Taking Collagen After Breast Cancer

What Is Bovine Collagen

Mayo Clinic Explains Breast Cancer

Bovine collagen comes from cows preferably grass-fed cows.

There are 3 various sorts of collagen: collagen I, II, as well as III. Each type of collagen sustains various parts of the body. In bovine collagen made from hide, youll normally locate types I and also III which operate in similar ways to support skin, bones, muscular tissues, tendons, as well as intestine health and wellness.

If you acquire a bovine collagen supplement made from cartilage, connective tissues, or bones, this supplement must additionally have collagen kind II which assists support joint health in particular.

Mayo Clinic Minute: Are Supplements Safe For Cancer Patients

If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer, you may be considering taking herbal and dietary supplements to help strengthen your immune system and ease the symptoms of cancer treatment.

But are supplements safe when you have cancer?

Journalists: Broadcast-quality video pkg is in the downloads at the end of the post. Please “Courtesy: Mayo Clinic News Network.” Read the script.

If you’re diagnosed with cancer, you should be careful what supplements you’re taking.

“Oftentimes, the first thing I do is look through the list of supplements and start to discontinue many of the supplements that they are taking because perhaps there’s a drug interaction,” says Dr. Dawn Mussallem, a Mayo Clinic internal medicine specialist.

While research on the topic is limited, some studies suggest that ginger can be beneficial.

“Ginger is something we can consider delivering to our patients when they come in with that question: ‘What else can I do for my chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting?'” says Dr. Mussallem.

Many patients experience cancer-related fatigue, often a side effect of treatment. American ginseng can help. But there are risks for some patients.

“It is believed that some products of American ginseng may have some estrogenic properties,” says Dr. Mussallem. “So women who have hormone receptor-positive breast cancers … I generally try to avoid long duration of American ginseng in these women.”

Answer: Supplements For Surgery

Omega 3 fats , NSAID’s , Vitamin E, “blood thinners” and a whole host of supplements and medicines can cause excessive bleeding and bruising and therefore increase your recovery time. When in doubt stay away from supplements unless they are designed for surgery. I offer to my patients specific supplements that speed healing, reduce swelling, bruising and in some cases minimize discomfort (for example Bromelain, Arnica Montanum, and Vitamins designed for surgery.Bottom Line: Certain vitamins and minerals can speed healing others can cause problems and slow the process down or cause complications. If healing is going well I usually let my patients go back to their usual regimen of supplementsCheck with your doctor as only your doctor would have access to your medical history and what would be best for you. We typically allow our patients to continue their supplements 10 days post op if their recovery is going well.

AIs, tamoxifen, and fulvestrant can be used to treat more advanced hormone-positive breast cancers, especially in post-menopausal women. They are often continued for as long as they are helpful. Pre-menopausal women might be offered tamoxifen alone or an AI in combination with an LHRH agonist for advanced disease.

How Does Hormone Therapy Work

Breast Cancer Survivors & Vaginal Health

About 2 out of 3 breast cancers are hormone receptor-positive. Their cells have receptors for estrogen and/or progesterone which help the cancer cells grow and spread.

There are several types of hormone therapy for breast cancer. Most types of hormone therapy either lower estrogen levels in the body or stop estrogen from helping breast cancer cells grow.

Collagen 1 Promotes Basal Calcium Influx And Regulates Cell Survival Through A Calcium

We have already reported that extracellular Ca2+ regulates breast cancer cell survival and proliferation , we examined whether the variation of extracellular Ca2+ concentrations could affect the collagen-dependent survival. The cell viability was analysed after 48 h FCS-starvation. As expected, in 1.8 mM o collagen 1 decreased cell mortality in MCF-7 and T-47D cells . However, it failed to decrease the cell mortality in low Ca2+ conditions in both cell lines . Indeed, under low calcium conditions, collagen 1-induced cell mortality was increased compared to physiologic calcium conditions in both cell lines . Then, we investigated whether collagen 1 induced Ca2+ entry that we analysed through Mn2+ quenching of fura-2 fluorescence. Addition of Mn2+ decreased the fura-2 fluorescence in a time-dependent manner revealing a Mn2+ influx through plasma membrane Ca2+ channels . Our results showed an increased Mn2+ quenching by 5.7 and 11.5 folds in MCF-7 and 1.74 and 2.02 folds in T47-D cells cultured on collagen 1 for 24 h and 48 h post-starvation respectively . Altogether, our results showed that the collagen 1 promotes BC cell survival through a Ca2+-dependent pathway.

Early Onset Breast Cancer: Risk Reduction and Warning Signs

Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the intra-observer and inter-observer discordance of feature determination. To ensure reproducibility, inter-observer correlation coefficients of the TACSs determined by the three observers were calculated. To assess the intra-observer discordance, we randomly selected MPM images of 30 patients for TACS feature extraction. Each panelist performed the extraction for 10 patients and repeated the same steps a week later. The mean intra-observer and inter-observer agreement of the TACS feature extraction among three panelists were 0.921 and 0.857 . An ICC value of > 0.8 is considered as highly consistent.

Can I Take Hrt During Or After Breast Cancer Treatment

If youve had breast cancer, you may have been told that HRT is too risky.

Emeritus Clinical Professor of Medicine and breast cancer specialist, Dr Avrum Bluming, has spent nearly two decades investigating the risks and benefits of HRT specifically administered to women with a history of breast cancer. Not only a leading cancer specialist, Bluming has a highly personal interest here too. His own wife and daughter had breast cancer and both decided to take HRT.

The lowest risk form of HRT for women who have had breast cancer or are currently undergoing treatment is local vaginal estrogen. This is used to treat menopausal symptoms that affect the vagina . The estrogen only reaches the surrounding tissues and doesnt get into the bloodstream. There is no evidence to suggest this type of HRT increases a womens risk of cancer recurrence. Healthcare professionals can usually safely prescribe this to women with active breast cancer, including ER-positive breast cancers.

Taking Supplements During Breast Cancer Treatment Increases Risk Of Death And Relapse What Does This Mean For Patients

A new study found that people with breast cancer who take supplements have a poorer survival rate … and a larger chance of relapse than those who don’t.

Last month a study of over 1,000 people with breast cancer found some worrying evidence that certain nutritional supplements could reduce the chance of survival from the disease and increase the chance that the cancer would recur after treatment. The main findings were:

  • Patients who reported taking any antioxidant – vitamins A, C, E and carotenoids and Coenyzme Q10 – were 41 percent more likely to have their breast cancer return when they took the supplements both before and during chemotherapy treatment
  • Patients had a similar, but weaker, increased risk of death when taking those antioxidants
  • Patients taking vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acid supplements were at significantly greater risk of breast cancer recurrence and death
  • Patients taking multivitamins showed no signs of poorer or better outcomes after chemotherapy

The research was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology and led by scientists at the SWOG cancer research institute.

Patients using any antioxidant before and during chemotherapy had an increased risk of their breast cancer returning and, to a lesser degree, had an increased risk of death. Vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acid use was also associated with poorer outcomes, said Christine B. Ambrosone, PhD, of Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and leader of the study.

Can Supplements Prevent Breast Cancer From Coming Back

So far, theres no proof that any vitamin, mineral, or herbal supplement can treat breast cancer or prevent it from coming back.

To date, there are no studies which demonstrate that certain supplements will lower your risk of recurrence, Johnson says. They may help with symptoms, but there isnt enough research to support using them to prevent breast cancer.

But there are other things you can do to lower your risk of breast cancer coming back. Make these lifestyle changes:

  • Eat a healthy diet.

What Is A Good Amount Of Vitamin C To Shoot For Daily Should Someone With Breast Cancer Be Getting More Or Less Vitamin C Than Other People

64. Taking Control of Breast Cancer with Dr. Nalini Chilkov

There is no research evidence to support that a woman with breast cancer would need extra vitamin C, but a healthy diet will provide well beyond the basic recommended dietary allowance for this nutrient. The current RDA for vitamin C is 75 mg per day for women and 90 mg per day for men. There is some evidence that smokers require more vitamin C than non-smokers, and it is recommended that people who smoke get an additional 35 mg of vitamin C per day for best health. Of course, to truly improve health, quitting smoking is the single best thing a current smoker can do! But assuming you dont smoke, 75 mg per day is a good place to start.

Fact Sheet on Vitamin C, adult women get an average of 84 mg of vitamin C per day. This means that if your diet is varied and healthy, and includes plenty of vegetables and fruit the best source of vitamin C you are easily meeting your basic vitamin C needs. Its also worth noting that if you eat a healthy plant-based diet, which is recommended as one of the best ways to get the most cancer risk reduction benefit from your food, you will get a lot of vitamin C as a . According to the NIH, consuming five varied servings of fruits and vegetables a day can provide more than 200 mg of vitamin C daily.

The Influence Of Collagen On Cancer Cell Behavior

Cellular behavior is controlled by cell signal transduction pathways. Cells accept external signals through receptors and transmit them by cascade, which then transform extracellular signals into intracellular signals, causing physiological cellular reactions that regulate biological activities. Collagen, a component of the ECM, also influences cancer cell behavior . Cancer cells reversely reshape collagen to form a reinforcing cell-collagen loop, which gradually fosters cancer progression.

Hormone Therapy For Breast Cancer

Some types of breast cancer are affected by hormones, like estrogen and progesterone. The breast cancer cells have receptors that attach to estrogen and progesterone, which helps them grow. Treatments that stop these hormones from attaching to these receptors are called hormone or endocrine therapy.

Hormone therapy can reach cancer cells almost anywhere in the body and not just in the breast. It’s recommended for women with tumors that are hormone receptor-positive. It does not help women whose tumors don’t have hormone receptors .

Phytoestrogens And Soy: The Debate

What is cancer? What causes cancer and how is it treated?

Phytoestrogens are compounds that have a mild estrogenic effect and are found in whole grains, nuts and seeds, and many other botanicals, fruits and vegetables. These foods are associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer as well as reduced cancer reoccurrence.

The controversy becomes heated in the debate over soy-containing foods. This issue is complex, with some studies showing that eating soy early in life can reduce breast cancer risk. On the other hand, the consumption of concentrated soy extracts showed increased proliferation of breast cancer cells. Finally, other studies show a protective or neutral effect from whole soy foods.

My recommendation for soy is to eat whole soy foods in moderation no more than several servings per week, preferably fermented soy foods such as miso or tempeh. Avoid soy protein isolates and supplements containing concentrated soy isoflavones.

Answer: Use Of Supplements And Collagen After Breast Augmentation

Thank you for the question. Despite your interest in the use of supplements, I do not think that there is any evidence that supplements or of collagen help or hurt” after breast augmentation surgery. On the other hand, I think that you could potentially waste a lot of time, energy, and resources if you were to believe everything you read and/or hear. As far as resuming supplements and/or medications after surgery, patients should follow their plastic surgeon’s recommendations ultimately he said/she knows exactly how you are progressing and is responsible for your care. Best wishes.

Vitamins And Minerals In Your Diet

Most doctors and dieticians recommend following a healthy diet after breast cancer treatment.

Research suggests that a diet high in fruit and vegetables, lean proteins like chicken and fish, and whole grains, and a diet low in refined sugars, fats, red meats, and processed meats may help you live longer. A diet thats high in fiber is also linked to lower risk of breast cancer.

In general, its best to get nutrients from foods rather than supplements, says Kelly Rashid, a registered dietician in Fort Lauderdale, FL, who specializes in oncology nutrition. A nutrient-rich diet can help you get important vitamins and minerals to feel good and boost your health.

Don’t Miss: How Do You Know Breast Cancer Has Spread

Dos And Donts For Estrogen

Breast cancer is not just one disease it comes in many variations.

One of the primary factors in determining the type of breast cancer is the sensitivity of the tumor cells to estrogen. If a breast tumor is hormone-sensitive or estrogen receptor-positive, it means there are specific estrogen receptors on the tumor cells, and when estrogen binds with these receptors, it transfers a message to the cancer cells. Like a lock and key effect, the breast tumor cells are stimulated by estrogen to grow and reproduce. Therefore, one of the main goals of therapy or intervention with hormone-positive cancer is to reduce hormonal stimulation as much as possible.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Lack Of Collagen

Are Collagen Supplements Good or Bad for You?

There aren’t any tell-tale signs of a collagen deficiency, but there is a group of autoimmune conditions called collagen vascular diseases that are autoimmune, which are likely hereditary, per Northwestern Medicine.

Symptoms of a collagen vascular disease include rashes, fatigue, joint pain and muscle weakness and aches. If you think you have collagen vascular disease, visit your doctor for a blood test.
