Livestrong At The Ymca: Free Physical Training For Cancer Survivors

Breast Cancer Walk Graphics Printable Digital Collage Sheet

You may know about Livestrong due to its association with Lance Armstrong, one of the worlds most famous cancer survivors. Although the controversy surrounding Armstrongs use of performance-enhancing substances forced him to step down from the organizations board in 2012, he still helped build something that provides valuable services to many.

One way they do so is through the Livestrong at the YMCA program. As the organization surveyed and spoke with numerous cancer survivors, it became clear that rebuilding strength and returning to physical activity is one of the most challenging experiences many face after surviving cancer.

Livestrong at the YMCA strives to address this by connecting cancer survivors with personal trainers. They develop exercise programs designed for the specific needs of a given survivor. Cancer survivors can work with their trainers for 12 weeks for either no cost or a discounted rate. This training can quite literally help survivors get back on their feet after one of lifes most draining experiences.

Research indicates the program is also yielding measurable benefits for cancer survivors. For example, through surveys, those involved in the program have learned that participants end up less likely to experience fatigue and other lingering symptoms that often strike those recovering from cancer.

Programs And Resources To Help With Cancer

The major costs of a cancer diagnosis and treatment are for things like time in the hospital, clinic visits, medicines, tests, surgeries and procedures, home health services, and services of doctors and other professionals. Insurance, managed care, or public health care programs pay most of these costs if you are covered by such a plan.

If you dont have health insurance coverage, see our information on what kind of insurance or help you may be able to get. Health insurance is key if you or your child need cancer treatment. But there are also many indirect costs or other expenses when you or your child has cancer, along with their usual bills. These costs can be for things you still might be able to get help with from other sources.

For hands-on help, theres no substitute for a social worker or navigator who works with your community and knows it well. They can suggest resources to help with healthcare, transportation, lodging, food and other needs. Find one through your cancer doctor or nurse.

Cancer costs can increase for many reasons such as:

    • If cancer treatment is extended or changed
    • If complications develop
    • If the cancer comes back

Cancer treatment also can cause family members to lose time at work and, in some cases, all or part of their salary .

Most families find it hard to turn to others or to public agencies and outside groups for financial help. The extra expenses of cancer may be the first time a family has had problems with money.

    Imerman Angels: Free One

Its important that cancer patients receive support from loved ones and doctors. However, while these people may be able to offer sympathy, they might not be able to offer true empathy. This is simply because if theyve never had cancer they cant genuinely know what a cancer patient is going through.

Thats what makes the service Imerman Angels provides so valuable. Imerman Angels provides cancer patients with free one-on-one support from someone who has already been in their position. This gives them a chance to discuss their feelings with someone who can actually understand what theyre going through. Like reading terminal cancer blogs or reading cancer books, discussing ones feelings with the right person can be very helpful for a cancer patient.

Its also worth noting that the support Imerman Angels provides doesnt necessarily end once a patient beats cancer. They may also continue to take advantage of this free service as a cancer survivor.

Imerman Angels offers this free service to people of any age and gender. They carefully work to match cancer patients and survivors with the ideal individual for their personal needs and circumstances.

Going through this journey has been difficult. There are so many ups and downs but receiving that gorgeous gift today was such a wonderful up!! I will be happily using all the treats you’ve sent and think of Twisted Pink and UBCF with gratitude each day.

    Patrice

For a variety of reasons, I have struggled for the last several days, but the Box of Hope inspired me to get up, get showered and get ‘ready’ to face my day. The thought of trying out some ‘new to me’ cosmetic lines was so fantastically fun! And the socks! LOVE. THEM. I have been living with MBC for 3 years. My side effects and treatment strategy are keeping me stable for the time. Still, some days are harder than others emotionally and the box was just what I needed to remind myself I can keep going.
