What Causes Burning In Breast

What do sore breasts with burning sensation & itchy nipples indicates? – Dr. Nanda Rajaneesh

You can develop burning sensation in your breast due to several factors or causal agents. These causal agents can lead to either to a harmless or more serious health condition that needs you to go for medical treatments.

It is important for you to be conversant with the possible factors that can lead to burning sensation in your breast. This can help you to make a decision whether to go for medical treatment or not in case you develop breast pain.

The common causes that may lead to burning sensation in breast include the following:

  • Mastitis
  • You can develop burning sensation in your breast as an effect of mastitis infection. Mastitis infection often affects women who are breastfeeding. However, this infection can affect women who are not even breastfeeding at menopause.

This infection is usually characterized by painful, inflamed, swollen and tenderness of the breast. In lactating women, it causes hard painful lumps inside the mammary glands. Sometimes it can make the milk to come out in clots.

Mastitis infection is caused by a bacterial attack of the breast tissue. Staphylococcus aureus is a known bacterium that causes this infection. The bacteria can enter your breast tissue through cracks on the skin of the breast or through the pores of the nipples.

You can also develop mastitis due to other predisposing factors that include the following:

  • Inflammatory Breast Cancer
  • Neuropathy
  • Pagetâs infection of the breast
  • Mammary duct ectasia
  • Allergic reaction
  • Breast cellulitis
  • Treatment For A Breast Infection

The primary treatment for a breast infection is antibiotics. Youll usually need to take the medication for 10 to 14 days. You can also use mild over-the-counter pain relievers.

Be sure to drink plenty of fluids and get adequate rest to fight the infection. If breastfeeding is a problem, your doctor or lactation consultant can help you adjust your technique. After a couple of weeks, your infection should be cleared up.

How Breast Cancer Pain May Feel

    Sore Breasts Before Your Period

One symptom of premenstrual syndrome is the swelling and tenderness of the breasts. Pain can range in severity, though its usually on the lower end of the spectrum.

What causes it? During the hormonal changes cause by menstruation, oestrogen activates the breast ducts to enlarge and progesterone triggers the milk glands to swell . How can you ease breast pain before your period? If youre finding that over-the-counter painkillers arent working for this cyclical type of breast pain, you should see your GP for more options. Your doctor might recommend diuretics or oral contraceptives to help ease more severe pre-period breast pain.

What Are The Different Types Of Cancer Pain

There are different types of pain associated with cancer. The type of pain you experience can vary depending on the type of cancer you have and the specific way it affects your body. Bone pain is the most common type of discomfort associated with cancer. This happens when a tumor either grows into the bones or starts pressing against them. This is a deep, aching pain and is usually chronic.

Burning pain is also common for those with cancer. In some cases the tumor may be pressing on a nerve, causing a constant burning pain. Other times nerve damage due to surgery or chemotherapy causes this pain. If you had an area of your body removed due to cancer, such as a mastectomy for those with breast cancer, you may experience phantom pain. Phantom pain happens when nerve endings still send pain signals, even though the body part is gone.

Its important to be able to articulate the type of pain that youre feeling to your doctor in order to get the best treatment available. Here are some important terms to know:

What Are The Treatments For Noncyclic Breast Pain

Its more difficult to figure out the best treatment for noncyclic breast pain. Thats because its hard to know exactly where the pain is coming from. In addition, the pain is not hormonal. Treatment will depend on your symptoms, age, and general health. It will also depend on how severe the condition is.

Your healthcare provider will do a physical exam and may order a mammogram. In some cases, a biopsy of the area is also needed. If it is found that the pain is caused by a cyst, then the cyst will be aspirated. This means that a small needle will be used to remove the liquid contents of the cyst. Depending on where the pain starts, treatment may include pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medicines, and compresses.

Can Shoulder Blade Pain Be A Symptom Of Breast Cancer

Pain is not a common symptom of breast cancer. However, breast cancer that has metastasized can sometimes cause shoulder blade pain.

One of the most common locations for breast cancer metastasis is in the bones. Pain can be related to the cancer itself or fractures that happen when bones weaken.

Bladder, prostate, thyroid, uterus, lung, and kidney cancers can also spread to your bones. Lung and kidney cancers are also known to spread to the shoulder joint and shoulder blade.

It is also possible that pain near your right shoulder could be an indication that breast cancer has spread to your liver, because some of the nerve networks around the liver originate from the same nerves that attach near your right shoulder blade.

If youve had breast cancer in the past, and youre now experiencing shoulder pain, its a good idea to see a doctor about it as soon as possible. If it is a cancer relapse, treatment may help slow the cancers growth, relieve your symptoms, and protect your bones.

Yes. If youve had chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery, you may have pain around your shoulder blade because of those treatments.

Some of these causes include mastitis, mammary duct ectasia, breast cellulitis, and neuropathy.

However, cancer of the breast has a symptom of burning sensation in the breast that is associated with other strange symptoms that include a hard lump in breast, redness, tenderness, flattening or dimpling of the nipple.

If your breast develops a feeling of burning sensation, you should not worry but instead visit your doctor to help in diagnosis and treatment.

Signs Of Breast Cancer That Aren’t A Lump

    Paget

For decades, the medical community and the media have waged an effective awareness campaign about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, educating the public about the importance of diligently monitoring their breasts for lumps. And the tactic has worked. Early detection has contributed to a 39 percent decline in breast cancer deaths in women from 1989 to 2015, according to the American Cancer Society. While thats an important step forward, many other abnormalities that may also indicate breast cancer are lesser known and discussed. Some, then, may be led to assume that no lump and no tumor mean no cancer, but that may be a dangerous conclusion to draw.

The majority of the publicity assigned to breast cancer is a lump, and the majority of patients might feel a mass in the breast, but there are definitely other symptoms besides a lump, says Ricardo H. Alvarez, MD, MSc, who leads the Breast Cancer Center Institute at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® . Visual changes may be especially key in helping detect breast cancer early.

You can see a lot of things just by looking at your breasts in the mirror. When your arms are by your side, you don’t always see everything. Put your hands on your hips or raise them up. What Is Breast Burning Sensation

Breast burning sensation, a burning feeling in one or both breasts, can result from a number of causes, including a thermal burn, various diseases, or direct exposure to toxic substances or extreme cold.

Another possible cause of breast burning sensation is neuropathy, or damage to the nerves that relay signals from the breast to the brain and spinal cord. Depending on the cause of the breast burning sensation, it may occur in the breast only or in other areas of the body as well. A burning feeling may be the only symptom experienced or it may be accompanied by tingling and numbness.

The duration and course of breast burning sensation vary widely, depending on the underlying condition. Symptoms caused by a burn often have a sudden onset, whereas breast burning sensation resulting from peripheral neuropathy develops slowly and persists or worsens over time.

Seek immediate medical care ifasudden breast burning sensation is accompanied by chest or pressure difficulty breathing or the feeling of a tight band around your chest, as these can be symptoms of heart attack.

If your breast burning sensation is persistent or causes you concern, seek prompt medical care.

This Woman Had Burning Breast Pain But 4 Doctors Told Her ‘breast Cancer Doesn’t Hurt’

The burning pain in Sarah Dickinson’s right breast started when she was pregnant, and doctors explained it as a side effect of her developing milk ducts. But an ultrasound after she gave birth showed something more serious.

This article is part of Health’s series, Misdiagnosed, featuring stories from real women who have had their medical symptoms dismissed or wrongly diagnosed.

Sarah Dickinson was just two weeks pregnant when she started to develop a burning feeling that affected her entire right breast. At first, she assumed it was a weird symptom of pregnancy, but the pain persisted.

It was on and off, mainly in the evenings, Dickinson, 37, tells Health. It would take my breath awaythe intensity of the burning sensation would just knock the wind out of me. The first-time mom found that applying heat to her breast helped, and she chalked up her symptoms as just hormonal.

But the burning sensation continued. Dickinson brought it up when she went to her ob-gyns officeand she went often. Because she was 35 at the time, hers was considered a “high risk” pregnancy, and that meant having doctor appointments every month. I saw four different providers and told each one about the burning, she says. Every time, they did a manual breast exam, and then concluded that the burning sensation was the result of her milk ducts coming in to prepare for breastfeeding.
