Charity Navigator: 4 Charities Making an Impact in the ...

With so many options available, it can be challenging to determine which charities are going to make best use of your dollars.

In addition to making sure the organizations vision and mission are in line with your charitable goals, its crucial to make sure you know where your money is going and what percentage actually is used on program expenses.

Most reputable charities post relevant financial information on their websites. This includes annual reports and links to their Form 990, a document that provides the public with financial information about a nonprofit organization.

U.S. tax-exempt nonprofits are required to provide copies of the three most recently filed annual information returns and the organizations application for tax exemption.

Additionally, the IRS keeps a searchable list of organizations eligible to receive tax-deductible charitable contributions, with links to Form 990 returns.

Several online tools are available to make the task of evaluating multiple charities easier.

Charity Navigator is one of the most well-known charity evaluators and measures a charitys financial health and accountability and transparency. Its ratings show givers how efficiently it believes a charity will use their support, and how well it has sustained its programs and services over time.

Best Charities For Cancer

What makes them the best charities for cancer? A lot of our determinations are based on AIP rating. More specifically, we give recognition to Charities that 1) raise a lot of money relative to the cost of fundraising activities 2) spend a great percentage of their raised funds on the cause and 3) have small reserves such that their charity could not operate long without continued donation. These are the primary rating criteria for AIP, and they all make obvious sense, except for possibly the last one. If you think about it though, why would a charity have large reserves? Shouldn’t that money already have gone to the cause? That is why it is good for a charity to have relatively low reserves.

Our Vote For Best Cancer Charity

Our vote goes to CRI as the best cancer charity. The children are always a great cause, and breast cancer is very prominent and needs help too, but the CRI is going directly after the heart of the beast. They are looking to ultimately cure cancer in all of its forms, which of course would eliminate the need for any cancer supporting charities, as well as helps everyone, man, woman, or child, that has cancer.
