Diagnosing Melanoma Of The Eye
If your GP or optician suspects you have a serious problem with your eyes, they will refer you to a specialist eye doctor called an ophthalmologist for an assessment.
If they suspect you have melanoma of the eye, they’ll refer you to a specialist centre for eye cancer. There are 4 centres in the UK, located in London, Sheffield, Liverpool, and Glasgow.
It’s likely you’ll have a number of different tests at the centre, including:

A65-year-old white woman developed painlessblurred vision in the left eye over 10 days. Shegave a history of breast carcinoma diagnosed 5 years previouslyand treated with lumpectomy and radiotherapy. Lymphnode sampling was positive, requiring the use of systemicchemotherapy and hormone therapy with anastrozole . Four years after diagnosis, lung metastaseswere discovered and treated with fulvestrant intramuscular hormone therapy.
DISCUSSIONBreast carcinoma is the most common cancer to affectwomen in the United States. The incidence is increasing,and one in eight women is anticipated to develop thismalignancy in her lifetime.1 The American Cancer Society estimates cancer prevalence and death based on datafrom the National Cancer Institute, Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention, and the North AmericanAssociation of Central Cancer Registries. Based on the ACSestimates, it is projected that in the United States in the year2009, there will be a total of 1,479,350 new cancers and562,340 deaths from cancer.2 Interestingly, cancer rates haveslightly decreased in men and women over recent years dueto reduction in lung, prostate, and colorectal cancers inmen and reduction in breast and colorectal cancers inwomen. Some cancer drugs can make your eyes more sensitive to light. Doctors call this photophobia.
Treatments that might cause photophobia include:

You may find that light hurts your eyes and is even painful.
Some people notice pain when they go from a dark to a light area. Most people are sensitive to light when they go outside during the daytime.

Can Taking Ibrance Affect My Eyes
Its possible. There were rare reports of a few eye-related side effects in Ibrances clinical studies of capsules and tablets. These side effects included:
- increased tear production
None of these were serious or caused people to stop taking the drug.
If you have side effects involving your eyes while taking Ibrance, talk with your doctor. They may want to see you to examine your eyes in person. Your doctor may also be able to recommend ways to treat the side effects. But if the eye problems are bothersome to you and dont go away, your doctor may suggest a different treatment for your cancer.
Treatments For Eye Melanoma
Treatment for melanoma of the eye depends on the size and location of the tumour. Your care team will explain each treatment option in detail, including the benefits and any potential complications.

The main treatments for eye melanoma are:
- brachytherapy tiny plates lined with radioactive material called plaques are inserted near the tumour and left in place for up to a week to kill the cancerous cells
- external radiotherapy a machine is used to carefully aim beams of radiation at the tumour to kill the cancerous cells
- surgery to remove the tumour or part of the eye this may be possible if the tumour is small and you still have some vision in your eye
- removal of the eye this may be necessary if the tumour is large or you’ve lost your vision the eye will eventually be replaced with an artificial eye that matches your other eye
Chemotherapy is rarely used for eye melanoma, but may be suitable for other types of eye cancer.

Pregnancy And Breastfeeding While Taking Ibrance
You should not take Ibrance if youre pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This medication can cause harm to a fetus.
Because of this risk, if you can become pregnant, your doctor will give you a pregnancy test before you start taking Ibrance. Youll also need to use birth control during your treatment and for at least 3 weeks after your last dose of Ibrance.
If youre sexually active with a partner who can become pregnant, you should also use birth control while taking Ibrance and for at least 3 months after stopping treatment.
Its not known if Ibrance is safe to take while breastfeeding. Studies havent looked at whether the drug passes into breast milk or what effects it may have on a breastfed child. But because of the risk of harm to a fetus, Ibrance use is not recommended while breastfeeding. You also shouldnt breastfeed for at least 3 weeks after your last dose of Ibrance.
If youre pregnant or breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant or to breastfeed, talk with your doctor before taking Ibrance.
