Breast Cancer Doubling Time
An important way to think about how fast a breast cancer grows is by looking at what’s called the volume doubling time. Growth rate is a part of tumor doubling time, which is exactly what it sounds like. It is the amount of time it takes for a tumor to double in size.
It would be unethical to leave a cancer untreated to see how rapidly it will grow, so researchers estimate the doubling time. However, when looking at these models, it becomes clear that doubling time estimates vary from study to study.
A 2018 study estimated doubling time by looking at serial ultrasounds in 265 people with invasive breast cancer to see if there were differences among breast cancer subtypes. These images were taken between diagnosis and surgery. The results suggest that growth varied significantly based on the breast cancer subtype and the role of estrogen receptors in those subtypes.
During an average interval of 57 days, 36% of tumors did not change in size, while 64% grew. Of those tumors that increased in size, the average gain in volume was 34.5%. Tumors that were triple negative had greater increases in volume and shorter doubling times than those that were estrogen receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors.
A similar 2016 study looked at growth in 323 people, based on ultrasound images taken between diagnosis and surgery over a 31 day period, On average, the tumors grew from 1.47 centimeters to 1.56 cm in diameter. The daily growth rate based on type was:

What causes breast cancer?
Breast cancer is often caused due to environmental and genetic factors. Exposure to radiation through occupational means, hormone replacement therapy limited, abnormal menstrual history, reduced lactation, etc are some environmental factors. When it comes to genes playing a role, there is a particular gene around breast cancer that can be hereditary BRCA1 genes. There is a 70% chance of contracting breast cancer if a person develops this mutation, almost 5% to 10% of breast cancer cases are hereditary.

A Study of Familial Breast Cancer in BRCA Mutation-Negative Families: Women with a strong family history of breast cancer, but no BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation, are two to four times more likely to develop breast cancer than women without a family history. Despite this elevated risk, no clinical guidelines have been developed for the care of these women. This study evaluates factors which may influence their risk.

Factors Associated With More Rapid Spread
Some types of breast cancer, as well as their subtypes, are more likely to spread than other types. For example, ductal carcinoma is more likely to spread than lobular carcinoma, among tumors that are the same size and stage.
Many breast cancers do not spread to lymph nodes until the tumor is at least 2 cm to 3 cm in diameter. Some types may spread very early, even when a tumor is less than 1 cm in size.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2021
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in American women after skin cancers. In fact, a woman in the U.S. has a 12% risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Furthermore, there is a 1-in-38 chance that one will die from breast cancer. Thus, raising awareness is incredibly important. Regular screenings help in the detection of precancerous and cancerous breast tissue that may be present in otherwise healthy individuals. With proper diagnoses and treatment in the initial stages, breast cancer can be one of the most treatable forms of cancer.

What Is My Risk For Breast Cancer
Being a woman is the main risk factor for breast cancer, as the disease is most commonly found in women in ages 55 and older. Multiple uncontrollable factors such as race and ethnicity, personal/family history, breast density and menstrual period history increase the risk of breast cancer occurrence. In addition, having changes in certain breast cancer genes increases the risk of developing breast cancer.
Another category is the lifestyle-related risk factors, such as the use of birth control pills, hormone therapy after menopause, childbirth, alcohol consumption, extra weight and sedentariness.
It is important to keep in mind that having one or several risk factors does not mean a woman will develop breast cancer. Although is it important to be familiar with all of the risk factors and especially for those that can be controlled by lifestyle to lower the risk of breast cancer. Physical activity of at least 150 minutes at moderate intensity or 75 minutes at vigorous intensity activity is recommended. Further, the ACS advises that women have no more than one alcoholic drink per day to reduce breast cancer risk. Regular breast cancer screening is also recommended by ACS for all women above the age of 40.

Ductal carcinoma: It is the most common type of breast cancer and begins in the lining of the milk ducts . Ductal carcinoma may be either ductal carcinoma in situ or invasive ductal carcinoma .
Lobular carcinoma: This cancer begins in the lobules of the breast and may be either lobular carcinoma in situ or invasive lobular carcinoma . LCIS rarely becomes invasive, but having it in one breast increases the risk of developing invasive cancer in either breast.
Inflammatory breast cancer: A type of breast cancer in which the breast looks red and swollen and feel warm. The redness and warmth occur because the cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin.
Triple-negative breast cancer: This describes breast cancer cells that do not have estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors or large numbers of HER2/neu protein. It is also called ER-negative PR-negative HER2/neu-negative breast cancer.
Recurrent breast cancer: Breast cancer can recur when treatment doesnt fully remove or destroy all the cancer cells.

About Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes place every October. The aim of the BCAM is to shine a light on the devastating impact breast cancer has on thousands of Australians each day.
Over 20,000 Australians will be diagnosed with the disease this year alone.
That equates to 55 Australians every day.
And over 3000 Australians will lose their lives to breast cancer this year. Thats someones mother, sister, friend or family member whose life has been tragically cut short because of the disease.
Although the five-year survival rate has increased from 76% to 91% since 1994 thanks to research, there is still progress to be made to stop deaths from breast cancer. By targeting the remaining 9% who dont live past this survival rate, NBCFs goal is to reach Zero Deaths from breast cancer by 2030.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day
On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, The Peter Gilgan Centre for Women’s Cancers in partnership with The Canadian Cancer Society and with generous support from The Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons delivered this free three-hour event for women considering breast reconstruction.
BRA Day is intended to EDUCATE women on their breast reconstruction options, provide an opportunity to see possible outcomes of breast reconstruction surgery, EMPOWER women to make the choice that’s right for them and CONNECT women with others who have been through it.
The virtual event is open to women and men across the country and will include presentations from leading Canadian breast reconstruction experts, stories from patients sharing their breast reconstruction journey, educational breakout rooms, resources and a virtual Show and Tell Lounge for women only, offering a unique opportunity to see real results of breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction is covered by most health insurance plans in Canada.
Breast reconstruction is recognized by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan as an important part of breast cancer treatment. As such, OHIP covers all aspects of breast reconstruction including the costs of surgery, breast implants, hospital stay , nipple areolar reconstruction and most balancing surgeries on the opposite breast if required.
