Background: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosis in women. During the past 30 years, mortality of breast cancer in Chinese women showing a gradual upward trend, it has become the crucial death reasons of female.
Methods: In 2014, there were 234 population-based cancer registries submitting their data of 2011 to the National Central Cancer Registry of China and 177 cancer registries data were selected after quality evaluation. The selected cancer registries were classified as urban areas and rural areas, in each level. The crude incidence and mortality rates of female breast cancer were calculated by age-groups. Age-standardized rates were described by China and World standard population. And the national population data of China was used to combine with the cancer registries data to estimate the female breast cancer burden in 2011 in China.
Breast cancer is still a major health burden for Chinese women especially in urban areas. Prevention strategies such as weight control, high-quality screening, diagnosis and treatment may help control the disease.

What Can Policymakers And Health
We need to continue to push for screening and focus our efforts on populations that are behind when it comes to mammography utilization. We know that it is not, in general, all Black populations, but certain subsets . Black populations in urban centers or rural areas may have lower mammography utilization. We also need to look at groups of Black patients from certain immigrant groups, who, maybe due to acculturation issues, may be less likely to engage with the health-care system. Unless we tease out the diversity within a black population, it is going to be difficult to bridge the gaps in screening.
Another thing we need to do is advocate to increase coverage of screening by insurance companies. The Affordable Care Act did have some provisions to encourage insurers to provide coverage for screenings. However, there are still patients who have exorbitant costs. For our program, if patients dont have any insurance, we can get them coverage from the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.
Additionally, patients who have insurance may still have excessive copays because screening services are not 100% covered. This makes things such as Medicaid expansion helpful. All insurance companies need to know that screening is a necessity. It should be covered, and there should be pathway available to make it affordable.

Focusing On Men With Breast Cancer
Fewer than 1% of breast cancers diagnosed each year occur in men, noted Alexandra Zimmer, M.D., of the Womens Malignancies Branch in NCIs Center for Cancer Research, who was not involved in the study.
So far, we have been mostly lumping men with breast cancer and women with breast cancer in clinical trials and evaluations, Dr. Zimmer said.
As a result, the treatment of male breast cancer has largely been based on studies involving women with the disease, she continued.
The results of this retrospective study suggest that men with breast cancer deserve dedicated studies that will help us to better understand the biology of the disease in males, Dr. Zimmer said.

Sometimes its useful to have an estimate of the number of people expected to die from breast cancer in a year. This number helps show the burden of breast cancer in a group of people.
Numbers, however, can be hard to compare to each other. To compare mortality in different populations, we need to look at mortality rates rather than the number of breast cancer deaths.

Study Design And Sample
In this hospital-based, case-control study, we recruited 136 women 30 years old and newly diagnosed with histologically confirmed BC at Imam Hossain and Shohada hospitals, Tehran between September 2015 and February 2016. The control group consisted of 272 women of similar age who were admitted to the same hospital for a broad spectrum of non-neoplastic diseases unrelated to smoking, alcohol consumption, and long-term diet modification. Conditions among controls included traumas and orthopedic disorders, disk disorders, acute surgical conditions, eye, nose, ear, or skin disorders. Less than 8% of subjects approached for the interview refused to participate. Seven participants were excluded from the final analysis because their reported energy intakes were outside the ±3 standard deviation of the mean energy intakes of the population . Finally, 134 cases and 267 controls remained in the final analysis.
All participants signed the informed consent, and all procedures were according to the Helsinki Declarations ethical standards. The ethics research committee approved the studys protocol of the Student Research Committee, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran.
What Is The Chance I Could Die In The Next 5 Years
The average 5-year survival rate for all people with breast cancer is 89%. The 10-year rate is 83%, and the 15-year rate is 78%. If the cancer is located only in the breast , the 5-year survival rate is 99%. More than 70% of breast cancers are diagnosed at an Early Stage.
All survival statistics are primarily based on the stage of breast cancer when diagnosed. Some of the other important factors are also listed below that affect survival.
Stage 0 breast cancer can be also described as a pre-cancer. If you have DCIS you can be quite confident you will do well. DCIS does not spread to other organs. What can be concerning is when an invasive cancer grows back in the area of a prior lumpectomy for DCIS. This type of local recurrence does carry a risk to your life. Luckily, this does not happen frequently. Also, be aware that those who have had DCIS in the past are at a higher risk for developing an entirely new, invasive breast cancer. Stage I invasive breast cancer has an excellent survival rate. The chance of dying of Stage I breast cancer within five years of diagnosis is 1 to 5% if you pursue recommended treatments.
Stage II breast cancer is also considered an early stage of breast cancer. There is a slightly increased risk to your life versus a Stage I breast cancer. Altogether, the risk of Stage II breast cancer threatening your life in the next 5 years is about 15%.

No two patients are entirely alike, and treatment and responses to treatment can vary greatly.

Where Do These Numbers Come From
The American Cancer Society relies on information from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, maintained by the National Cancer Institute , to provide survival statistics for different types of cancer.
The SEER database tracks 5-year relative survival rates for breast cancer in the United States, based on how far the cancer has spread. The SEER database, however, does not group cancers by AJCC TNM stages . Instead, it groups cancers into localized, regional, and distant stages:
- Localized: There is no sign that the cancer has spread outside of the breast.
- Regional: The cancer has spread outside the breast to nearby structures or lymph nodes.
- Distant: The cancer has spread to distant parts of the body such as the lungs, liver or bones.

Us Breast Cancer Death Rate Drops 43% In Three Decades But Racial Disparities Remain American Cancer Society Report Finds
The breast cancer death rate in the United States has dropped significantly, but Black women continue to be more likely to die from the disease despite having a lower incidence of it, according to a new American Cancer Society report.
The study published this week in the CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians finds that in total, the death rate dropped by 43% within three decades, from 1989 to 2020, translating to 460,000 fewer breast cancer deaths during that time.
When the data were analyzed by race, Black women had a lower incidence rate of breast cancer versus White women, but the death rate was 40% higher in Black women overall.
Death rates are declining in Black women, just like they are in almost every other group, but were still seeing the same gap, said Rebecca Siegel, senior scientific director of surveillance research at the American Cancer Society and senior author of the report.
The evidence is consistent that Black women receive short shrift in the health care system at every point of the breast cancer care continuum, from lower-quality mammography to delays between the time of diagnosis and the beginning of treatment to poor quality treatment when they are diagnosed, Siegel said. The take-home message is that we really need to take a hard look at how were treating Black women differently.

How Common Is Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, except for skin cancers. It is about 30% of all new female cancers each year.
The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2022 are:
- About 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.
- About 51,400 new cases of ductal carcinoma in situ will be diagnosed.
- About 43,250 women will die from breast cancer.
Breast cancer mainly occurs in middle-aged and older women. The median age at the time of breast cancer diagnosis is 62. This means half of the women who developed breast cancer are 62 years of age or younger when they are diagnosed. A very small number of women diagnosed with breast cancer are younger than 45.
Breast Cancer Incidence Rates Over Time
In the 1980s and 1990s, the rate of breast cancer incidence rose, largely due to increased breast cancer screening with mammography .
The rate of breast cancer incidence declined in the early 2000s . This decline appears to be related to the drop in menopausal hormone therapy use after it was shown to increase the risk of breast cancer .
Mammography screening rates also fell somewhat in the early 2000s. However, studies show the decline in the rate of breast cancer incidence during this time was not likely due to the decline in screening rates .
Since about 2005, the overall breast cancer incidence rate has increased slightly . This may be due, in part, to an increase in body weight and a decline in the number of births among women in the U.S. over time .
Trends in incidence rates of breast cancer may be different among some groups of women.
