How To Protect Yourself Against Scam Pacs

Breast Cancer Initiative

Some telemarketers who claim to be raising money for causes like homeless veterans and cancer victims work for political action committees , not charities, and keep much of the money they raise. Some tips for consumers:

⢠Listen carefully for the name of the organization. Legitimate charities can be checked on websites such as www.guidestar.org.⢠Ask if the donation is tax-deductible. Gifts to actual charities are donations to PACs, which sometimes sound like charities, are not.⢠Never disclose personal information.⢠Or follow the simplest rule: âNever give to anyone over the phone,â said Margot Saunders, senior counsel for the National Consumer Law Center.

Joseph Tanfani

If the potential donors suspected they had given to the group before, the callers were instructed to say: âI have no way of knowing because we feel that donations are given from the heart, not the hand, so we keep all donation records confidential,â according to the FAQ.

The PAC, organized by Zachary Bass, spent 90% of its take on fundraising, campaign filings show. It spent $103,700 on behalf of House candidates â about 3% of the total, and it has contributed nothing directly to veterans groups.

Bass, who set up several other super PACs, declined to comment.

Across the industry, calls are computer-generated before being routed to telemarketers, something Politicause and TPFE employees said allowed their firms to maximize the number of calls â and to pester people repeatedly.

The call was claiming to raise funds to support legislation and legislators to “help support” those with various types of cancer. When looking up their name on Federal Campaign sights I could not find them. If, I don’t know who they support I do not donate. When asking for that information, they hung up. Last week’s “group” was raising funds for “disabled veterans” and all their Federal donations went to one D candidate in Florida.

This company is sending mailings to my mother stating she agreed to a $35.00 donation – my mother is recently deceased. I have been trying to contact this company to remove her information from their mailing list to no avail – which led to my searching the legitimacy of this company.

They asked me to donate and immediately asked for my credit card number. Huge red flag! I told them they could send me an envelope and asked for a $50, then $35, and finally a $15 amount. So upon receipt, I could look them up. And I found this. They called from 334-649-7162. I blocked them and will continue to block them.

In Las Vegas Faux Cancer Charity Still Solicits And Still Spends $0 On Mission

Wake Up Call from MA Breast Cancer Coalition

The cold caller on the phone at the New To Las Vegas world headquarters said she was Diane Samson soliciting a gift for Breast Cancer Relief Committee PAC. I asked if her cause had complied with a new Nevada law requiring pre-registration for many fundraisers.

Yes, Diane said.

That wouldnt be her only false statement.

I asked where the organization was based. Windermere, Fla., she replied. The problem with Dianes response is that on its website, American Coalition for Crisis Relief PAC, which is the parent of child Breast Cancer Relief Committee PAC and incorporates its financials, lists its address in Dallas, Tex. And for what its worth, my caller ID listed a number around Tucson, Ariz.

DianeIm using quotes around her name because she isnt a real person but a computer-generated voice controlled by a human using soundboard technologygave me an 800 number that she said I could call to get more information. I wrote it down and called. The number turned out to be that of an unrelated business.

Still, I already knew a lotlike the fact that American Coalition completely stiffed its donors on its stated mission of supporting political candidates for a sympathetic cause. Thats what a PAC, which stands for political action committee, is supposed to do. I call these kinds of PACs faux charities, although some watchdogs use stronger language.

Government Says Four Cancer Charities Are Shams

FTC and 50 state regulators say charities committed nationwide fraud

In a rare joint action with attorneys general for each of the 50 states, the Federal Trade Commission says four cancer charities run by extended members of the same family conned donors out of $187 million from 2008 through 2012 and spent almost nothing to help actual cancer patients.

How Scam Pacs Fall Through The Cracks Of Us Regulators

Reach To Recovery – Peer Support for People Facing Breast Cancer

Regulators responsible for protecting U.S. consumers from potentially unscrupulous fundraisers face a bedeviling new challenge: the âscam PAC.â

Thatâs what critics call political action committees that gobble up most of the money they raise rather than using it for the charitable or other causes they profess to support.

âScam PACsâ tend to slip through gaps among agencies that govern elections, charities and telemarketing, regulators say, leaving consumers exposed to misleading or fraudulent pitches.

The Federal Trade Commission, which is responsible for policing telemarketing, generally has no jurisdiction over political fundraising, said Lois Greisman, an associate director in charge of the agencyâs marketing practices division. The Do Not Call law, the FTCâs major weapon in policing telemarketing, does not apply to political calls, which have protections under the U.S. Constitution.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser By Nonprofit Political Organization Has Significant Links To Fake Pac Networks

As Americans commemorate another Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, many groups and advocates are seeking for ways to help. However, there is one organisation that donations should avoid: the American Breast Cancer Coalition.

Although it looks to be a charitable organisation, the ABCC is essentially a political organizationand rather than addressing breast cancer, the ABCC appears to be a ploy to extract millions of dollars in donations.

In recent robocalls, a feminine voice claims the goal of the groups fundraising is to support legislators who will fight for the fast track approval of life-saving breast cancer health bills and breast cancer treatment drugs to the FDA.

But financial records on file with the Internal Revenue Service tell a different story, reviewed in a joint investigation between The Daily Beast and OpenSecrets, revealing payments to firms with ties to a multimillion-dollar scam PAC network. In May 2019, Bill Davis created the nonprofit, and the group quickly started raising money.

Whats more, its not alone.

In the space of two years, ABCC has brought in nearly $3.57 million, according to IRS filings. But the nonprofit has so far paid nearly every dollar it has raised to fundraising companies. Some of those companies even have ties to a telemarketing kingpin who was fined $56 million last year for bilking donors out of tens of millions of dollars in fake charity contributions.

This Breast Cancer Charity Is The Big New Scam In Politics

A political group posing as a charity spends nearly all of its money on fundraising. Thats not new. What is new is that its not even registered with the FECand its legal.

Illustration by Elizabeth Brockway/The Daily Beast

This October, as Americans mark another Breast Cancer Awareness month, many organizations and advocates are looking for ways to support the cause. But theres one group donors may want to avoid: The American Breast Cancer Coalition.

Although it sounds like a noble charity, the ABCC is actually a political groupand rather than trying to actually address breast cancer, the ABCC appears to be a scheme to extract millions of dollars in donations, mostly from small contributors.

Lloyd Mayer, a nonprofit law expert at the University of Notre Dame Law School, explained why the change poses a new hurdle.
