Annual Avon Walk For Breast Cancer Houston Raises More Than $2 Million

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

HOUSTON The 12th annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer season raised more than $2 million to accelerate breast cancer research improve access to screening, diagnosis and treatment and educate people about breast cancer. The Rose was one of 10 local organizations recognized as benefitting from the fundraising efforts of walkers completing more than 39 miles.

Now in its seventh year, the Avon Walk Houston the first of eight 2014 Avon walks across the country attracted more than 1,000 participants from 26 states and Washington, D.C., including 126 breast cancer survivors, who walked to raise lifesaving funds for breast cancer.

During the Closing Ceremony at Stude Park, 34 year-old Dana Clark, a breast cancer survivor and second time Avon Walker, emotionally shared her journey of survival with fellow Walkers, volunteers, family and friends and described what motivated her to walk: When I found my first lump, I was in denial that it was anything serious, let alone cancer, said Clark. I went to the doctor to undergo testing and was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. I was only 32 years old and knew that not only was I was going to fight for my life, but that I would help other people live through this awful disease. Last year, I saw the power of the Avon Walk first-hand. Thats why I walked in my second Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this weekend, and raised enough money to help a ton of people who desperately need it.

Welcome to our Team Page. We’ve formed a team because this cause is important to us. We want to help. And walking and raising money in our local American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event is the best way we can do that. We all have different reasons for participating but we share a determination to help save lives from breast cancer.

There are so many ways that the money our team raises helps. Its helping fund innovative research. It’s providing free information for people dealing with the disease. Its providing rides to treatment and places to stay for people who have to seek treatment far from home. In short, our money is helping save lives. Consider donating to our team and helping advance the cause.

How We Support the American Cancer Society

Of course we walk in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event. And we solicit donations from family, friends, and other supporters. But we also schedule fundraisers in lead-up to the big event. Bake-sales, car washes, and countless other types of events. And we promote those on social media, through Facebook and Twitter, by word of mouth, and through flyers at work and around the neighborhood. The success of fundraising events depends on two things – hard work and getting the word out. And we’re out to do both. Keep an eye out for our fundraising events.

Join us. Donate today. Or walk with us.

About The Avon Walk New York

Avon 39 Walk To End Breast Cancer

The Avon Walk New York began early Saturday morning at South Street Seaport. Participants traveled up the West Side Pedestrian Path and Riverside Drive as far as Fort Tryon, then headed back downtown along Central Park West, and across the Upper East Side to their campsite for the night, the “Wellness Village” on Randall’s Island. Walkers had a choice of walking a half marathon or full marathon route on their first day. At the Village, participants celebrated their first day’s journey with yoga, massage and entertainment. The Village also provided the essentials to keep participants comfortable, including sleeping tents, hot showers, prepared hot meals and comprehensive medical services.

Throughout the weekend, a dedicated all-volunteer crew cared for the walkers, ensuring their safety and supporting their needs. In addition, friends and family came out to visit their loved ones and show support along the route and at the Wellness Village.

Today, Sunday, all walkers completed the final half marathon , leaving Randall’s Island to walk back down the East side and swinging through Brooklyn Heights before their triumphant march across the Brooklyn Bridge and back to the Seaport for the closing ceremony celebration attended by hundreds of family and supporters.

They’re Expensive And It’s Not Clear They Really Help Women

Every spring, major breast cancer charities like Susan G. Komen and the Avon Foundation encourage people to raise money by walking. Each year, multiple organizations put on hundreds of walks, raising tens of millions of dollars. Since the 1980s, theyve argued that these efforts are key to ending a devastating disease. About their three-day event, Komen proclaims: This isnt just a walk. Its the journey to the end of breast cancer.

As executive director of the national Breast Cancer Action organization, Ive seen these walks become larger, shinier and more closely tied to their corporate sponsors. That bloat is bad for supporters and those with cancer alike.

Heres why: The cost of putting on breast cancer walks today, especially multi-day walks, can be extravagant. And many of the best-known breast cancer charities dont report how much their walks cost or raise, so its impossible to find out how much money really goes to breast cancer programs. These figures should be easy to find, especially as some walks require people to raise thousands of dollars to participate.

Getting answers to where the money goes is critical, because we havent made nearly enough progress dealing with the diseases mortality rate. Today, 250,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. More than 40,000 women die of the disease each year, a number that has hardly declined in 25 years.

From Beauty Buys To Saving Lives

To honour Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re also launching a range of fundraising products to raise money for our charity partners across the globe, and get more people checking their breasts and pecs.

Products include the innovative Love Avon, Cancer Care pack created with three kind to skin products especially for those going through treatment including the Caring Scalp Balm. Were also encouraging our community to show their support for the cause with our Breast Cancer Promise Pins and turn beauty must haves from every day essentials to lifesaving products with favourites like our True Colour Ultra Satin Lipstick carrying a donation this BCAM.

The money raised supports our global Breast Cancer Promise, ensuring every woman knows the signs, knows the symptoms and knows how to take action, by funding organisations across the globe.

The money you raise supports our Breast Cancer Promise, helping people check their boobs and pecs and fund critical wellbeing workshops for those undergoing treatment.

Avon 39 Walk To End Breast Cancer

AVON 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer Series Ends

Heather Harrington, ECS Corporate Services Administrative Trainer, has committed herself for the past 5 years to participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. She is also already committed to her 6th year. The Avon walk has been hosting this event for over 13 years in the Washington, DC area. Avon hosts seven of these events across the country.

Heather lost both her grandmother and mother to this terrible disease. She walks for them and what they went through, and hopes one day we can see an end to this disease. She walks for her friends, and their mothers and hopes that she doesn’t have to watch another one of them go through what her family had. Heather has raised over $20,000 over the past five years.

The event happens to take place around the anniversary of her mothers passing and she cannot think of a better way to honor her memory than by participating in this event. She’ll be just one of thousands of people who have walked up to 39.3 miles over two days to raise awareness and promote education. Heather likes to break her walk up by doing a marathon walk the first day and the rest on the 2nd day. 39.3 miles is a short distance to walk in honor of the woman who taught me how, says Harrington.
