Can You Ask Questions And Get Answers You Can Understand

Finding the right team, one that consists of professionals with whom you are comfortable, makes a big difference in how your treatment will progress. Your physicians should be knowledgeable, of course, but they should also welcome questions and be able to explain your treatment options to you in a way you can understand.

Do you understand your treatment goals and why particular treatments are recommended?

Once youve identified your team, your doctors can describe your treatment choices, the expected results, and the possible side effects you may experience.

Are Your Concerns Treated With Respect

Dont be afraid to ask questions raising your concernseven those that you may think will be viewed as trivialwith your oncology team will help you better understand your options and provide your doctors with insight into what is important to you. Today, there are many treatment options available to you. Work with your team to find the right combination for you.

Do you feel comfortable sharing with your medical team about what you have learned regarding your condition?

Do your research. Speak with support groups and breast cancer survivors. The more information you gather about your treatment options, the better decisions youll make.

How Does Breast Cancer Develop

The breast is mostly made up of fatty tissue. Within this tissue is a network of lobes, which are made up of tiny, tube-like structures called lobules that contain milk glands.

Tiny ducts connect the glands, lobules and lobes, carrying the milk from the lobes to the nipple, located in the middle of the areola .

Blood and lymph vessels run throughout the breast blood nourishes the cells, and the lymph system drains bodily waste products. The lymph vessels connect to lymph nodes, which are tiny, bean-shaped organs that normally help fight infection.

About 90 percent of all breast cancer cases start in the ducts or lobes. Almost 75 percent of all breast cancers begin in the cells lining the milk ducts and are called ductal carcinomas.

Cancer that begins in the lobules is called lobular carcinoma. If the disease has spread outside of the duct and into the surrounding tissue, it is called invasive or infiltrating ductal carcinoma. If the disease has spread outside of the lobule, it is called invasive or infiltrating lobular carcinoma. Disease that has not spread is called in situ, meaning in place.

This December,Forbes magazine recognized 27 breast oncologists across the country as exemplary physicians in the field of oncology. Individuals on the list serve in the top spots of their respective hospitals, contribute a wealth of clinical research to advance the practice, and serve on community boards and national organizations.

The Forbes list was generated in partnership with Grand Rounds, whose mission is to connect patients with the highest quality care available to them. Other Types Of Breast Cancer

Other, less common cancers of the breast include medullary, mucinous, tubular, metaplastic and papillary breast cancer.

Inflammatory breast cancer is a faster-growing type of cancer that accounts for about one to five percent of all breast cancers. It may be misdiagnosed as a breast infection because there is often swelling of the breast and redness of the breast skin.

Paget disease is a type of in situ cancer that can begin in the ducts of the nipple. The skin often appears scaly and may be itchy.

Top Breast Cancer Oncologists Picked By Big Data

What’s below is the result of a challenge: can a company that helps patients find the right doctor identify the best physicians over all, or at least come close?

Last year, I wrote a magazine profile of a company called Grand Rounds, which aims to meticulously comb through data on physicians everything from what they prescribe to the wait times in their parking lotsto match patients with the right doctor for them. The companys founder, Owen Tripp, even used the service himself when a type of tumor was found in his ear. It’s not that there aren’t good doctors, and it’s certainly not that there aren’t enough of them, Tripp said last week at the Forbes Healthcare Summit. The problem is measurement.

There are limitations to this analysis. Grand Rounds says it misses excellent doctors who belong on it. Efforts to find outside experts who could vet Grand Rounds algorithms were unsuccessful. Like many efforts in machine learning or artificial intelligence, the results emerge from a black box thats hard for outsiders to evaluate. And Grand Rounds is a private company, with the skepticism it entails. But this list, and the other, are at the least thought-provoking. And I can confirm, based on years of reporting, that many of the physicians included are indeed the best in their fields.

Online Breast Cancer Resources

There are thousands of websites that offer information and advice. Some are reliable and concise, but others can be misleading or even dangerous.

  • Seek out reputable websites — those run by agencies of the U.S. government, such as the National Cancer Institute, or by an organization you know about, such as the American Cancer Society — that offer current and reliable information.
  • Avoid websites or chat rooms that offer “miracle cures” or try to persuade patients to try methods that sound too good to be true.
  • Be careful when giving out personal information online.

Your treatment will be less stressful and easier to manage when you have a team thatâs right for you and the support you need.
