detect breast cancer. If you are experiencing symptoms of breast cancer and are pregnant, it is generally safe to have one since the radiation level is low and is only exposed to your breasts. A lead shield is placed on the belly for extra protection as well.

You will not be able to schedule your screening mammogram within 11 months of your last screening mammogram appointment. The Rainiers Support CMBC Pink Day Benefit Game to Provide Mammogram Funding for Tacomas Underserved Women

TACOMA, Wash.—-In addition to playing baseball last Sunday, May 8, the Tacoma Rainiers went to bat for the Carol Milgard Breast Center by sponsoring a fundraiser benefit game called Pink at the Park to promote heightened awareness for annual mammograms and to raise money to provide breast cancer screening services at the Carol Milgard Breast Center for Tacomas underserved women.

The Tacoma Rainiers played the Mothers Day game wearing pink baseball jerseys to celebrate the fight against breast cancer, and post game, their fans bid on their favorite players autographed jersey during a live Pink Jersey Benefit Auction. The proceeds received from this auction will provide underserved Tacoma women the ability to receive a free screening mammogram at the Carol Milgard Breast Center.

Breast cancer survivors and community womens health groups attending the benefit game donned pink in support of breast cancer awareness. The unveiling of a heartfelt Carol Milgard Breast Center patient story about her breast cancer diagnosis experience captured the crowds attention and alerted them to the importance of early detection that only an annual screening mammogram can provide.

What Is The Carol Milgard Breast Center

The Carol Milgard Breast Center was named to honor the spirit of Carol Milgard, a long-time Tacoma resident, philanthropist and 30-year breast cancer survivor.

Carols own experience compelled the family to support the breast center. They saw the importance of helping launch a state-of-the-art facility that offered a welcome and nurturing space for the patients who would be using the facility.

For decades, people have been inspired by Carol to reach higher to make the community a better place for our children to give back in order to fully receive what we ourselves have been given. Carol understood the importance of truly appreciating the hard work, dedication and loyalty of the people around her.

Tips For Preparing For A Mammogram

Mammograms are conducted in breast clinics, hospital radiology departments, private radiology offices, and doctorâs offices. Below are some tips on how to best prepare for a mammogram:

• Go to the same facility every year or bring the images from your last mammogram to the upcoming one
• Schedule when breasts are less tender
• Plan accordingly as mammograms usually take 30 minutes to complete

Breast Reconstruction After Radiation Therapy

For patients who receive radiation after surgery, breast reconstruction is usually best left until the radiation treatments are complete. This avoids any unnecessary impact on your healthy breast tissue and any breast implants. It can also make it more difficult to target that area of the breast. Your oncology team will recommend when they feel youre far enough along in recovery to undergo breast reconstruction surgery.

Factors That Increase Risk Of Breast Cancer

Factors like family history, personal history, radiation exposure, weight, race/ethnicity, diet, alcohol consumption, and menstrual history can increase your risk of breast cancer.

Dr. Melissa Frankel MD, a radiologist specializing in breast imaging at the Cleveland Clinic, recommends that âwomen should get a baseline screening mammogram between the age of 35 and 39 with routine yearly mammograms starting at the age of 40â and that âif you have a genetically proven increased risk of breast cancer, then you should consider getting a yearly mammogram starting at the age of 30.â

About 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be hereditary. Regular monitoring or preventive surgery are options to discuss with your doctor if you are at risk of hereditary breast cancer. Deciding to get genetic testing for one of these genes is a personal decision and should be thoughtfully considered.
