Ways To Protect Your Eyes During Breast Cancer Treatment

Here are some tips to help you keep your eyes healthy during and after breast cancer treatment:

Breast cancer patients are encouraged to have a baseline eye exam prior to or within the first year of treatment, which should include an eye exam of the macula as well as tests for central and color vision.

Learn about side effects: Before you begin treatment, speak with your oncologist about possible side effects that could affect your eyes. It’s important to be aware of these potential problems so that you and your eye doctor can catch them early.

Protect against eye infections: Chemotherapy can impair your immune system and raise the risk of eye infection. Extra handwashing and avoiding rubbing your eyes may help you avoid eye infections.

Avoid smoking, which can increase your risk of developing dry eye syndrome and several eye diseases.

Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables and get regular exercise to help protect your vision and boost your overall health.

Diagnosing Melanoma Of The Eye

If your GP or optician suspects you have a serious problem with your eyes, they will refer you to a specialist eye doctor called an ophthalmologist for an assessment.

If they suspect you have melanoma of the eye, they’ll refer you to a specialist centre for eye cancer. There are 4 centres in the UK, located in London, Sheffield, Liverpool, and Glasgow.

It’s likely you’ll have a number of different tests at the centre, including:

  • an eye examination to look at the structures of your eyes in more detail and check for abnormalities
  • an ultrasound scan of your eye a small probe placed over your closed eye uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of the inside of your eye this allows your doctor to find out more about the position of the tumour and its size
  • a fluorescein angiogram where photographs of the suspected cancer are taken using a special camera after dye has been injected into your bloodstream to highlight the tumour

Occasionally, a thin needle may be used to remove a small sample of cells from the tumour . The genetic information in these cells is analysed to give an indication of the chances of the cancer spreading or coming back.

Cancers Of The Eyeball

DISCUSSIONBreast carcinoma is the most common cancer to affectwomen in the United States. The incidence is increasing, and one in eight women is anticipated to develop thismalignancy in her lifetime.1 The American Cancer Society estimates cancer prevalence and death based on datafrom the National Cancer Institute, Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention, and the North AmericanAssociation of Central Cancer Registries. Based on the ACSestimates, it is projected that in the United States in the year2009, there will be a total of 1,479,350 new cancers and562,340 deaths from cancer.2 Interestingly, cancer rates haveslightly decreased in men and women over recent years dueto reduction in lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers inmen and reduction in breast and colorectal cancers inwomen. It is estimated that the reduction in new cancersand cancer deaths over the past 15 years has spared approximately650,000 lives.

Squamous Cell Skin Cancer

Most squamous cell cancers are found on the skin and develop in areas that are exposed to the sun. This includes the eyelids.

Squamous cell cancers don’t often spread. If they do, it’s most often to the deeper layers of the skin. They can spread to nearby lymph nodes and other organs causing secondary cancers, but this is unusual.

Breast Cancer Can Have An Affect On The Eyes

Most people are not aware that breast cancer can cause health changes in the eyes. The most common place in the body for breast cancer to spread is to the eyes. In men, lung cancer is more likely to spread to the eyes. These tumors that develop in the eyes, in the choroid are not detected until you have a dilated eye examination, because they cause no symptoms to your vision, or no pain to your eye. The choroid is a vascular layer in the retina that supplies the eye with a large portion of blood. Once a tumor grows so big, it will eventually affect vision, but by then, it is too late in the course of the condition to have a positive outcome.

Both men and women , should obtain an eye exam if they have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The reason, is to ensure, that metastasis to the choroid has not taken place yet.

If it has, an ocular oncologist will be added to the team of professionals in treating your cancer. While undergoing treatment for breast cancer, you can experience many ocular side effects from the medications that are taken. The eye problems you may encounter are red, itchy or burning eyes, constant watering or watery eyes, pink eyes or inflammation of the white part, blurry vision, double vision, floaters or dark spots in vision, and eye pain.

A few things you can do if you are taking medication to treat breast cancer to improve your ocular symptoms are:

  • Wash your hands often.

Ophthalmic Metastasis Of Breast Cancer And Ocular Side Effects From Breast Cancer Treatment And Management: Mini Review

Ilias GeorgalasAcademic Editor: Received

Abstract

Breast cancer is one of the most common malignant diseases occurring in women, and its incidence increases over the years. It is the main site of origin in ocular metastatic disease in women, and, due to its hematogenous nature of metastatic spread, it affects mainly the uveal tissue. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the clinical manifestations of the breast cancer ocular metastatic disease, alongside the side effects of the available treatment options for the management and regression of the systematic and ophthalmic disease.

1. Introduction and Epidemiology

2. Clinical Signs and Manifestations

2.1. Symptoms and Signs of Metastatic Choroidal Disease
2.2. Symptoms and Signs of Iris Metastasis

Clinical presentation of iris metastases includes ocular pain rather than visual impairment, if associated with secondary glaucoma or iridocyclitis . The decreased visual acuity is secondary to anterior chamber seeding or to cataract formation. On slit lamp examination, they are identified as rapidly growing yellow to white solitary iris nodules with pupillary distortion, located in the iris and in some cases infiltrating the trabecular meshwork . More rarely they may be accompanied by pseudohypopyon .

2.3. Symptoms and Signs of Optic Disc Metastasis
2.4. Symptoms and Signs of Metastatic Ciliary Body Disease
2.5. Extraocular Metastasis
2.5.1. Orbital
2.5.2. Cerebral
2.6. Paraneoplastic Manifestations

3. Diagnosis

Treatments For Eye Melanoma

Eye metastasis in breast cancer: Case report and review of literature

Treatment for melanoma of the eye depends on the size and location of the tumour. Your care team will explain each treatment option in detail, including the benefits and any potential complications.

Treatment will aim to conserve the affected eye whenever possible.

The main treatments for eye melanoma are:

  • brachytherapy tiny plates lined with radioactive material called plaques are inserted near the tumour and left in place for up to a week to kill the cancerous cells
  • external radiotherapy a machine is used to carefully aim beams of radiation at the tumour to kill the cancerous cells
  • surgery to remove the tumour or part of the eye this may be possible if the tumour is small and you still have some vision in your eye
  • removal of the eye this may be necessary if the tumour is large or you’ve lost your vision the eye will eventually be replaced with an artificial eye that matches your other eye

Chemotherapy is rarely used for eye melanoma, but may be suitable for other types of eye cancer.

Pregnancy And Breastfeeding While Taking Ibrance
