Memories Are Important After Cancer
Prestons incredible life is important to remember after her passing, and thats something that others impacted by cancer may want to take note of. This is something that Doug Wendt knows too well. He lost his wife of 25 years, Alice, to ovarian cancer, and took care of her during her cancer journey.
Doug says point blank that losing his wife of over two decades was an extremely difficult point in his life, but hes learned an important lesson in the end. Even though many people may assume its expected to move on, its not always a necessary thing to do during the grieving process.
Were never gonna move on, I dont even think I want to move on, but I do want to move forward, Doug told SurvivorNet in a previous interview. Thats an important distinction and I encourage anybody who goes through this journey as a caregiver and then has to face loss, to think very carefully about how to move forward.
Advances In Treatment: Whats New
For women with early-stage breast cancer, an encouraging new study found that the new drug, Verzenio, a CDK4/CDK6 inhibitor, helps slow down cancer in women with HR+, HER2- metastatic breast cancer and helps prevent a recurrence.
Dr. Elizabeth Comen explains how CDK4/CDK6 inhibitors help fight metastatic breast cancer
This is an important study because it showed that women with early breast cancer who are at significantly high risk for metastasis had a benefit, meaning improvement in invasive disease-free survival, says Dr. Elizabeth Comen, a medical oncologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. We are always looking for ways to improve outcomes for early-stage breast cancer patients and it means that we may be adding Verzenio to our arsenal.

Find Your Support System
“There is a saying, ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’ but I believe it also takes a village of support professionals to guide someone through a treatment journey who has been diagnosed with breast cancer,” says Licensed Mental Health Counselor Maureen Lewis-Huebel. “It can be very overwhelming when the oncologist shares the diagnosis and the patient may go through some stages of grief and loss like when someone dies.
One thing I would encourage a patient who has just been diagnosed is to ask their oncologist for a referral to a social worker to connect with resources for oncology patients including support groups for breast cancer patients it can be helpful to talk with people who are going through the same thing you are.”

How Did David Bowie Die
When musical and cinematic legend David Bowie died of liver cancer in 2016, after a nearly two-year fight, it was a shock to all but those closest to him, the Independent reported. Bowies producer, Tony Visconti, told the Independent that he knew for a year the cancer was incurable, but still kept it a secret, instead folding his diagnosis and impending death into his last album, Blackstar.
Alcohol Exercise And Weight
In addition, women can take positive steps such as reducing alcohol intake, engaging in regular exercise, and shedding excess pounds that have been found to measurably reduce their risk of developing breast cancer.
Dr. Elizabeth Comen explains the link between alcohol and breast cancer risk.
A study reported by the National Cancer Institute concluded that women who drank more than 45 grams of alcohol per day had one and a half times more risk of developing breast cancer than non-drinkers.
Every drink you take increases that risk, according to Dr. Elizabeth Comen, a breast oncologist at Sloan-Kettering Memorial Cancer Center in New York. Her advice: If you arent a drinker, dont start. If you are, try to drink less. And if youre binge-drinking stop.

A Mastectomy Isn’t The Only Option
“The most important thing is taking care of the cancer,” says Dr. Adam Kolker, a New York City plastic surgeon, associate clinical professor of surgery at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and a member of the Dubin Breast Center team.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e
However, once the cancer has been removed, there are often more reconstructive options than patients realize. “There are certain times when people get a diagnosis that says they are a potential candidate for treatment in a variety of ways,” says Dr. Kolker. “Some people may be candidates for breast conservation therapy, some may be candidates for mastectomy.”
Opt For The Day Shift Whenever Possible
While we can’t always choose the hours we work, Dr. Coke mentions that night shift work may put you at an increased risk for a breast cancer diagnosis. In fact, research published in the May 2012 issue of Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that women in the Danish military who worked the night shift were as much as 40 percent more likely to develop breast cancer than those who didn’t burn the midnight oil.

What Does Her2 Positive Mean
HER2 is a growth-promoting protein on the outside of all breast cells. Breast cancer cells with higher than normal levels of HER2 are called HER2-positive. These cancers tend to grow and spread faster than other breast cancers, but are much more likely to respond to treatment with drugs that target the HER2 protein.
Get Your Gut In Order
Leaky gut syndrome, while often brushed off by doctors, is real and may contribute to your risk of chronic disease, including many forms of cancer, according to Kazer. “Toxic waste that should never leave the digestive tract can get into the bloodstream, causing inflammation and cause unpredictable cellular responses,” she says.

Tips On Staying Safe While Getting A Mammogram
- Try to book appointments early in the morning when people are working to avoid crowds
- Wear a mask and gloves
- Wash hands once entering and leaving the hospital carry hand sanitizer
- Remain six feet distance from other patients
- Ask hospital staff how often they are sanitizing equipment and keeping the facility safe
Centers offering screening mammography should continue to be vigilant to reduce risk of COVID-19 spread, both for the best interests of our patients as well as our hospital health care workers, Dr. Lehman says.
At Mass General, we are continuing to practice best methods for social distancing, plastic shields, face masks, regular cleaning of equipment and rooms, frequent hand sanitization, reduced contacts between patients and staff, and restricted use of waiting rooms as we welcome our patients back for their health care needs, says Dr. Lehman.

Exercise Reduces Risk Supports Treatment
Its probably no surprise that regular exercise now defined as can reduce your risk of breast cancer by 12 percent. But exercise is also beneficial for those undergoing treatment. While it may seem counter-intuitive to exercise during chemotherapy or radiation treatment, physical activity no matter how hard it seems at the time does help alleviate side-effects.
Try To Maintain Your Activity Level Upon Diagnosis
Dr. Fremonta Meyer, a clinical psychiatrist from the Dana-Farber Department of Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care, says that exercise can help fight the memory-depleting effects of chemotherapy. “Regular exercise is helpful for alleviating chemo brain symptoms,” she explains. “Chemo brain” is a term used to describe foggy thinking and memory problems that can occur after cancer treatment.

Its Not Uncommon For Someone With Breast Cancer To Keep Their Diagnosis Private Cancer Experts Say
A popular Breast Cancer Awareness Month meme.
Breast cancer is the most common diagnosed cancer for women in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.
Until the 1970s, it was uncommon for women to share the diagnosis. First Lady Betty Ford helped to change the trend in 1974, sharing her diagnosis and even allowing the press to photograph her in the hospital, Cancer Today Magazine reported.
Dr. Jesse Fann, of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, told a publication of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in 2016 that its not uncommon for people to ask that their diagnosis be kept private.
Some say that they dont want others to pity them, or dont want others to treat them differently,’ she said. Some just dont know how to bring up the topic. Some dont want to sound like they are whining and complaining all the time.
People in positions of power often may want to keep their diagnosis to themselves, clinical psychologist Michelle Davey told the Financial Review, because they dont want it to tarnish their professional image.
High-achieving people are concerned about keeping their professional appearance, she told the outlet. If theyve worked hard to have a reputation for being dedicated at work, they dont want to let that perception slide.
