There are many treatment options for people with breast cancer, but treatment depends greatly on the specifics of each case. One defining characteristic of a persons breast cancer includes their stage.
Patients come to me all the time asking, What is the stage of my cancer?’ Dr. Comen said. Stage is kind of an old way of thinking about how we treat breast cancer. But, yet, it is still one of the ways that we put patients into categories to figure out the types of treatments that may be available to them.
Thanks to advancements in cancer research, todays treatment options depend on much more than just stage. Doctors also consider the hormones, biology and genetics involved with each case to determine the best course of treatment.
When it comes to deciding the type of treatment that a woman needs, its not just the size of the tumor and how many lymph nodes are involved and the stage, she explained. Its really also the biology. Is it hormone receptor positive? Is this a cancer that we probably need chemotherapy for? Or maybe we dont need chemotherapy for.

What Is The Most Aggressive Type Of Breast Cancer
Triple-negative breast cancer is considered an aggressive cancer because it grows quickly, is more likely to have spread at the time it’s found and is more likely to come back after treatment than other types of breast cancer. The outlook is generally not as good as it is for other types of breast cancer.
What Stage Of Cancer Does Julia Louis
In 2017, Louis-Dreyfus announced she was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer, and later underwent six rounds of chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, before revealing a year later she was in remission. Breast Cancer: The Facts
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the world.
The rates of breast cancer vary from country to country – about one in eight women will get breast cancer during their lifetime in the US and the UK.
About 55,000 people are diagnosed with the condition in the UK every year – about 150 people a day. It is far more common among women, affecting just one in every 870 men.
Medical experts recommend women be aware of what their breasts normally look and feel like, so they can be aware of any abnormal changes.
Possible signs of breast cancer include:
- Changes in the outline or shape of the breast, especially those caused by arm movements or by lifting the breast
- Changes in the look or feel of the skin, such as puckering or dimpling
- Any new lumps, thickening or bumpy areas in one breast or armpit, with or without pain, that differs from the same part of the other breast and armpit
- Discharge from the nipple
- Moist, red areas on the nipple that don’t heal easily
- Any change in nipple position, such as being pulled in or pointing differently
- A rash on or around the nipple
Recovery chances are good if the cancer is discovered in its early stages. Breast screening programmes use a mammogram – a type of X-ray – to sweep for small cancers in their infancy.
When Should You Get A Mastectomy
As part of her treatment path, Louis-Dreyfus had a double mastectomy, which means she had both breasts removed as a way to prevent the spread of her cancer.
A mastectomy may involve the removal of one or both breasts, either partially or completely. Dr. Ann Partridge, an oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, explains the considerations to take into account when deciding whether or not to get a mastectomy to treat breast cancer.

So when I talk to a woman who comes to me and she has breast cancer, I evaluate what the standard options for treatment for her are, which typically include cutting out the cancer which is either a lumpectomy if you can get it all with just a little scooping around of the area thats abnormal or a mastectomy for some women meaning taking the full breast because sometimes these lesions can be very extensive in the breast, says Dr. Partridge.

And Ill talk to a woman about that and Ill say these are two main options or the big fork in the road. Depending on the size and other features, such as family history, a patient may opt for more aggressive surgery, she says. And so even for early-stage one breast cancer, a woman may elect a mastectomy to remove her whole breast. Sometimes, this is something thats done prophylactically, meaning a woman just has a high risk of breast cancer in their family.

What Is Stage 2 Beast Cancer
To better understand Louis-Dreyfus cancer diagnosis, its important to talk about what stage means for breast cancer patients.
Stage really refers to how big a tumor is and how many lymph nodes are involved, Dr. Elizabeth Comen, a medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, previously told SurvivorNet.
More specifically, Louis-Dreyfus had stage 2 cancer.
When a woman has Stage 2 breast cancer, it means that the tumors probably bigger than 2 cm and/or she has lymph nodes involved, Dr. Comen explained. And if she has lymph nodes involved, she probably doesnt have that many lymph nodes involved. Because if you have more lymph nodes, like 10, 11, 12, then that might be referred to as Stage 3 cancer.

Does Anyone Survive Breast Cancer
The average 5-year survival rate for women with non-metastatic invasive breast cancer is 90%. The average 10-year survival rate for women with non-metastatic invasive breast cancer is 84%. If the invasive breast cancer is located only in the breast, the 5-year survival rate of women with this disease is 99%.

When Veep came to a halt after its sixth season so that Louis-Dreyfus could begin treatment for breast cancer, the comedian decided to via Instagram: “1 in 8 women get breast cancer. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is reflecting on the end of her critically acclaimed HBO series, Veep.
ET’s Kevin Frazier spoke with the 58-year-old actress on the 2019 Emmys red carpet on Sunday, and she explained what made the last season of Veep so special. Louis-Dreyfus announced she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2017, and filmed the last season after undergoing multiple rounds of chemotherapy.
“The last season of the show was the most meaningful to me, to come back to the show after walking through my illness, and focus on making the best possible show ever and having that kind of agenda — priority — it was sublime,” she tells ET.
She also said that battling breast cancer definitely gave her a new appreciation for getting to celebrate the show at the annual awards show. The actress has won six consecutive Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for playing Vice President turned President Selina Meyer, and is nominated twice at this year’s Emmys.
“I am so grateful to be here,” she says.
As for Veep already coming to an end, she says the cast is still as close as ever.
“Yes, we stay in touch all the time, we get together a lot, and we’ll never let each other go,” she shares. “That’s the truth.”
“She’ll always be a part of me,” she adds of her character, Selina Meyer. “She’ll never leave me. I love playing that woman.”

Crucial Role For Family And Friends
Louis-Dreyfus would later reveal the crucial role that her family and friends – especially her castmates at Veep – played in keeping her spirits up as she battled the disease. In one instance, Timothy Simons and Tony Hale made a lip-sync video that depicted the latter as their colleague literally beating the cancer.
Anna Chlumsky, who portrays Louis-Dreyfus’ character’s chief of staff revealed that it was a tough balancing act between being there for their friend and remaining on the right side of the line separating what is proper and what is not.
“I think there’s a bit of navigating what’s appropriate,”the actress told PEOPLE magazine at the time. “There was this sense of, ‘how do I connect without being invasive?'” The best advice was from her own father, who had himself fought and overcome cancer. “Just be there. Just say something,” he told her. “You just want people to be there.”
Having come through the other side, Louis-Dreyfus felt indebted for this kind of support. “I was surrounded by people who were supporting me,” she reflected. “That was hugely meaningful, and I needed it. The news comes less than two weeks after the Veep star won a sixth consecutive Emmy for comedy acting.
A native New Yorker of French stock, Louis-Dreyfus has been one of Americas most popular and influential comedy actors since she found fame with cult sitcom Seinfeld in the 1990s.
On Veep she plays a somewhat bumbling vice president who later becomes the acting president, despite her hapless staff making political blunders along the way.
She has six consecutive best actor Emmys for Veep as well as three as an executive producer when it was awarded best comedy series.
She has won in the past for her roles on Seinfeld — which also earned her a Golden Globe — and The New Adventures of Old Christine.

In that moment, Louis-Dreyfus experienced a singularity of focus and determination she had never felt before. “I remember very vividly there was a ladder and I was just hell-bent on that ladder, getting to that ladder. I was focused on the ladder. I didn’t look around me or anythingI was just getting to the ladder. And that’s what this experience was exactly like for me,” she shared.

Actress Julia Louis Dreyfus Reveals She Has Breast Cancer
HBO said in a statement that the actress learned of her diagnosis the day after the 69th annual Emmys, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Julia is incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support and well wishes, the actress’ representatives said in a statement to NBC News.
Louis-Dreyfus’ political satire “Veep” is slated to end its run after its seventh season wraps next year. HBO, which airs the comedy, said in its statement it would continue shooting as scheduled and make adjustments when needed.
“Your undaunted spirit has always been an inspiration to your family at HBO. Sending our love and support,” HBO wrote in a tweet.
Armando Iannucci, the show’s creator, tweeted on Thursday shortly after the announcement.
“It is possible to be dignified and fierce at the same time. I, and millions others, send Julia our love and support,” he wrote.
Co-star Tony Hale also sent his well-wishes. Sharing Louis-Dreyfus’ tweet, he added, “We love this woman.”
